Scale of 1 to 10, rate Fran's first season

i think those of you who gave him an 8,9, 10 are forgetting what our record was. We still lost a ton of games. That being said, the optimism is completely back in the program. You can feel a breath of fresh air has been breathed into the program. We are on the right track and I love it. So with that I would rate the season a 6. We have a long ways to go, but I feel like we could make a significant jump next year.

I gave Fran an 8 and did not forget about our record this season. We are talking about the full picture here. The state of the program and the wheels that are turning behind the scenes. Not many coaches would have won too many more games with the talent on this year's roster.

Agree to disagree. 8 is way to high for 11-20 record. We lost some non-conf games we should have won, and there were a few B1G games we didn't show up for. We are back on the right track for sure though. I'm very excited for the future of the program.

i understand where you're coming from, but no coach would have won more games IMO, so i don't know what else you could ask for. a sucky record yes, but most rate fran high on potential, as that's really all you can go on at this point.

We aren't rating the Hawkeyes' season. We're rating the job Fran did in his first year.

Mentioning the ugly early season losses, in my mind, is the most convincing evidence of Fran's incredible first season. Look at the team he inherited and how they played early on. Cartwright wasn't a player capable of leading the conference in assists back in November. And if my jumper was falling, I am not sure Brommer and Archie could have beaten me in a game of 2 on 1 last fall. I could have gone with an 0-1 zone and they'd have struggled to score against me.

Yet there they were, playing critical roles against future first round picks in hard fought games with Michigan State and Purdue. Archie and Brommer!

I didn't expect Fran to be able to establish his style, intensity and player development until the end of year two, and even then I didn't know if Carver would be a house of fire again.

All these things have happened at the end of year 1. In my mind, Fran is a full year ahead of best case scenario. That's how you should judge his performance, not if we should have ended up with a few more wins in November and December.

two fundamental factors in sports: results and entertainment value

Results ... 6 ... better than par, but not much
Entertainment value ... 9 ... much improved

Competitiveness is something else, a subcomponent of both of the above ... you can't get either of the above without competitiveness, and that was the largest difference between this year and last

Nailed it with both of your responses. This is not a true false test, but an essay question, and cannot be answered with a mere number. It is a question that can only be answered with the gut,ie,do we feel better off this year over last and by how much? Answers: yes, and a whole bunch.
Nuff said...job well done,Fran.

Hard to go much higher than 6. Finished 10th in an 11 team conf and went 0-4 against the 8th and 9th place teams. Minny's only win in last 11 games was against Iowa. Like the energy Fran has put in program.

Fan bases are always funny. Does anyone realize the roster he was left with. One above average big ten player and one average. The rest below average. You could argue his best 2 players were newcomers

Honestly, I think it's pretty clear that his two best players were newcomers that he recruited.
