Sargent

I like Sarge a lot. Hopefully he can be our guy who can get in space next year. We’re going to need a quick back.

IKM is probably the third-best back on the roster, and finding a different position for him might not be a bad idea.

Don’t forget we have Goodson coming in next year. He is supposed to be more like Wadley. I think he redshirts, but if our RB corps don’t start to show improvement, then I think he gets to play. I think Geil might be just more of what we already have. IKM is still our fastest back, Young is our power back, and Sarge is somewhat of both. I don’t think I can put it all on the RB’s this year. Seems to me, our run game up the middle hasnt been very good all year. I put that on having average interior play. We did better running to the outside but because our backs arent all that speedy, that was average at best. The only thing our OL really exceled at was in pass blocking. If we can get some interior blocking to develop next year we can be a better run team.

Sargent was the best and should be number 1 for next season. Number 2 being up for grabs, and would not be surprised if a newcomer gets the nod.

Yeah our Oline for whatever reasons wasn't run blocking all that great and you have to factor in the situational play calling. Running the same things that are practically designed to only get 3 or 4 yards at best doesn't cut it all the dang time. If your Oline is just roadgrating like they did against Neb you can do what you want pretty much. But against stout D you have to get more creative and less predictable with your overall playcalling which in turn opens up running lanes for when you do that...

I think all 3 running backs will be serviceable. Most of the problem they had this year was patience. Young backs know what hole they are supposed to hit and if there isn’t one there, they will just plunge into where it should be. Once they get more experience, they should be able to relax and look for cutback lanes or secondary holes to open.

I think that’s why Sargent looked a bit better at the end of the year. He has more experience and was able to calm down and look for cutback lanes. Hopefully TY and IKM follow suit.

The RB’s don’t really have a certain hole they run to, they have a direction to run to and when a hole opens up, they are suppose to cut and run through that hole. Once they get to the second level, thats when they need to look for that cutback lane. This is something Wadley was excellent at wether he did his jump cut or a spin move, he was able to hit that lane and then accelerate. If we had Wadley this year, we would be undefeated.

"Everyone's got a plan until they get hit."

"They say I can't lose. I say you can't win!"

No offense to the weight room and training table or staff at IWCC, the kids at Juco do lift weights and try to eat well, but Sargent could use an off season with our strength staff and training table.

how many games was he the #1 back for?
He got serious carries against NIU, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Maryland. He was solid against Wiscy and Maryland, but after that, saw his touches drop enormously. He got a combined 18 carries between PSU, Purdue, and NW, and hasn't touched the ball since. He's been hurt, but the other two have been drastically more productive.

Correct on those zone stretch plays, but we have been running some iso and dive plays as well. But my point is still the same. When these guys didn’t see a hole right away they would dive into the line instead of waiting a second for a secondary lane to open up.

Unless Wadley played punt return or defense, we still lose 2 games.
