Sandberg Open to Managing Cubs

quade has not done anything to negatively impact the team.

in fact he should probably be given credit for that fact that this team is 18 games under and is still competing daily. they have not given up in the least.

I would criticize him for his handling of the pitching staff, leaving starters out there too long etc., but with some of the guys they have pitching at the back end of the rotation, I don't think he has much choice. Got to save the bullpen sometimes.

I don't think those banging on hendry have much in the way of perspective. Don't think for a second he didn't realize that the Soriano deal would have a lousy back half. He was told by ownership that he had the green light to do anything he could to get the cubs on the WS. All he did was go out and get the premiere FA in baseball.

If the cubs had gotten it done then he would be a genius, if they didn't the soriano deal would look bad. He knew that going in. Other than that I don't see a whole lot of "dumb moves".

I disagree with this. I think he's done fine with the rotation. A few times guys have gone 5 innings and then the 6th is a blunder. When a starter is rolling you let him go, don't stop him. You can't just get into the bullpen after 4 or 5 innings every game or you won't have anyone left. Starters need to go as long as he can. There have been times where it seems like they're in an inning to long, but they were great up until that point and then boom. Happened to Z and Wells this year. I don't think he has done a bad job, has he been perfect, no, but name me a manager who has.

Won't argue with that, my main gripe with Hendry is the farm system, or lack there of, and giving so many no-trade clauses with 6 or 7 year extensions. I don't think contracts should go over 4 years long. Too many variables.

I was trying to say the same thing you are saying, I just worded it poorly. I think he's had to let guys go a little longer than he would have liked to because he was anticipating needing the bullpen the next game or two due to the "veteran" starters like Davis and Ortiz and so on. I think Quade has done the best he can given his circumstances.

And I don't disagree with that. Unfortunately 7 year deals and no trade clause is are the name of the game. it's either play ball or don't resign your premere freeagent players.
again the only truly awful deal was soriano and he along with everybody else knew that would be the case going in.

Its low level minor league baseball, sure its nice to win but records really mean absolutely nothing. Its all about player development.

Obviously, but Sandberg supporters act like he takes minor league terrible teams, turns them around and then moves on to spread his magic to another team. And that is not the case.

Exactly and with Soriano the Cubs immediately turned from nearly a 100 loss team to back to back division champions, including being by far the best NL team in '08 going into the playoffs.

Of course Hendry overreacted to the three game sweep to the Dodgers and made significant changes to a 97-64 team.

I hear you, and that sucks. The one good thing about Max contracts though. I don't think the no-trade clauses are necessary, that's how hallday gets traded etc. those are what irk me. I think with Z and Rammy he was just playing it safe and signing them so he didn't have to compete with other clubs, and if that would've happened, who knows, perhaps the cubs could have been in line to trade for Hallady or Lee. I don't know. Granted at the time the deal made a lot of sense as Z was looking like an annual cy young candidate, but I'm just saying.

all of the guys in question are 10/5 guys anyway so whats the problem outside of the option years kicking in?

It's fair to say that Quade is on the hot seat. Many believed a few weeks ago that he would survive this miserable season. These reports about Ryno surfacing could be a sign that the writing is on the wall for Quade. I don't think Sandberg or any other Manager could have done much with this group of misfits, but someone has to pay. It should be Jim Hendry IMO, but many feel Quade is over his head in this position.

Sandberg isn't coming, and Quade isn't getting fired. The notion that the Cubs "need" to do something just for the sake of doing it is absurd. Firing Quade to bring in Sandberg is not going to fix things; what the team (and organization) needs is a complete overhaul.

I remember watching Maddux on his off days as a player...always taking notes on hitters' tendencies, etc. He's a detail guy and I have often wondered what he could do in a pitching coach, or better yet, the manager or GM role. Someone's gotta take a chance...but I also thought I saw somewhere he wasn't interested in those roles.

I'm as big a Sandberg fan as anyone, but he brings no guarantees and I would hate to see his accomplishments tarnished by managing a bad team and having fans turn on him. Cub fans are impatient right now, rightfully so.

God forbid they ever went the way of Steve Stone...knowledgeable, but full of himself.

I really thought there was no chance of Quade getting fired either, but the feeling seems to be changing by the things I have read lately. I never said it was right, but the Cubs have a history of overeacting
