Sagarin: Iowa #17

Sagarin has Iowa #17, not sure how that's figured with no games played. Maybe something to do with recruiting or returning starters, not sure? Anyway, Iowa State is #59 and if we played this weekend Iowa would about a 14 point favorite at home. It's usually within a few points of the Vegas line. Other Big Ten teams, tOSU #2, Wisconsin #6, MSU #9, Michigan #15 and Northwestern #28.

The Sagarin poll is a computer generated poll that is I think supposed to be based on schedule. You probably already know this so that makes me an idiot. But yeah maybe that is why we are ranked at #17? Though I don't think our schedule is difficult at all.

I don't know either but I thought most computer rankings started out using data from last year, then gradually over the first 6 games, it starts to mix in this year's data and phase out last year's data. Then finally in week 7, it is using only data from the current season.

Or something like that. So Iowa's ranking is based somewhat on how it finished last year. But it must take into acount returning starters too, how else can you explain Michigan's ranking this year? Mich was not that great last year.

I ranted about Harbaugh love a few weeks ago. Let's put the brakes on it until he shows he can beat Michigan State and tOSU and finishes better than 8-5. Wisconsin is also on their schedule this year.

He has finished better than 8-5, twice. And he did beat MSU in 2016, in addition to taking Ohio State to double overtime and losing by three points in Columbus. Two ten win seasons in a coach’s first three years isn’t bad. Michigan has consistently been a top 25 team under Harbaugh despite quarterback troubles. If our roster this year were exactly what Harbaugh has our fans would be raving about the potential. Nobody would say “yeah, but Iowa sucks until they can beat MSU!” When was the last time that you could legitimately say Iowa had, at worst, the fifth best defense in the country? What other team can have two ten win seasons and an eight win season in a three year span and still get constantly trashed for not beating Ohio State or MSU of all teams? I like to poke fun at Harbaugh as much as the next guy, but shouting that he doesn’t deserve respect until he beats those two teams is a dump proposition. I think they almost certainly beat MSU this year, but time will tell.

What the hell do you think you are doing by coming on here talking truth? A lot of times fans just believe what they want to believe regardless whether it’s totally based on delusion. I understand that there are fans who want to pull for the underdog all the time. It is safe territory to be in so that when their teams wets the bed they can shrug their shoulders and say “meh I knew the team was a bed wetter” then change the sheets at the beginning of the season and hope the coaches changes things up a little; like maybe keeping the guys off of fluids.

So we all hope that now that Brian has had an entire off season to work on offensive schemes that maybe he will bring a dynamic offensive scheme to Kinnick. If not and we see the same mundane offense then I am going to adopt a secondary team to follow so that I can enjoy the college football season. It’s always been my favorite sport to follow but watching the same mundane offense year in and year out is anything but fun.

The risk I suppose in taking that approach is that once you get used to following another team and get familiar with their coaches and their recruits you might start to feel more of an allegiance to that team. If your original team keeps struggling and if you have a very successful team as your secondary team one day like the little puppy your eyes will open and you may see things in a whole new light. Loyalty is a wonderful thing but if it becomes a one sided affair then it become more stupidity than loyalty. Reminds me to some extent of spousal abuse where one in the marriage is always on the wrong end of the stick but yet that same person who is always taking the beating is always blaming themselves and making up excuses (were just little ole Iowa) or fantasizing that maybe things will change and yet they never do. PROVE ME WRONG BRIAN!!!!!!!!!!! Please???????????

Damnit Wisconsin, please stop abusing poor little Iowa. She really is a nice girl and doesn’t deserve it.

Thanks. Always wondered how they figured that. Not exactly statistically reliable.

Bye bye. become a Bama fan.

I'm thinking Michigan's defense could be pretty salty this year. IDK how that transfers to w/l, but I think they are going to make people earn it.

Regarding Michigan, to take it a step further, it is my pre-seaon pick to win the B1G this year.

As much as it pains me to say it - since I'm not a fan of Harbaugh at all - I do think this is the season he puts it all together. Look for them to upset OSU and PSU, and beat Wisky in the championship game.

Wishy wash there. Maybe you are a Bama man!

Anyone who thinks Iowa doesn't deserve it is negative. Anyone who thinks Iowa deserves it is a homer. Go figure. That's Football...KF style.

Your not even old enough to know who Bob Commings is.

Nope, I am just getting older and would like to a National Championship at IOWA before the shut the casket. If Brian can’t get the offense more successful then it will likely never happen...................... at least not why a member of his family is at the helm.

Every fan who has stuck with a team for over fifty years deserved at least one. I could see it happening at Wisconsin one day and they built that program on the foundation of FRY. What the hell is wrong with our foundation???

My grandfather lived 81 years a devout Cubbies fan. He never saw them win the big 1. He past away 3 years before the Cubs finally pulled it off.

Desire and reality sometimes never meet at a crossroads.

Interesting. Evidently past performances don't mean much to you. Last year UM got beat by every good team they faced, and the illustrious defense was scored upon by all of them. Those teams were MSU, PSU, Wis, Tosu, and SC. The total score in those games, 131-72. UM's D is vastly overrated and its O hasn't shown much. Nor has Patterson to date.

Michigan ranked #4 in recruiting in both 2016 and 2017. Only Alabama and tOSU did better. I gotta believe that's going to show-up in the results sooner or later.
