He went to college, kept his grades up, and is paying his own way.

he was a soph academically but he still should have 3 years left to play at iowa as he did not play as a frosh in CF

I had heard that over Thanksgiving from one of the coaches at his high school. I didn't know if it was true, so I didn't pass it on. Looks like he was right, he told me he was gonna be grey shirt paying for his first year.

No, and I didn't talk to his head coach, so I didn't know how much the guy knew. I'm guessing because of the run in with the law, but it would only be a guess.
