Rudock officially the starter

I know Rudock hasn't had the starts or game action. I will say, he excelled at the highest level of HS competition, and played in the biggest games you can play in HS...for the mythical NC. You can't ask more than that. He's had two years and a fall of development time, so he should be ready to manage a game and contribute.

How many QBs has Iowa had with that HS pedigree? And I know it's HS...but poise and competitive nature is developed at all levels of play. He's going to have some adversity for sure, but I think he's going to do well. Watching what JVB went through can only help. Having an OC and offensive assistants on the same page can only help too...plus receivers who have also had some time to develop greater route recognition will help.

I've seen several clips of Jake playing in high school. I realize those were highlight videos but man did he throw some nice twenty five to thirty hard passes right on the dime with out receivers breaking stride. The accuracy reminded me of a QB named Chuck Long. If he can develop his skill set at a Big Ten level and we get some speedsters at the receiver position that can catch the ball this could be fun to watch. Oh did I mention a strong offensive line and a good stable of running backs?

He was great in HS...if everyone remembers, U of Miami went after him hard late in the recruiting game. We will be fine, it may take more than a few games for synchronicity to develop, but I think our QB play will not be the issue it was last year (hope not at least). Also, I hope we do get to see Beathard in the second half due to a good lead, or at least vs MoSt for same reason.

Cracked me up when KF stated that Rudock was "more experienced" because he was the #1 back up last year.

Imho, this is not great news for the hawks. I was hoping for beatherd due to what I've read and the fact he is a fresh. My logic is that if rudock was any good, he would've been good enough to take at least one snap in a lost season. So ferentz says that 8 months ago rudock wasn't good enough to take one lousy snap, but now he is our starter. So either ferentz is a moron or this kid really ain't that good.

So a quarter or so's worth of action in blowout losses would have changed your mind?

Or..... He has improved substantially from last season. It can happen. See Stanzi 2007 vs 2008.

Very few QB's start as a true freshman, especially at a team like Iowa or KF's teams. There was Drew Tate, but that was really an aberration or against what KF usually does.

Tate was a back up as a true frosh and started as a sophomore.

beathard is a redshirt freshman. So your comment about true freshman doesn't apply.

I guess I am in the minority, unless Rudock is completely inept, there won't be any QB rotation, no one else getting snaps until October. If the coaching staff feels the need to pull Rudock in the first 4 games it will be a long year.

What are the relative style differences between the three? I obviously have seen none of them play, nor watched film.

Hopefully they know what they are doing - this could go one of two ways:

1) Rudock takes the reins and settles in to the role and does a decent job. I'm not sold on him personally, but I'm willing to give him a shot. The fact that you pretty much know KF isn't going to play anyone else all season because "he's the best option we have" means you hope he can run the offense at a passable (pun intended) level.

2) KF decides to break with tradition and does a QB roundabout with a different QB *possibly* starting each game and can get pulled at any time. This will fry those young guys' nerves and none of them will live to their potential for fear of making a mistake...

I REALLY hope it's number one...but I can also see KF taking a page out of Rhoads' book and playing QB roulette hoping to catch lightning in a bottle with one of these guys.

Still looking forward to basketball more than football...which sucks.

Won't matter who the starter is some of the fans will always want to see the backup play.Lets give him a chance to get his feet under him before we think about playing backups.

I agree with all this... especially the last statement... but I don't think it sucks :)

I would bet Ruddock takes all the snaps. If he takes care of the balls, and moves the sticks they will stick with him. Basically as long as he is not jake christensen he will be our QB.
