Rudock/Beathard Kudos to Iowa's Recruiting?

I was just thinking last night after watching a College Football analysis on ESPN...

Everyone knows the story about Rudock going to Michigan and CJ taking over at Iowa. However, we haven't really discussed what they are doing. Both QB's are having pretty special seasons. Rudock has led Michigan to #12 and CJ has led Iowa to #5.

I realize in both cases the results of both Iowa and Michigan have a lot more to do with the entire team than simply one individual player, but there is no more important position on the field than the QB. Without the seasons they are having neither team would be in the position they are in. Which means that Kirk and his staff spotted both of these guys and convinced them to come to Iowa City. That's pretty damn impressive to have reeled in two QB's who are currently leading their teams to Top 15 level seasons at the Power 5 level.

Whodathunkit?

Just thought this was an interesting way to look at the situation.

Consensus is Rudock is surrounded by 4-5 star talent at Michigan...but here he wasn't good enough. Something doesn't add up there. He either should have been good enough here or....they do have more talent. Sometimes it's just the style of a guy or his intangibles...this group for iowa is a tight team...it makes a difference.

Our starting QBs are better than OSUs

so Rudock's first season was 2011 and CJ was 2012. so which coaches actually recruited them?

KOK recruited both. Beathard actually landed in our laps as he was committed to Ole Miss until they let their coach go and he wanted to go to a pro-style team. So he was recruited and signed by KOK and then 2 days later, KOK bolted for Miami....

Jake is doing just fine at Iowa. I think he has the perfect coach and the perfect system for his ability. CJ is what this team needs. He makes all of the difference. I don't care about the stats, if Jake were the QB at Iowa we would not be 10-0. CJ makes the right play when we need it most. He is a guy the team wants to fight for. He is the leader we needed all along.

This just confirms what we already knew about KF and his staff not going after kids with talent because they have a set way of doing things that worked in the eighties and they won a bunch of football games ten years ago so why should they change it.

I believe prior to the Indiana game Rudock had 8 TDs & 7 INTs. When I watch him play now, he's no different than what he was at Iowa. When everything is perfect: blocking, WRs running precise routes, throwing lane wide open, Rudock has a shot.

CJ on the other hand is completely different. When plays break down, he can really hurt teams.

With JR Iowa probably loses to Pitt, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa St

What's different Jake to CJ? I think it was KF letting go of the offense. Giving the offense to someone who was better qualified. Kudos to KF. I know that was a hard thing for him to do. Who knows how good Iowa's offense would've been with Jake if KF had stepped aside. Wait. I know this. GD would've picked CJ.

I think Rudock was a pretty much pro style QB here, and with our thinness at some of the skill positions (especially WR), it just wasn't the right fit for the game plan and the personnel. CJB is less of a pro style QB, though he certainly can do that, but he also helps to lead the receivers and buy them time to get separation at the end of routes. Rudock was a smart guy, but his athleticism wasn't quite enough to extend a play, so he threw away a lot of balls to the stands to avoid sacks.

I think this kinda gets at something a little more meta in terms of QBs at Iowa. KOK wanted a Brett Favre style guy under center. GD wants Vince Young. KF wants Peyton Manning. CJB is some of all three of those things, where Rudock was certainly no Favre or Young, but definitely understood the game in a way similar to how Manning does.

I am not sure I could say six good years (that's stretching it) with Banks, Stanzi, and CJ, out of eighteen years qualifies as a pipeline. Offensive linemen, yes. Quarterback position, no. Over all QB grade during KF era "C+". Without those three I previously mentioned "D-". Did you notice the common denominator with those three...... MOBILITY. Oh how I wish we could have a QB pipeline to go with our Offensive line prestige that would be a game changer. Now don't get me wrong as I am not saying the other QBs were terrible but I would say they were B1G average at best.

Its just my opinion but at the QB position I would have to give Hayden Fry the slight edge there over KF.

A whole bunch of this.

There's both a physical and mental aspect to being able to do this. There are plenty of QBs who can be great when things go as they should, but far fewer who can overcome the panic button when things don't well. CJ has the physical tools to overcome a broken play, but more importantly he keeps his wits about him. He makes a lot of good choices in less than ideal circumstances.

Don't forget about Drew Tate - I believe he was a 4 year starter. Still in the CFL.
Nathan Chandler led Iowa to 10 wins.

I even think Vandenberg could have been special if he hadn't gotten caught in the transition years.

Don't forget Cody Sokol.
Sokal had the physical tools, that's for sure. At the time when JR, CJB and CS were all here I always felt Sokal was the best when plays broke down. Although exposure to the the 3 was limited to seeing them at a few open practices my impression was JR was the best at executing the game plan as planned and CJB was somewhere in between. Definitely three different types of QBs. I met an airline pilot who flew into Monroe a couple times a week for several years and was an acquaintance of Cody's. He thought we were crazy to have not played Sokal.
