Rudock Appears to be in Good Spot w/ Lions

I guess they are already calling him the next Tom Brady:

When the Lions invited Rudock to make the 30-minute drive from Michigan's campus to team headquarters, he impressed Lions general manager Bob Quinn with his arm and mental makeup.

Rudock was drafted in the sixth round by Quinn, who was in his first months with the New England Patriots when they selected Tom Brady, a signal caller from the same school in the same round in 2000.

"I know there's a little parallel there, but I mean, this isn't the same conversation," Quinn said.

No one is suggesting Rudock is the next Brady, but he has value to the Lions because of his experience as a drop-back passer, accurate arm and intelligence that will likely lead to him being a pediatrics doctor when his playing career is over.

I believe in time after Beathard, Kirk Ferentz, Greg Davis have all moved on, Iowa fans will embrace Rudock as an ex-Iowa player the same way fans talk about all the ex-Iowa QB's. After all he started for 2 years for Iowa and got his undergrad degree from Iowa.

I wish Jake good luck whether he makes an NFL roster or not. I wish him luck when he finally makes it to med school, and I wish he would have made it to the Big Ten CCG last year, and then have Iowa beat him.

With that all stated, Rudock is still Rudock. He is clearly smart enough, and has enough competitive drive to push himself to be better. But he just does not have an NFL arm. Although he got better under Harbaugh, he still didn't put up his 3000 yards by completing deep throws. NFL defenses will pounce on that weakness. I hope I am wrong, we will see.

If he makes it he will be a career backup. Stafford is pretty durable there is a chance Rudock makes the team and never sees the field during a regular season game.

Holding a clipboard for a few years isn't a bad way to ensure your medical school is fully paid for. :)

I wish him well with the NFL. I was hoping that he would be invited to come back to Iowa City in the fall for the Iowa/Michigan game. Give him his "senior day" moment by recognizing him in front of both of his teams and letting him do the coin flip or something. Just thought that would be a classy thing to do on Iowa's part, considering he was a 2-year starter.

NO!

I like that idea. Time to bury the hacket. Rudock's transfer worked out well for everybody. That's rare. So lets welcome Rudock home. Especially when you consider Michigan won't be playing in Iowa City again for another 6 years until around 2022.

Of course I guess they could possibly meet again in the CCG, and Rudock could do the coin flip in Indy instead.

Well, he'll probably be cut by the Meatchicken game, so what the heck!

Ruddock didn't actually write that article in The Players Tribune, none of the athletes write the articles on that site. They are written by anonymous writers who conduct and interview with leading questions and a clear narrative decided beforehand. The first person articles have similar lengths, style, diction, and other similarities even though they are presented as being "written by" the athletes. .I know you guys might think I am harboring a resentment or that I can't let things go. But I just had to point this out.

Bury the hatchet? Uh, Rudock is the one that left.

Nothing against Jake, but a special recognition for a guy who left the program? I don't think so.

I don't think you'll get a majority of fans to want to recognize a player that voluntarily transferred... I really don't think the coaches would remotely entertain that idea. Lots of players transfer on good terms and that's never been brought up seriously before. Is it just because he's a QB?? Leaving on good terms was great sure. But his reward for that is he got to have a good season at Michigan. That's it.

LOL, yes I meant hatchet. Little typo there.

If Rudock left before he had graduated, I would not like the idea as much. But Rudock has an undergrad degree from the University of Iowa. If you stuck around enough to get a degree, then you should be recognized the same as any Iowa alumni.

Hell Iowa does special recognitions for celebrities that only attended Iowa and then dropped out, like Tom Brokaw. Rudock did more at Iowa than Tom Brokaw. It's time to let it go.

I just don't think that matters to most people... It's like caring if your favorite politician is a liar/philanderer etc... People (for the most part) overlook/don't care about it. Graduating is great and all but as a fan of the teams I just shrug my shoulders at that. To me graduation rate is just one more thing used as a recruiting tool for coaches to brag about (if they are good) As far as big name celebs go that's just PR for both parties to benefit from. No more no less...

I don't understand the continued drama surrounding Ruddock. Everyone wanted C.J. to start last year. If we didn't want him for our quarterback what difference does it make that he transferred. If he stayed he probably would have taken over for C.J. when he got hurt and we maybe lose a game. I don't think people would have been happy to have him here. Maybe I'm wrong but I think KF would have been quick to sit C.J. after the injury.

You want to let the guy who started at QB for two years, who arguably shouldn't have been the starter by mid way through his second year and left when he got demoted be a symbolic figurehead? Huh.

I'm sure he's nice.

Rudock's only due reward is his undergrad degree. That's it, he's got that.

I'd imagine that if we revisit this statement in a decade, Tom Brokaw's contributions to society are much more valuable to the university than Jake's ever were.

This, but let's keep in mind we're talking football here.

Jake got his degree. I'm sure he went to graduation and was appropriately recognized for that as it should be. But he did leave the football team, and that's fine too. Not bringing him back for some special recognition isn't holding anything against him, it's just "moving on" as you might phrase it. Why does he warrant some special recognition?
