Rose Bowl - Where to stay?

For those going to the game, where is everyone staying? Is it crazy to try to stay over near the ocean? I'd rather stay over there, but concerned about traffic. Also, it would be fun to stay where other Hawks are.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts/advice.

Cheers!

We got a hotel in Glendale about 6-7 miles from the stadium. I've never been to the Rose Bowl, or LA, so I have no idea on where good places are to stay. I figure the close to the Rose Bowl the better.

You won't get a room anywhere near Pasadena now, without getting gouged. I would stay well away from the action at normal price and perhaps use the Gold line light rail for transport.

We have a rental in Los Feliz, which is near Griffith Observatory (abt 12 miles away). I'm looking forward to it, but am curious how long it will take to get back. And what are people doing for parking?

But LA is a hilariously spread out city

Hawks will conglomerate all over the city and surrounding areas.

There isn't really a "central" area to stay in like there was in Indianapolis or has been in Tampa (St. Pete Beach) or has been in San Antonio (River Walk) or would be in Phoenix or anywhere else. Like a previous poster said, however, the closer to the stadium the better probably.

Getting anywhere in LA takes at least an hour or more because of the traffic so you'll always want to get an early start no matter where you're leaving from

Santa Monica/Venice is great but probably pricey. I would recommend Shade hotel in Manhattan Beach. Awesome beach town with great bars. Hotel is a couple blocks from the beach. Rent a bike and take the Strand down to Hermosa and Redondo Beach piers. A lot going on. Just leave early morning for the game.

debating downtown vs hollywood area - I know nothing about LA - are you renting a car or is mass transit get you anywhere you wanna go? (like NYC)

Hello incoming Hawk fans. I live in SoCal, and would be happy to share my thoughts, for what they are worth. Traditionally, it seems the Big Ten schools have clustered around Century City hotels -- most notably what is now the Hyatt Century Plaza hotel. I'm not sure where they are doing the "official" Big Ten party, but it used to be there. The only reason to stay in Century City is if you want to be close to that event. Otherwise, where you stay depends largely on what you want to get out of your time here. If you want to get in some time close to the ocean, consider Santa Monica (you will see bazillions of Hawks there). I would not recommend Hollywood. It's very touristy and frankly a bit gritty. Downtown is fine with a real up and coming bar and restaurant scene. Look into the J.W. Marriott near Staples Center and L.A. Live. There will be plenty going on there. None of these places are very close to the Rose Bowl. Pasadena has all you could want except proximity to the ocean, but it will be hard to get a room there. Other places that are relatively close to the Rose Bowl, if that is what you are most interested in, are Glendale, Burbank, Arcadia, and North Hollywood. I am hearing that the Rose Bowl parking lots are opening at 4 a.m. on the day of the game. Get there early. There will be no traffic early, but by 10 or 11 that day, it will be tough. If you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to answer them.

thanks man - I figured Hollywood would be a good place, stuff to do, and not TOO far from pasadena - how long would it take to get from the ocean to the game if you stayed in santa monica?

Me and a group rented a house (airbnb) on Hermosa beach, on the ocean.. 3 nights worked out to a little over $300 per person all in.

Socalhawkeye, first time to a Rose Bowl. Wondering your thoughts on actual parking day of game. Will there be adequate or is it imperative to get a parking pass? Or, are the offsite places a legitimate option? Glad you're on here. Too bad I already booked our room in Hollywood before I read your post. But we're close to some friends so we should be fine. Any thoughts on drive time game day from Hollywood to Rose?

Thanks.
