Rose Bowl - Where to stay?

It depends what time of day you leave there. Since this is not a regular work day, getting from Santa Monica to Pasadena will likely take about 45 minutes, but could take as much as an hour and a half if there are accidents, etc. The bigger issue is that the freeways and streets around the Rose Bowl will be packed. I would plan on being in Pasadena and parked no later than 11 a.m. at the very latest.
thanks man - I figured Hollywood would be a good place, stuff to do, and not TOO far from pasadena - how long would it take to get from the ocean to the game if you stayed in santa monica?

Socalhawkeye, first time to a Rose Bowl. Wondering your thoughts on actual parking day of game. Will there be adequate or is it imperative to get a parking pass? Or, are the offsite places a legitimate option? Glad you're on here. Too bad I already booked our room in Hollywood before I read your post. But we're close to some friends so we should be fine. Any thoughts on drive time game day from Hollywood to Rose?

Thanks.
5Hawks, I'm a UCLA season ticket holder (my daughter is a student). General parking for the Rose Bowl is on the Brookside Golf Course, which is immediately adjacent to the Bowl. There is ample parking on the golf course, but you might find yourself 3/4 of a mile away from the stadium if you get there later than, say, 6-6:30 a.m. on game day. The alternative is to park at the Parsons Engineering lot, and take shuttles from there into the Rose Bowl area. I'm not a huge fan of this approach, myself. The downside of parking at the Rose Bowl (likely in the golf course lots) is that it will take a fair amount of time to get out of there after the game. However, that is time that you would otherwise spend catching the shuttle back to Parsons. As far as getting from Hollywood to the Rose Bowl, I would count on at least 45 minutes. The bigger problem, however, is that navigating right around Pasadena will take a lot of time on that day. Don't plan to leave Hollywood at 11 and be parked and at the Rose Bowl by 1:30. Also, if you're not going to the parade, don't go near Old Town Pasadena, and just go directly toward the Rose Bowl. From the 134 Freeway West (which is where you will be coming from if you stay in Hollywood), exit at Linda Vista, and follow the signs to the Rose Bowl.

Boze, I'm having trouble with private messaging. Here are some more thoughts:It depends a lot on what you want to do. Some really fun bars, restaurants, etc. are down in Hermosa Beach/Manhattan Beach/Redondo Beach, and if you're traveling out from Iowa, that would be a lot of fun. The bars will be hopping. But they are a pretty good distance away from the Rose Bowl, and the uber trip will be expensive. If you really don't care about being near all of that, consider staying in Glendale if at all possible. Brand Blvd. and the area around that have plenty of places to eat and drink, and it is only 10-15 minutes from the Rose Bowl.

we will be there for the parade, so we will be there at 8am

SoCal, we are staying at the Safari Inn in Burbank. However we need to catch early flights out of LAX at 6AM and need to head that way after the game. How long will that take from the end of the game to LAX?

So, Undefeated, it's unclear to me if you will be leaving for LAX from Burbank for your 6 a.m. flight, or leaving for the LAX area right after the game and staying in the area near LAX the night before. The traffic on Saturday morning (January 2) will be very light. You should be able to get to LAX from Burbank in about 45 minutes for such an early morning flight. If you leave from the Rose Bowl and go toward LAX immediately after the game, the biggest issue will just be getting out of the Rose Bowl area and onto the freeway. Once you're clear of that, it will take you about an hour to get to the airport area.

Stay downtown or Koreatown and take transit (Gold Line) to the parade and game. They run extra trains with extra cars all night long New Years Eve thru New Years Day.

You really don't want to drive to the game if you can avoid it. If you do... leave very early.

That wasn't real clear. Yes we are leaving the Rose Bowl right after the game to go to LAX.

SoCal -- Great stuff and thank you. Similar to Undefeated we have an early flight out of LAX (5:30 a.m.). We are at the Courtyard Monrovia/Pasadena. Our plan was to go back to the hotel after the game and get some sleep and then clean up and leave for LAX early (say 3:00 a.m.) Do you think that is too late for a 5:30 flight (we'll have rental car drop off as well). Maybe we should leave at 2:30 a.m.??

Old, there won't be any traffic at that time, but count on it taking at least 45-50 minutes to get from Pasadena to LAX. You will likely take the 110 freeway all the way from Pasadena. The car drop off won't take much time, but you'll have to catch a shuttle, and sometimes the security lines can be kind of long. If it were me, I think I would leave at 2:30 to be on the safe side for a 5:30 flight. Better a few minutes early than a few minutes late.

3am is fine. No traffic, 45 min to LAX rental, you'll be in the terminal by 4am, and quick security at that hour.
