Rivals Top 150 List 2012 released today

He has been too good against the best competition in the country to not get noticed.

He got noticed. Some cyclone fan asked Eric Bossi- head rivals scout- about Niang. His response was basically, I've seen him plenty, he might be a top 200 guy.

I saw that. He also said in a thread earlier that he hadn't seen him this year. And this year is when he has been killing people, even 5 star recruits. He still may not end up getting into the top 150 and thats fine. IMO top 50 is a big deal but after that 51-250 is pretty close to the same.

What are the facts?

1. Niang was a (one of) top priority for Fran McCaffrey. This is proven by the fact that he was offered at this stage.

2. He has been too good against the best competition in the country to not get noticed.

The first is simply a blind assertion, you have no idea who Iowa and Fran have prioritized. They have offered and received commitment from one PF already, and have offered at least seven guys from 2012 already, I would hardly call Georges a priority- remember, they offered and secured Kyle Meyer's commitment well before they offered Niang. For ISU he was a priority, Hoiberg handled his recruitment specifically, Fran did not do the same for Iowa. Fran did target Hubbard in 2011 though.

The second is also a blind assertion on your part, one that was also false. He has been noticed, there just isn't much to notice. He plays on an incredibly athletic, stacked high school team, the opposition trots out their third best interior defender to handle Niang and Georges goes to work. Good for him, he will be an okay player in college, but he isn't a particularly special get. He is McCabe/A. White/Meyer level recruit.

That being said, it isn't just you over hyping him, hawkeyereport was acting like Iowa was after some beast of a recruit.

I'm sure he's a decent player but NO fan base over hypes recruits and players than cyclone fans do.
Iowa offered and brough him in for an official visit, even after the now exceptional Kyle Meyer was aboard. I don't know what Fran's priorities are, but neither does the a**wipe poster who now claims that Iowa never wanted him anyways. To Hawk fans I guess it is inconceivable that someone would pick ISU over Iowa.

If you are talking about me, I will send you a check for $500 if you find one post where I said Kyle Meyer was the better player, or that Iowa did not want Niang.

I simply said Niang is getting over hyped, and Iowa offered Meyer first. Both are unranked three stars, Niang has the better offers list.

I'm pretty sure Niang was on an unofficial visit.

You get some, you lose some.

Woodbury is important, just because they're aren't too many good 7-footers, and when one is in your back yard you need to sign him.

As for other positions? For now, I'll give Fran the benefit of a doubt -- we'll see how his incoming class develops as freshmen, and how Marble/McCabe/Basabe develop in year two under FM. If FM shows he can develop 3-star kids into serious Big Ten players, then I won't be too bothered about stars or rankings.

Ryan Bowen was an off-the-radar 3-star, Greg Brunner a top-50 kid. One of them had a 10-year NBA career.... The odds are in your favor if you sign the Brunner every year, but a roster full of Kenny Arnold/Jeff Moe/Bowen/Basabe types could get you pretty deep in the Tournament. For what it's worth, I still shudder to remember that Greg Helmers was at the basement of two top-100 lists -- the assumption seemed to be that after Lohaus, Jepsen, and Earl, Davis was a master at developing centers...uh...no.

This next year will tell us what kind of eye for talent FM really has.....

If Fran doesn't get EITHER Woodbury or Gessell, is that a failure?

Absolutely...not.
1st would it be nice to get some talented kids out of the backyard, yes, but it won' be the end of the world.
Iowa is not a good program right now and these local kids seeing it, doesn't do any favors, granted Iowa could have won 14-16 games last year, so that doesn't hurt.

The other reason that I say no is becuase if Fran were to not get Gesell, but pull off getting Jelon Hornbeak, I will take Hornbeak any day of the week. If Fran can't secure Woodbury, but can get Ibeh, comparable ranking, all good things. Even if Iowa doesn't get kids that have that similar of ranking, it is okay, Fran can coach and develop kids beyond their raw abilities through preperation. Fran recruits kids that feel they have something to prove, at least that is what it seems when reading their comments after they have signed.

While I am a big fan of keeping quality talent close, if the alternatives are better or comparable, then who cares where they come from. People in Ohio may be saying the same things about Aaron White and are glad he is going to Iowa and not Xavier/Cincy/OSU. Local talent can be under and overvalued by fanbases. Kids we don't see all the time are always better than the local kids.

Lastly, it would not surprise me if Iowa were to not get Woodbury or Gesell, but were able to compliment the verbal of Meyer with two or three kids in the mold of Hubbard. Long, athletic and versatile, there are a few on the interest and offer list that fit that are not the typical PG prospects, but have great ball handling abilities and with their athleticism would be more than capable of playing defense. Think about it, wouldn't it make sense to get a couple 6-3 to 6-6 athletes with good ball handling ability and press the heck out of people. Worrying about having a true PG would not be an issue if defensive pressure controls the game.

Blind assertion? No it is not. You guys already have a commitment out of Meyer and yet Fran still chose to offer Niang. Niang isn't a spring offer by any means. He is one of 3 PF's that Iowa offered for this class.

Do you think Fran McCaffrey knows talent? Yes or no? If you say yes, than you have think that Georges Niang is a good ball player. Why else would Fran offer him right now?

Niang led his team in points and rebounds. He went up against two 5 star PF's/Centers and didn't miss a shot with them guarding him. Here is a thread made by a UCONN fan on the rivals site who has seen him.

And like I said, Eric Bossi admitted a month ago that he hadn't seen him play since last summer. I'm sure nothing has changed......

Meyer is a center. Different than a SF/PF type player like Niang is

Why are Niang and Meyer talked about? They are going somewhere, once a player says they are going somewhere, let it go...it would be like talking about Paige, Katenda, Cezar and others...
The Niang/Meyer stuff can take care of itself on the court when Iowa/ISU play, let it go for now...

Hawkstrat thought he would take a little shot at Niang for some reason. Not sure why.

I'll try once again.

Niang, an unranked three star forward with limited athleticism, would have been a huge get, a total coup, it would have proved Iowa and Fran could compete for recruits with the blue blood elites, we could have been final four bound, Niang would have been a completely justifiable reason to run to cyclonefanatic and crow about this awesome prospect Iowa just landed, Niang is big time boyz IMO.
There fixed it for you.
