What is the order for BCS bowls picking at-large teams this year? and could someone refresh me on the new Rose Bowl rule? Thanks.
The bowls that lose the conference champion to the NC game get the first 2 at-large picks as replacements, whatever bowl the #1 ranked team was suppose to go to gets the first at-large then the bowl that lost the #2 ranked team gets the second pick.
The Rose Bowl rule is if they lose either the Big Ten champ or Pac 10 champ to the NC then they must select a non-AQ team if they are ranked in the top 8 of the final BCS standings and can't take the conference runner-up as a replacement.
The picking order this year is: Sugar, Orange, then Fiesta. Rose isn't included because they will get Big Ten and Pac 10 champ or 1st or 2nd at-large pick for a replacement and have 2 teams.
Say Alabama and Ohio St are in the title game this year ranked #1 and #2, while Boise is #3 or in the top 8, the Sugar gets the first replacement since they lost Alabama (this is where they take Florida), the Rose gets the next replacement but must take Boise because they are in the top 8 and couldn't take Iowa if they are in the top 14. Then the Sugar would get the next pick (this is where they take Iowa) followed by the Orange then Fiesta for the at-large picks. So basically the Sugar would get 2 of the first 3 picks to grab Florida and Iowa.
OK two things....can someone explain to me how the Pac-10 will work if USC wins the Pac-10 title. That would technically mean the team behind them is the "runner up" there for not eligible for the Rose Bowl. Correct? Or is there some special loop hole that happens because USC is on probation?
Secondly, what ranking does this Rivals projection have Iowa at at the end of the season to be selected for the Sugar Bowl?
Wow. This blog has gotten very far ahead of itself. I wouldn't worry about getting screwed out of the Rose Bowl until the Hawks have actually PLAYED A GAME. So many things can happen with a season, you are setting yourself up for a fall if you are reserving hotel rooms in January now. I look at last season and see the last second breaks that went Iowa's way(like the MSU game) and see the possibility for 3 losses, or more. Iowa needs to concentrate on navigating its schedule first, and leave the preseason hype train alone.
And for all the people saying they would love to play Florida, I say this
Bwahahahahahahahaha....
Urban Meyer is an egocentric weirdo, but he has two things going his way.
1. He can coach.
2. His current team is oozing elite level talent
I would not want to play Urban Meyer and Florida. I think you are setting yourself up for a USC like game. Beating GT last year was great, but a triple option team is tailor made for a defense that has a great DL that can neutralize the run game, and free up the LBs. Keep in mind that same GT team was crushed by a middle of the road SEC team(Georgia) at the end of the year. Perspective needs to be kept here.
