Rittenberg: AZ is 'trap game' for Hawks

Serious question: With the expectations of Hawkeye Nation so high, at this point isn't every game a trap game?

hwkwyld - I remember seeing your username in my dream last night. Sorry if this is extremely creepy just thought I'd tell ya ;)

Wow, I didn't know I made such an impact. BTW if my user name was on a name tag saying "My name is..." and attached to a long legged busty blond, I've got bad news for you. :D

This doesn't qualify for a "trap game". Everyone close to the Iowa program remembers what happened the last time we went to the state of Arizona to play a night game. I don't think we will be overlooking Arizona or for that matter anyone else this season.

Add to that the fact many teams will have us circled on the calendar this year, I agree. As excited and confident as I am about this season, I'm also aware several games could have gone the other way last year. We cannot dig the same holes this time and expect to come out with W's.

While I kinda agree, this is as much of a trap game as any because of the things surrounding the game (timezone, travel, heat, etc.) You could argue MSU or NW or really anything else but the same argument of Iowa not overlooking anyone would come into play because after last year, I doubt Ferentz is even taking E. Ill for granted.

That game sucked badly. Granted, it was ASU but your point remains a good one.

Early-Season road games always worry me. Even in 2002, we barely squeaked by Miami (OH) on the road, something like 29-24. The losses at ISU, the ASU game in 2004, etc. I look at this one no differently. Trap game, IMO.

I agree that KF won't be looking past anybody and won't let the team do that either, especially with the way we played at home last year against UNI and Arkansas St.

EVERY September game is a trap for Iowa. Always has been under KF. Plus anytime we play Northwestern. It's just a given.

I think Rittenberg does a great job with his BT blog but no way in hell is OSU vs. MN a trap game. I hope Brewster is working on his resume as unfortunately for us this will be his last year coaching in the BT.

Ohio State at Minnesota, Oct. 30: The Buckeyes might be 8-0 heading to the Twin Cities, thinking national title and looking forward to a bye week before the stretch run against Penn State, Iowa and Michigan. Minnesota has been a poor late-season team under head coach Tim Brewster.... If the Buckeyes overlook this matchup like they did with Purdue in 2009, they could be sorry.

Not counting bowl games, what was the last game Iowa won out west?

Great Question.

I offer the following historical data (beginning in 1979):

9/25/82....Iowa 17, AZ 14
12/1/84....Iowa 17, Hawaii 6
9/12/87....Iowa 15, AZ 14
9/3/88......Hawaii 27, Ia 24
9/26/92....Colorado 28, Ia 12
9/24/94....Oregon 40, Ia 18
9/19/98....AZ 35, Ia 11
9/18/04....ASU 44, Ia 7

I count that record as 3 wins and 5 losses.

Average win score was 16.3 to 11.3 (+5 points)
Average loss score was 34.8 to 14.4 (-20.4 points)

I dont know if we can compare our last trip to this trip.We didn't know what we had in Drew Tate at the time, where Stanzi is 18-4 as a starter. We are two different teams going out to play in the sandbox this time. This Hawkeye team has much more leadership on the Offesive side than the team that played against ASU.

The AZ game doesn't follow the classic definition of a "trap" game, but it will be a big challenge.

A "trap" game has usually meant a game that should be a win, but can turn into a loss, frequently due to other factors in the schedule. OSU at Minny could be a trap game, I also like the Iowa at Indiana game that Rittenberg lists in the "other" category. Any road game against a weaker opponent can turn into a trap game.

They are all tough games except E. Illinois and Ball State.

We should win those 2 game without a problem (I think).

The rest of them - we could win them all but we could lose several of them as well.

Isn't the widely accepted definition of a trap game considered to be a game that falls in between two big games? Take last years game vs. Ark State for example - it came right after the ginormous win in Happy Valley, but a week before Michigan came to Kinnick for prime time national telecast. Arkansas State was the classic trap game, and Iowa played like it that day. You could tell that there attention was focused elsewhere.

You can’t really say we "rolled" many teams last year (save ISU and GT), so with all due respect to our returning talent...almost every game makes me nervous! Think about how many teams we ticked off last year:

-Penn State (while under equipped at QB) will be out for blood.
-2pt win in the Big House last year...hardly dominated.
-Badgers ruled the first half, Clay will have a hard time running but they are tougher this year
-MI State...thank god for Stanzi and McNutt. They are no slouch this year
-Indiana, we needed four late last year
-Northwestern, our version of PSU vs Iowa. This is ALWAYS a game
-OSU - It's OSU. This could be a repeat of determining the Big Ten Champs..

Last year was amazing but part of that amazement was winning VERY close games. Until we go in and pile drive teams, the range of results for 2010 could be large.

All that said, we have some rock stars back and if they play like rock stars, I should be able to save my fingernails for another season.
