Rick Brown: Hard to believe, but some Iowa 'fans' don't want an NCAA bid

Well, some fans are whiny babies. Its a small group of crappy fans.

Sure, I would have liked to win the last two games and we should have. Still very happy to be dancing with a chance to win.

So 10 to 20 people who may or may not be 13 years old tweeting they dont want Iowa in the dance necessitates an article suggesting some legit portion of the fan base actually feels that way? The only thing dumber than not wanting Iowa in the tournament is extrapolating 10 to 20 tweets of people who serously may be made up entirely of young teenagers to suggest that is even remotely in line with any legit part of the fan base.

Eggzactly!

If not young teenagers then it is from those that can only find balance through chemicals.

We do have one of the worst fanbases around. I think that's been obvious over the last few weeks, a very self-loathing group.

Every fan base has the same problem, we don't have anywhere close to the worst fanbase around.

No WE DON"T. Just a ridiculious thing to say. See there is a certain fan, we have them on this site and I won't name names that think anyone who is critical and don't think or speak like they or you do, then those are BAD FANS or SO-Called Fans..

I'm 45 years old and I have traveled this great country to watch the Hawkeyes year in and year out. Hawk Fans are AWESOME and VERY PASSIONATE.. I admit I'm the first person that is very critical of coaching and stuff like that but end of the day that is how I roll and this is a message board and that is I some choose to use it to voice frustration and or revel in the good.

Truth.

The blindly obedient authoritarian personality is never able to identify itself as such.

It calls itself "true fan" or "real American" as it's worldview crumbles, blindly oblivious to reality. This occurs in all facets of life.

Funny part is...people that are criticizing the fans...are probably the same people who refer to our football coach as "kurt" or complain about everything with the football program.

Funny how the ball bounces, eh?

It has nothing to do with criticizing. If a person sits here today and for whatever reason doesn't want the Hawks in the tournament, then they are not a fan.

Pretty simple.

As someone who lived in Iowa for several decades and has lived away for several years now, I will give you my take.

Within the borders of the state, Iowa is hands down the dominant sports program for BB and FB. ISU has been historically awful in FB...they've certainly had their runs in BB, but historically they've had significantly less success than Iowa. Drake & UNI are completely side shows.

The end result, frankly, is that Iowa (hard truth #1) gets sucked up to a LOT in the "land between two rivers" (the entire basis for the "Little Brother Syndrome" we're all so familiar with).
In reality, on a national scale, Iowa has historically been (hard truth #2) respectfully above average (which ain't too bad for the smallest B10 public university, small population base, sharing the state with another BCS program, etc)

The problem is the gap in fan expectations that hard truths #1 & #2 creates amongst a certain % of the fan base. Rick Brown needs to realize this certain % of the fan base has a mental trophy case full of CFB national championships (reality = Iowa really probably has NO national championships...some people count 1958, but in all honesty that title probably belongs solely to LSU) and rows & rows of mental Final Four banners (reality = Iowa has 3...2 of which we're coming up on 60 year anniversaries for).

My experience living outside of the state is when I mention being a Hawkeye fan:
1) in a college hoops context, the response is a disinterested "huh"
2) in a college football context, the response is either a disinterested "huh" OR, if the person happens to be a fellow CFB fan it's a "you guys are good every once in a while" type response.

In conclusion, I think lots of us need to get off our high horses and re-frame our expectations.

You don't get around here much do you?...say that on the football forum and people will accuse you of accepting mediocrity (e.g. the same people that supported getting rid of Mr. Davis...to reach that "next level"...)

But yeah, good points.

If Rick Brown thinks this is appalling and embarrassing for the team and our fans, perhaps he should have done the team/fans a favor by not amplifying the drastic minority (aka fringe) of the fan base that is saying stupid things.

I have not seen anyone say that they don't want Iowa in the tournament. The problem with twitter and idiots, is that anyone can tweet that they are Hawkeye fans and don't want to see us in the tournament. They are most likely Clown fans, trolling. It's the idiot that is dumb enough to publish an article based on such trolling. I could open up a twitter account and claim to be an ISU fan, that wants Fred Hoiberg fired. That doesn't make it truth.

I would like to see Iowa in the tournament...but don't really think this team "deserves" to be in the tournament.

It's the exact opposite of last year...last year's team deserved a bid...didn't get one...this year's team doesn't really deserve one...but will get one.
