Rhoads had some interesting things to say about Iowa's O-Line

I admit that I would like to see more fire out of KF, but I think there is a happy medium between zombie like, and maniac.

if you were paying attention v. isu, he got all over the offense during a time out. we were deep, had to call a time out for some reason, and during the TO, it showed a sideline shot. man, he was chewing something, and it wasn't his gum he quit chewing........all over several folks in the sideline huddle. this thing about no emotion/passion is absurd.

As much as some of the fan base are disgruntled with Ferentz, I don't think there is any doubt he has the utmost respect of his players. They know when he's ******. He doesn't have to jump up and down or grab facemasks to get their attention.

As far as Rhoads comments go, I think he was being a bit ingenuous and self serving.

He was ****** at Cotton. Cotton lined up on the wrong side and they didn't have enough time to get him over to the other side so Rudock took the timeout. KF was going right at Cotton...for good reason. You want playing time, you better pay attention.

And for the moron who thinks because we line up the same, say in a two tight end set, that doesn't mean the line calls are the same...that's what Rhodes is referring to as far as complexity. We lined up in the same formation several times, but we blocked the plays differently, sometimes on successive plays. We man blocked, we ran the stretch, we pulled the guard around to lead the hole, everyone blocked down and we pulled the guard to kick out the end. Now you put your TE's in motion and change the line calls, it presents another look and unbalance opportunity that the defense needs to adjust to. Honestly, to keep everyone on the same page and know their assignments is pretty freaking impressive.

But you watch the game you are watching...it's easier for you to find things to complain about...do you know the line..."better to be a fool and keep your mouth shut, rather than open it and confirm it to everyone."

I don't understand why Hawk fans are so eager to judge anything about ISU (let alone any opposing team or coach). There are times it strikes me as quite pathetic, especially when it's so blatantly hypocritical and myopic toward the struggles the Hawks continue to fight through.

What a dumb post. Because we went 4-8, we're not permitted to comment on opposing teams? Sure there've been hypocritical/myopic posts, it's a message board, but the post you responded to was reasonable.

Besides, ISU resides at an entirely different level of suck.

Didn't stop clown fans during the Chiz years from talking ****.

Class way he conducts himself? Okay, maybe in press conferences, but the guy jumps up and down like an idiot on the sidelines, and when his team pulls an upset, he acts like they just won the greatest championship ever created. It's not very classy.

How many of you saw Rhoads in the first half last Saturday jump right at the side judge and point at the sideline where the ball should be marked.

I am not sure if I have seen many D1 college head coaches bend over and point his finger a few inches above the ground and look at the official like 'spot it here'!!!

I have thought some of his sideline antics were a little Little Leagueish but this pointing thing looked really weird and almost childish. Some coaches might walk over by the official and give him some verbal help but not show them up and point at the ground for a spot.

I've seen Iowa assistant coaches do it. I have no problem with Rhoads' passion and occasional silliness. My only problem is that he's a Cyclone. Which as you know is a bird.

that is a good one. I see assts do it also but that is what they are there for.

Did anyone notice in the second quarter when Iowa came out in the wrong set on offense. Iowa called a timeout, and the offense came over to the sidelines, Kirk was there doing his best Fran rant, complete with finger pointing, walking away, and coming back for some more, walking away, and then giving it to the players again.

I hadn't seen that in a while from him, but he was PIZZED off. I also think it worked.

It was because we were just about to snap the ball and incur an illegal formation once again for not covering up the tight end (I think). We had the exact same penalty earlier in the second quarter and almost did it again. Making the same careless pre-snap penalties will incur wrath of coaches for sure.

LOL, I can't think of an easier offense to stop than one that literally runs the ball on 12 consecutive plays. We don't exactly have Melvin Gordon running the rock, either. What exactly did you expect him to say after that debacle? Iowa's not very good, but we're JUST THAT BAD? Iowa's scheme was about as complicated as children's pop-up book, but my coaching staff is so stupid and/or our players are so terrible that they made Greg Davis look like Bill Walsh?

There was absolutely no reason to do anything but line up and run the ball right down Iowa State's throat. They could not stop it. No reason to do anything different. As Hayden would say" Scratch where it itches"

If our line schemes are so complicated, Northern Illinois must have the smartest defensive coaches in all of football. Congrats to them. Where were these brilliant line schemes last year, pray tell? Maybe the solution to stopping Iowa's vaunted offense is a closely guarded secret known only to MAC defensive coordinators and shared during special midnight meetings around a campfire, deep in the woods where virgins are sacrificed and Bo Pelini cackles while sticking pins into voodoo dolls representing various Omaha sportswriters.

Really? Hmm, I was under the mistaken impression that we rushed for over 200 yds against Northern Illinois. It wasn't our rushing success that lost us the game, it was our secondary. But don't let facts get in the way of a good, emotional argument.

And where was the rushing game last year? Let's see, we lost two starting OL to season ending injury. We lost most of our RB corp to concussions, high ankle sprains and ACL tears. And we were a year younger last year. Under your thinking, the 2001 offense should have rushed for the same number of yards as the 2002 offense, right?

Dude, you really should just stop before you make yourself look more dense than you already have. Just a friendly word of advice.

I disagree. We should have been running play action the whole 4th quarter and taking knees. No need for anyone to get a boo-boo.

2. Iowa's run scheme, particularly with two tight ends, is very sophisticated and something that is hard to prepare for and to defend against.

They had two weeks to prepare, and let's be honest, they had much of fall came to prepare because they obviously didn't spend extra time on UNI.

They are going to struggle a great deal this year.

Paul is a good person, and I think a great fit there at Iowa State. It will be interesting to see just how patient the most patient fanbase in America will be after a 2-10 season at best. Most will be, some will grumble but not as many as there will be supporters would be my bet. Now if they stunk again next year, then it begins.

Good God you are dumb!

I'm sure you have 20 National Championships in NCAA football and you were probably block champion in Tecmo Bowl back in the day....but real world football is just SLIGHTLY different and more complex. You claim nothing is easier than stopping an offense on 12 staight rushing plays. Really? So you know whether they're going right or left? You know whether they are going weakside or strongside? You know whether they're going inside zone or outside zone? You know when they're going to pull the guard or tackle and from which side? You know whether they're going to follow the lead fullback or run counter away from the lead and use the fullback as backside kickout? You know whether we're going to go straight zone or man? You know if we're going to run motion with one of the tight ends?

It's amazing you're only posting on a message board and not making a living as a Defensive Coordinator....you've apparently got it all figured out!

Or not.

Great post Spider...only thing I can add is that we had over 200 yards rushing in the NIU game and our offensive coordinator somewhat abandoned the run in the second half...opting to pass on third and short three times. We could have put up 300 on them if he would have stuck to the ground attack and taken some two down territory decisions. We wore them down in the first half and it should have continued. I'm sure he wishes he had that back.
