Rewatched the ISU Game

Watched the game much more sober last night and the player that really stood out for me was Drew Ott. I thought he had a heck of a game and really think he is going to be a handful as we progress through the season.

I wanted Beathard to win the job and was pretty unimpressed with Rudock through the first 2 games but I have completely flipped on that after the ISU game. He is a smart QB and if you knew nothing about Iowa football there is no way you would guess that was just his 3rd college game and 1st career road start.

I said this in another thread earlier in the week and just want to repeat it. Give me more Hamilton, Duzey, HKC and Kittle and less CJF.

Kickoff coverage was brutal, IMO. If that doesnt get shored up it will end up costing Iowa a game this year.

I want to see KMM, Hillyer and Smith get a majority of the reps at WR from here on out. Cotton and Shumpert are just running out of time. No idea what Powell will give us this year.

Was talking to a buddy today about some of these things. CJF needs to catch the dang ball, seems to be a message board legend, more than an impact player on the field.

Smith seems to be a deep threat, we just need to hit him. We went over the top to him a couple times on major over throws, and hit him at the 2 on another deeper route. KMM just gets open. Doesn't seem to be a deep threat, but always has a step or two on the defender. Take the TD for example, he made that an easy throw for Jake, as he had 2 steps on the defender. Hillyer seems to get some separation as well, just need to make sure he catches the ball first. Cotton and Shumpert just don't get open, and when they do, don't catch the ball. Would like to see more Vandenberg, McCarron, and Powell in their spots.

The route that KMM ran on that touchdown was a thing of beauty. Run action to the opposite side and he ran a perfect back out route that is impossible to cover. Easy throw for Rudock, even rolling to his left.

CJF was highly talked about by the media and coaches. I think message boards have been more down on him.

Disagree on the sober part (rum Tuesday?).
Agree on Ott. He's got a great motor, solid bull rush (tremendous leverage), and does a decent job setting the edge (Additionally, huge beard and Mohawk!?!?=awesome).

I'd like to see TSmith continue to get better at consistently catching the ball, but his speed can definitely stretch the field. Imagine Powell, Smith, and KMM all on the field at the same time (and Weisman in the backfield). That'd stress the defense, greatly.

Respectfully disagree on the bolded. He was a message board legend amongst the likes of the Big Human, Bonecrusher and Stephane Ngoumou. The coaches always get the heat for "not using him properly". It appears that he isnt one of our more useful TE's.

Agree on Ott. He seems to be improving every game and to know that he is only a true sophomore is exciting.

Smith has a lot of potential so lets hope he can emerge as a legitimate second option to KMM.

The expectations of CJF were far too high. He had one drop really the other one was well defended by the linebacker and it appeared he had a hand in preventing the catch. CJF did a great job of blocking against ISU and he made a huge play for a first down in the second half.

It looks like KMM will be doing a lot of the dirty work underneath. It would nice if he could get more help. he will be Iowa's version of wes welker. I would bet Rudock's completion percentage would be around 65% without all those drops.

Over/under on how many CJF threads that will be started between now and the end of the year, I will say one per week between now and the end of the year. Followed closely by Nico Law and Jordan Canzeri.

CJF will get his 30 or so catches for the year put up decent numbers at the combine and some NFL team will become mesmerized by his size and those gigantic meat hook hands.

It's ironic that the strength of CJF's game is his blocking considering that was the reason he wasn't seeing the field earlier in his career. Now he just needs to work on catching the balls that are thrown to him rather than complaining about the ones that aren't.

I think he was when he was recruited and as a fr, So. Not so much lately.

I dont think CJF problems are on the coaches. Iowa has some good TEs right now. CJF needs to put somethings together. I think he has shown parts and flashes of being a good TE and I think every year the coaches have talked highly about him at the beginning of the year. I think the fans have gotten excited about him early in years and then after a couple of games have notice hes not as big of a part of the offense.

Re-watched it as well and it wasn't nearly the domination that people have made it out to be. Iowa really struggled through the first quarter and a half and it wasn't until the long drive with 13 running plays towards the end of the 2nd quarter that Iowa really started to assert their will on the game. It's also disconcerting that in the two biggest drives of the half (the long rushing drive and the drive following the Morris pick) Iowa could not punch it into the endzone and had to settle for field goals. A good football team would have had a much bigger halftime lead than 13-0 for as bad as ISU looked in the first half. Their QB was also very clearly affected by the ankle injury suffered against UNI and was a shell of his usual self. They looked pretty bad against one of the worst teams in the country for the first 23 or so minutes and the last 7 minutes of the game. So that's about 30 good minutes of football and 30 bad minutes. The running game is not flashy but efficient. We have no gamebreakers or explosive players to speak of anywhere on the team, on either side of the ball. This team is going to struggle when it sees actual, real football teams in the Big Ten, and I expect a 4 quarter battle on Saturday against WMU.

Correct me I am wrong...
Didn't Iowa have a couple drops on a 2 different drives in the 1st quarter that would've moved the chains?

We make those catches, the offense beats up the ISU D some more early.

The whole rest of your post sucked so I just left this part. I disagree with this part, I think Iowa wins comfortably. How about if you're wrong, you take your 50 posts and go away and if I am wrong I will never post here again? Sound good?

Alts never die 136. So I dont know that you would win all that much.

Also I think the WMU game to be close they are better than ISU and MO ST. This is also the 3rd B10 team they are playing on the road.

I think Iowa continues to move the ball like they have been but figure out their issues inside the red zone finally.

Iowa wins 48-17.

Coulda.. Woulda... Shoulda....

We catch one more TD pass in 5 of our games last year and we finish with a 9-3 record.

Honestly, I don't think you need to enter into a wager with this numbskull, as I think The Diesel will be dropping teh banhammer soon.

Not the point...
sheldor was stating we didn't look good/wasn't dominating right away. My argument is based on us shooting our own self in the foot.

Alas, it's all done and over with, and we got the W.

We dropped TD passes in 5 games last year? That sucks, I wish we would have caught those. We were even better than I thought.

No way you watched that game once, let alone re watched it. Only a complete and total fing imbecile could say that Iowa didn't assert it's will until the 15 play drive. On the first 3 possessions (first 17 min of the game), Iowa had 133 total yards and a TD. If they would have moved the ball that effectively the whole game that is 466 yds of total offense, instead of the 368 they ended up with. In that same time period ISU had managed 29 yards on 3 possessions. My God you are dumb, and don't know sh!t about the game of football.
