Rewatched the Iowa vs OSU Game

I hope the Ferentz's and other coaches really took something from this game. What I noticed the most is that Iowa "attacked" this game and was in attack mode throughout. Typically in these big games, Iowa takes the approach to not take chances, control the ball, play it close to take the game in the 4th quarter to have a chance to win.

It was almost as if the coaches in the Ohio St game threw caution to the wind and said the hell with it and just let the players play loose and took chances. It felt and looked like they had the "What the hell do we have to lose!" kind of attitude. They attached the entire game and looked to strike fast which goes against Iowa's tendency. They put pressure on Ohio State and it worked.

So Brian Ferentz, learn from this game as your offense could play similarly to this most games. Set them free.

I agree, but part of me realizes that the more we do that the more teams will be better prepared for it. I think maybe a better balance is play Kirk ball against the teams we match up with and play whatever it was against OSU for those couple games a season where we are out matched or just dont match up well against.

They also didn’t blitz us heavy. Which helped.

That was my immediate takeaway when I watched the game live, when Stanley doesn’t get pressured (whether it’s good blocking or the other team neglecting to blitz) ridiculous things happen.

They blitzed 6 on one play in particular that I remember and Stanley threw a TD with an OSU player hanging onto his leg. Couple more times of that and no one is going to be liberal with the blitz.

I think some of you really dobt get it. Iowaxhad a very good team last year. Wadley, Jewell, Jackson and others. Darn good team of players. Ferentzing has the effect of keeping other teams in the game.

Keep doing the same thing over and over and teams can stop you whether they are OSU or NIU.

It's pleasing to hear that I'm not the only one that still has this game on their DVR.

I was fortunate enough to be at this game and even managed to make the trip down from row 78 to rush the field for the first time. When Hooker intercepted that first pass and dove into the endzone, the vibe within Kinnick Stadium totally changed from "we're gonna get our butts kicked" to "not today." The Gazette's headline the next day was very fitting: "Woodshed, IA 52242”.

Memories like these always put a big ole grin on my face.

One game does not a season make. (perennial note to ISU).
And yet here we are acting like clown fan central after they beat Oklahoma State. I've been to some big Iowa games and this game was by far the best I've ever seen just because of the number of times OSU has bitchslapped Iowa. But Bosa getting tossed and them not putting any pressure on Iowa made this game an outlier. Other than maybe the Georgia Tech bowl game, I don't think I've ever seen such a perfect storm happen for Iowa against a really good team.

Agreed on defenses that blitz/pressure us give us fits. We are like a basketball team that can't handle a full court press or trapping defense. OSU didn't press us. As a coach, you feel a ton of relief when teams don't challenge your weaknesses. I think they thought they could waltz in and crush us without coming with a full menu.

Urban’s pride cost him the game. He thought his athlete could crush us playing straight up. If he with all of his four and five star players had played the typical seven or eight in the box defense that our coaches can ever seem to figure out how score against, then I am certain the results would have been totally different. We also likely would have been discussing who the backup quarterback would be now that Stanley is seriously injured.

Instead of switching to that in the second half ole errogant a$$ Urban was hell bent to prove he had the superior athletes and coaches to come back and crush us in the second half. Thanks Urban for being so proud and arrogant and insisting on playing the only type of defense that our offense is effective against.

Purdue proved in spades what an a$$ you are. All I could think of after the Ohio State game was “Merry Christmas to all and to all a goodnight!!!” After the Purdue game the thing that went through my head is the old song that goes “Back to Life, back to reality. Back to life, back to reality!!!”

The look on Urb's face, watching his team get destroyed, along with his chances to make the playoff was priceless and one I'll always cherish. Urb's face along with that Buckeye fan's face, the guy that gets all dolled up in the Scarlet and Gray face paint and garb is cherishable for ever.

Yes, one definitely has to be careful as there is a fine line there. I guess Iowa just has to work to be unpredictable, not so much a carefree gun slinging team.

I've re-watched that game maybe 10 times and my take is that one of the RBs is going to need to step up to the plate this year. We are going to miss AW. The guy played like the game rested on his shoulders - this one and against the Clones in particular - and he was a force to be reckoned with. I think most of the position units will be fine, with little fall off from 2017, except for the RBs and possibly the LBs. Have a little more confidence in the defense from an historical perspective. Three weeks to go and then we start finding out!

AW also had an outstanding game against Penn St. Unfortunately, it was masked by Barkley's game that day.

I agree, they did blitz, but as Xeres pointed out, their linebackers were a liability that day and left our TE's open. So, when they blitzed the LB's, they were more susceptible.

And then the next week and in the Purdue game we saw a 3-4 and the o-line looked like a monkey fvcking a football trying to figure out which LB was going to be the 4th rusher and none of our TEs got open.

It was masked by Ferentzing ...playing not to lose.

Lol we could barely move the ball in that game. It was simply amazing that we were in that game until the final drive. I'm fairly confident that Kirk ball was the only reason we were in the game. Now NW and Purdue games are the ones you point to where Kirk ball hurt us. Maybe if we had went for the throat early on those teams maybe we could have kept them from getting confident.

They opened it up in the 2nd half and that's why the chains were moved. None of us will ever know though. I'd bet the opposite.
