Rewatched Iowa State Game

I really don't think that Stanley played that poorly after rewatching the game. He ended up 16-28, but there were three outright drops. I saw five passes that were thrown poorly, the important 3rd down route to Easley late in the game, the down the middle deep ball, an out to Easley, the go route to Easley on the sideline where he became a defender, and a pass that Fant caught that was behind him and if it was thrown properly Fant gets another 20 yards.

Iowa State played the Wisconsin defensive game plan EXACTLY from last year...attack the line of scrimmage. This was a very good prep game for Wisconsin. I didn't realize how much Iowa State blitzed in this game. Holy crap...they sent two guys several times on pass plays. I knew they attacked the line of scrimmage in the run game, but they were sending guys on every pass play too. They wholeheartedly trusted their corners one on one on the outside...on every snap.

The blitz pick up for the most part was pretty good. The thing I noticed is when the blitz pick up was good...Stanley got the ball out to his safety valve immediately regardless..too soon in my opinion. When they blitzed with two...and protection holds...there were receivers running deeper routes that were open. He needs to trust his protection, but I also understand why he may not.

Colbert played a great football game. Was where he was supposed to be and then some. He made plays. He got back in the passing lane on those deep outs like a veteran and made plays in the running game and on Montgomery in the passing game. He is quick to the ball.

The Rose kid on the ISU side is a fast LB. He's going to be very, very good. He made plays in the running game all day with speed. He single handedly stopped the bubble screen to Cooper with speed to the ball. That was a big play if he doesn't make the play.

I'm going to be interested to watch and see how ISU's defense does against other teams. Watching them on tape gives you the impression they are legit and have playmakers all over the field.

I agree ISU might just be a pretty good team.
We still need to play better, but I didn't think it was all doom and gloom like the board was after either.
Progress from qb to te and wr is what we need the most. Lines seem to be coming along. Loved that sack our D got with no down lineman, Is didn't know what was coming.

I’d bet Oklahoma will put 40+ on them. Most defenses look stout against our offense.

Iowa may be tried and tested for the Wisky game. I think they may have just played one of the best, possibly, second best defense in the Big 12. The fact that Iowa handled the blitz pretty well is a positive, at least blocking wise. Now Stanley needs to punish teams for blitzing. N Illinois is no patsy either, so I think this may bode well going forward.

Well the playoff team, Oklahoma, with a Heisman Trophy QB, only put 31 on them in Norman. This one is played in Jack Trice with that stupid Cyclone warning thing. That's got to strike fear in them.

Let's see how it plays out. I'm just saying ISU's defense passed the eye test to me. Go through the personnel...speed pretty much everywhere in the back seven...athletic safeties also. Time will tell.

The better teams (like Iowa State and especially Wisconsin) are going to blitz Stanley until we burn them with our WRs. We did burn them in the 3rd and 4th quarters with big plays to ISM and Brandon Smith.

The commentators on FOX thought that the ISU defense was terrific.

I think Iowa will be ready for Wisconsin

Offensively Iowa needs to work backwards. What I mean by that is we need to set up the run with the passing attack.

These first two games BF continued to run against stacked boxes and didn’t show much. The optimist in me thinks he’s saving the wrinkles for the bigger games on our schedule.

The question will be can our passing attack especially the vertical passing attack get the job done. With ISM, Fant, and Smith I think the potential is there but we will see if it materializes when we need it.

Nate is fine. Made big time throws in winning time saturday in the 2H to ISM and Smith. ISM has been a little dinged up and Smith is still a young player trying to get confidence. Hopefully get their rhythm in order Saturday vs UNI before UW comes to town.

in the interest of balance, Stanley also had two bad passes where the receiver bailed him out and made the catch.

I was at the game, ISU D is legit, probably better than Wisconsin's. ISU D played very aggressive against us. Why is it that we always seem to have good/great defenses every year, but our offenses seems to struggle? Mind boggling.

Notice how, in recent years, we've done crap like flea-flickers and reverse-passes in first couple games, but NOT this year? Makes me wonder...

Probably better than Wisconsin? I mean maybe, but let's pump the breaks for a couple weeks. Hope you're right though.

Agree with all of this.

I didn't see the game until last night (I was at a wedding in Iowa and the couple had the nerve to schedule a wedding the day of the Iowa-ISU game.......).

A few thoughts:

The offense still has a long ways to go, IMO. I do honestly believe it will get better, but, there are a lot of kinks and a lack of rhythm. Stanley was so-so, but, he needs his receivers to help him out - the routes have to be crisper and the hands more reliable. Rhythm, rhythm, rhythm.

The backs were serviceable, but decent enough. It will be nice to get IKM back. The TEs remain our strength, but Fant's supposed focus during the off-season on improving his run-blocking isn't paying dividends.

The offensive line remains a bit of a mess. Others may disagree and that's fine, but, Render just isn't good. Along with the guards, he gets pushed back too easily in zone plays and relies on assistance in pass-pro. Really, the whole unit needs to understand that the zone scheme isn't just getting in the way of the defender - YOU ACTUALLY HAVE TO GET PUSH. Render and the guards routinely get pushed back 1-2 yards as soon as they come out of their stances. This is what teams learned last season: As soon as Iowa zone blocks, attack the LOS and push them back and/or shoot the gaps, disrupting the scheme. It works, and you can bet that Wisconsin will continue to do it. Jackson and Wirfs both had poor moments as well, but, I'll give them a pass since it was their first games. Wirfs completely whiffed (and I mean completely) on one play. That can't happen. Overall, I remain quite skeptical that Polasek is much of a coach.

The DEs were solid. Eppy was disruptive and he's starting to realize how to play freely without losing your gap assignments. The DTs remain a concern, IMO. M. Nelson has limitations athletically, but he's sound overall. Brincks got dominated at times but hustles. Lattimore remains one of the more disappointing players on the roster, IMO. He got man-handled at times. He lacks pad level and strength, and isn't athletic enough to recover. The potential is there, but he's on the clock. It will be interesting to see how the DTs fare against Wisconsin.

The LBs were solid. As far as I'm concerned, Colbert has earned a starting spot. He's both assignment sure and athletic.

The DBs were okay. There were times that I thought Hankins could have drove on the ball. He's still tentative but that should come with time. Ojemudia is playing better than last season, but he will struggle against faster, more athletic WRs. Hooker is a beast.
