Revisiting The Fake FG Play

My first reaction when I saw Iowa line up in that 3-stooges formation is why didn't OSU call timeout?
Watching it my first thought was "WTF is this" and then "Iowa? Surely Iowa is not running a fake field goal. They are going to hard count into a timeout or something" so maybe that's what OSU thought?

Of all the plays, I think Stanley's touchdown pass with Hubbard wrapped around his leg as my favorite of the day. It was the epitome of Iowa's attitude that day. GET THE EFF OUT OF MY WAY OSU, YOU CANNOT STOP US.

Mine too. That play said and showed a lot.

A football team can have 10 players on the LOS and just a qb to take the snap. A football team cannot have more than 4 players lined up in the backfield/at least one yard off the LOS. When you hear the penalty for illegal formation for too many players in the backfield it is usually a wideout, TE, or tackle who is a 1/2 yard too far back from a neutral LOS position. Remember the call against Iowa in the Alamo Bowl against Texas.

If you have a really good running QB and RB you could have 9 on the LOS and let the runners just zone read and option looking for soft spots in the LOS.

Thanks 82. Yes, more to do with how many and where they line up in backfield more than anything.

It was very evident to me that this guy has a lot more football knowledge than I do. What really impressed me was the detail he included about the route the center needed to take.

I'm not completely sure that Kluver took as much of a curved route that he illustrated, but I got the point he was trying to make which is sensible. The explanation of who could be eligible was interesting. Him pointing out the 4 that are classified as in the backfield was helpful. I didn't realize the "line" can be extending from sideline to sideline. I guess I forgot that and what was messing me up was how far out they were lining up.

Iowa moved/positioned everyone then put the man in motion so the D would key on who they thought were key players to cover, which turned out some were not eligible which was interesting. So, this left a space for Kluver and he had the one defender to his left to beat, and that guy was kind of first concentrating on the first guy to the outside until he saw Kluver go downfield. Brilliant play.

Maybe some of you should pick up the rule book and learn a thing or trillion
Or sit next to me for a few games. I had to explain at the game that there were enough guys lined up on the left to make Kluver eligible as the man on the end of the line bince everyone to the right was in the backfield.

We all luv the know-it-alls. Wish I knew everything about everything like you.

Not everyone is going to know the intricacies of that formation or play. I saw a similar thread on the OSU board so thought I'd start one here for some simple football discussion about a unique play that the Iowa coaches weren't afraid to call.

So if it makes you feel bigger and better about yourself telling people what they need to do, go for it I guess. I'm guessing you have a little red sports car in your garage.

These guys are pretty entertaining. The trick play comes up at about the 8:50 mark. They're comparing Stanley to Roethlisburger and Wentz on the next play. They are completely new to Iowa football.

Ok. About the formation, isn't a team supposed to have so many (like 5 or something) on the line of scrimmage? How do they get away with having so many lined outside and random players lined up in the middle? I thought you had to have so many on the line so far apart from each other.

As far as "so far apart from each other", the spacing doesn't matter. Usually field goal linement have their feet either right next to or overlapping the player next to them. But some offenses have wide gaps in the line, sometimes up to a yard or two. As long as 7 players on lined up on the line of scrimmage, it doesn't really matter where in relationship to the ball, there is no penalty.

This play cracks me up. First, our 5 star DE goes in motion the length of the field. Then the punter takes a direct snap from the 20 yard line and people call it a fake FG, even though everybody knows no way we're kicking a FG. If we were going for the FG where's the kicker and why not just kick it? Works every time lol.

Maybe to drop-kick it? (a la Nile Kinnick?)

Apparently they played the game in Des Moines. Shut it off after that.

Yes, he apologized for that. It's just for entertainment purposes only. These guys aren't Iowa fans and they were watching this game by request. This game just got a ton of attention. These guys were commenting how lit up the crowd was and they wanted to be there. Even Colin Cowherd said Kinnick is turning into one of the best atmospheres in all of college football.

This is a football forum. I would expect at least most people to understand ONE OF THE most basic rules usually? Maybe that's too much to expect from the world these days.

It doesn't make me feel bigger. I just expect better, and is that such a bad thing? You are constantly a disappointment around here, you're friends and family must be proud.

Chris Myers stated on his show "Kinnick stadium is a beeeeeotch to play in for an opposing team".

It was a thread to simply stimulate conversation.

F off.

Really? Provide proof or examples please. I generally feel most respect me on here and respect my thoughts, even though not always agreeing with them. You don't have any proof to what you just stated above, but for some reason feel the need to knock someone down to build yourself up. Pathetic quite frankly. To each his own.
