Reverse play

I'd love to see a fake iso/blast from the i formation off tackle and a quick flip to a flanker reversing field behind the action. It could have been huge a few times on Saturday based off of weak side pursuit recognizing our obvious off tackle stretch runs. Fs/ss sell out when stretch runs away. They know we are running a slow developing 80% of the time zone read play.

The flanker direct handoff play we run try to get to the edge quick is not a good misdirection play. I WAS impressed with the timing of the screen vs Illinois state.so progress..but...the way we run the zone read play we MUST have a bether counter play to it other than a bootleg

Maybe they put it in because its known. And when we show JP out there they gotta stop and think. I have to think they've got other things in mind for that formation / personnel set.

But - wow what a departure for KF to run that so deep in his own territory?

Jet sweep = good when executed well. Against ISU it was not.
It will give LBs pause when JP is on the field. But it won't be nearly as effective as it was last year until JP catches a pass or four.

I don't disagree that the jet sweep has benefits..excellent points gesterhawk...just need the change of direction reverse to defeat overpursuit so we can make predictable a weapon lol

The late and GREAT ed thomas...coach of many great hawks...was a master at popping a flanker reverse at you. Anyone who ever played or coached against A/P can attest to that! Genius in the timing which is key. A/P ran a handful of plays left and right so you'd want to load the box or cheat from the weak side then bam! 6!

Just like novacaine...wait...coach boone. Sunshine...cjb....i like it!

I wonder if KF is setting things up to start throwing the kicker out on the field on offense as a decoy. Could be a long term strategy for all the fake field goals.

Outstanding! Don't give anyone any ideas! For a kicker though...that last one before half was an all big ten effort..hope our backup is ready to go lol

It looked like if he would of cut up the field sooner there was a opening to make some yards. Looks like a work in progress.

JP would run backwards and get tackled for a 25 yard loss on the play.

The best was the postgame...the lead blocker's dad, (as a post game paid analyst) on the fake punt said it might have gone if his son could have hooked his man a little more to the inside.

I agree that a well timed counter off of our bread and butter plays would be great to pop now and then. That said I have a lot less gripes about the play calling this year. Davis has changed it up this year. Would he have even called that play last year on 3rd and 21 from his own 5 yard line CJ threw to Vandeberg? Forget how perfect of a throw that was for a sec and just think about the fact that play was called. I figured qb draw, screen or something pretty darn conservative. Compared to the last few years I'm more happy then not with the play calling. Not to mention results.

I agree! I guess more trust in cjb than rudock...and the fact that "well boys we gotta try something or we're all outta here" is coming to the surface lol

I totally forgot... If a play is poorly executed once we should throw it out of the playbook. Never mind the fact that the play resulted in our biggest rushing play of all last season.

I could see Parker running that.

Iowa State is always selling out 110% to the hawks first movement direction. the clowns have been doing this for years with blitzes also because they know they cant hold the hawks with a 6-7 man front.

But I have been highly critical of the hawk coaches for not having enough misdirection and counter plays against teams like clowns and jNW who play blitz heavy in the box defense against us.

Playing and coaching for a coach much in the same make of ferentz..traditional...conservative...old school if you will....but won a state championship and avg 8 hs wins a year over 25 years....other teams would yell out the play thar was coming and his thought was ok you still have to stop it because we try to perfect what we do. Now, rivals did much better against us...until he gave in to 10% wrinkles that didn't risk the ball touching the ground. One play was the jet sweep. The other an i formation toss sweep reverse. In the end it's not so much the play as when you use it...2nd and 10, etc...when you least expect it. Or 1st and 10 after 3 straight blasts off tackle or 3 consecutive series of off tackle on 1st down..or even better when your spotter in the tower or press box catches ss or fs or DE crashing or cheating a couple plays in a row. Then the next time you would have run off tackle blast...3rd and 2..wham! 1st and 10..wham!

YES PLZ. I miss them. KOK was good for 2 a game. Inexplicably, they would usually work. Even some crazy ones by the opponents goal line. Remember seeing one for a short TD right in front of me. Couldn't believe we ran it. Neither could the opponent.

I think we should fake the jet sweep to Parker. We could have CJB keep it and run the other way for a big gain. The right side of the field was wide open on the failed jet sweep vs ISU because the entire defense pursued Parker.

There's nothing wrong with the play at all. I'd just rather someone without a tendency to make dumb mistakes run the ball.
