Results of the Three Most Painful Losses of KF Era

I still think the 2002 loss to ISU is painful only in hindsight because it stood between Iowa and a perfect season. But being that the loss was so early in the year it's hard to imagine that at the time, many felt it would be such a damaging loss. There is no way to predict, had Iowa won that game, what Iowa would have done going forward.

Disagree, i was there, and it was top 3 IMO.

I know it did not get many votes, but I had to vote for the ASU loss.

I was at the game and I haven't felt that low too many times. The ASU fans were the most obnoxious, rude people I have ever encountered, and I still hate ASU to this day.

I voted for the 3 that inevitably "won"..

But, I also remember that game at Arizona (Regular, not State) being a tough very late night pill to swallow.. especially after they had worked you down the peaks and valleys of the roller coaster.. and we had the lead again..

Supposedly the Arizona fans made the ASU fans seem like the welcome wagon.

No we didnt. PAT was blocked that would have given the Hawks the lead. Game ended 34-27.

I still think if that PAT goes through, the Hawks somehow get a stop and win that game.

You are right, my fault.

EDIT: Either way, that was the beginning of several depressing Sundays (and Saturday evenings) for my fall of 2010..

If you are going to go by most painful at the time of the actual game, the 05'-06' loss by Iowa to ISU is probably more impactful. The Iowa team was coming off the miracle play to beat LSU the previous year, and was a top 10 team at the time. They were supposed to crush ISU in that game, and were instead pretty much decimated by turnovers in a lopsided contest. But because the whole season was such a disappointment, that game's impact is often softened by the overall dismal performance of Tate and that team as a whole. But at the time, all Hawk fans were on suicide watch.

Once again, as I said yesterday in response to another Iowa State fan commenting about this, Tate's play in 2005 was the least of that Hawkeye's teams problems.

He put up better numbers in 2005 than he did the year before when he led the Hawks to a shared Big 10 Title. The lack of a formidable defensive line was the main reason the Hawks struggled that year. That was one of KOK's more productive offensive units, statistically speaking.

I knew we were in trouble that Arizona game when ESPN was 10 mins late switching to it....by the time the game popped on the Hawks were already down what, 10?

And another one I just thought of was 05 Michigan....I think that was the game that ended the "Streak" at Kinnick...overtime, phantom PI calls....I've never seen 70000 people so quiet as that day exiting Kinnick. It was like a funeral.

I watched the beginning on ESPN3 and we were down 14-0 right away. Blocked punt inside our own 20 that set up a TD and then a pick six off a slant that bounced right off of McNutt's hands.

Arizona later took a kickoff to the house so it is fair to say that the defense was only responsible for giving up 13 points that night because I wouldnt lay the blame on them for giving up the first TD as Arizona took over deep in the Hawks territory.

I think you are probably right. Tate was often playing from behind and had to make plays with his arm to keep the Hawks going. The Hawkeyes fans and the media fell into the trap of expecting greatness because the program poster boys(QB, WR, RB) were accomplished and experienced, but the lunchpail guys were not.

The 2002 ISU loss damaged me (sports wise) for a couple of weeks. Even taking out the possible title shot that could have come later that year, it was a hyped up game, probably as hyped up Iowa vs Iowa State as there had been in a long time as both teams were ranked going in.

Iowa was dominating and blew a lead that they should have held on to on late afternoon/primetime TV at home. If there is a loss that sticks out in my mind as the worst Iowa loss I've experienced (in football) it's that one. The only ones that come close are the two losses in 2009, actually, they were probably worse to me.

That one just ****** me off. We were robbed in that one.

I chose '02 ISU as that just hurt to watch and feel Kinnick just go silent. Then '05 ISU. The hype for that team and watching Tate go out early and the offense go anemic remind me of my 3rd choice the '09 NW game. (those are not in order of hurt)

Bad calls, no question, but there were some bad calls the other way as well. What sticks out to me most in that game is the conservative pack it in mentality. We drive all the way up the field and try to settle for a FG and overtime when we had the momentum on the drive to play for the win. The shovel pass was a terrible call too. There is a fair amount of play calling and clock management that fell squarely on our side in that game.
