Remember when....

We used to watch games like tomorrow with eyes wide open and optimistic anticipation abound, and not like when you saw your first horror movie at age 10....through the fingers of your hands. Remember watching Iowa regularly beat Wisconsin, Michigan St.....remember Iowa hanging half a hundred or more on Indiana, and Northwestern....remember Iowa almost ALWAYS winning the games they were favored in.....remember Iowa being on equal footing going into games with both Michigan and Ohio St.....remember Iowa regularly getting sacks, and being exciting as hell on offense...no, me either.....been too long ago.

So WHY are we so willing to accept the fact NOW that we are just little Iowa when during the 80's and a good part of the 90's we were on equal footing with Ohio St. and Michigan....and gave Ohio St. one of their worst home losses ever...at least, I think it may have been at the time.

Jon seems to be a good guy, and follows Iowa sports 100x closer than I do....but I have been more than observant enough over the last 10 years to tell you with certainty that "next level" talent is NOT F'n on the way. Iowa football CAN be sexy....every game does NOT have to be coached to try and win at the buzzer. This shit that Ferments has thrown out on the field for close to a decade now has got to stop...this is NOT the way it has to be because we are Iowa. That is bullshit folks, and is a total losers mentality fed to you by the snake oils salesman with the gum, notepad, and toilet paper manufactured by the Federal Reserve.

The world has caught up for all the little fishes. Everyone is on tv and getting exposure. Football 24/7. Northwestern is not the Northwestern of the 80s. Lots of teams like that. How many national titles did Fry win? Sometimes I think we look back at history and see it much better than reality. Not knocking Fry at all, but if Iowa was able to elevate itself what was stopping other teams from doing the same? More than a few coaches and ADs have said they looked at Iowa as the model to build upon and Fry spun off a bunch of future coaches.

Can't disagree with anything you said playmaker. I think Iowa is about the only school with the facilities and resources we have that would put up with this. I don't see it changing either, unless the Ferentz clan moves on. If KF was serious about having an offense, he would have never pulled the shit he did hiring his own son with no experience. He would have gone out and found a proven OC. This staff has proven over and over again that they cannot recruit well enough. KF has pounded 'We are just Iowa', underdog, bullshit into everyone's heads for so long that we have become that. Iowa is seen as a boring brand on the football field. I see full well why talented players would choose another school over Iowa. Very sad. I do believe the class we have coming in is ranked near the bottom of the conference. Just unacceptable any way you look at it.

OK4P. Is that you?

No. During the period of my recollection we have only won at Columbus twice. Once after the shooting when we wore the black helmets and once on the Marv Cook TD that I posted the other day. Neither were big losses for OSU. We did hang what was at the time the worst home loss on Michigan in the modern era back in 2002, but RichRod sunk that program faster than a depth charge so that doesn't stand any longer and that game was coached by Kurt with Mr. O'Keefe's dominant offense. My troll posts do not contain factual inaccuracies such as the one in the OP, so please refrain from using my name in such a manner.

I think I blacked out after falling down some stairs and hitting my head. Now I can't remember the classic 2006 ABC Prime Time night game between Drew Tate and the Hawks and the #1 ranked Buckeyes of Ohio State University.

But I do remember the lead up into the game where everyone thought the Hawks had a chance because KF had been friends with Teddy Ginn's dad a couple years earlier and Troy Smith was one of those productive college quarterbacks who couldn't win the big game.

LOL. That's funny. What proven OC is going to want to languish in Iowa City under Ferentz other than Ken O'Keefe, whose track record is far superior to the clown running the offense now? Hiring an OC at Iowa has to be like hiring management at Sears - you'd have to be really desperate to take the job.

I met Chris Fowler that night in the elevator at the Sheraton. He is a lying POS. He said Iowa had a good team. If I recall correctly, we beat Purdue the next week and then proceeded to lose out.

Playmaker, I was sure this was gonna be about your Dodgers.

"Remember in the 80's when the Dodgers won the World Series?"

What did yu think of the wimpy way their season ended?

Plz stay on topic. If you mention "Dodgers" on this board, it must be in relation to the Fort Dodge Dodgers, not some scrub baseball team. We need a new QB - anyone know if Fort Dodge is churning out any Randy Reiners caliber players? That guy would be dominant with this offense.

Iowa was solid, but not great in the 1990's. There was one 10 win season and one 9 win season. The won 62% of their games if you take out 1998 and 1999 which is about where Iowa typically is in a 10 year stretch. While the early/mid 80's were certainly a bit of a hey day for the Hawkeyes (winning 72% of games from 1981-1987), teams like Wisconsin, NW, and MSU are much better year to year now than they were in 80's and 90's. Times have changed. If Hawks fans are worried about how life was with Hayden during the 80's, they are really no better than Huskers fans that keep bringing up the 90's.

Also, we've never in the last 30 years been on equal footing with Ohio State at least as far as the match up between the two teams in concerned. Since 1980, we are 4-18-1 vs the Buckeyes. The best stretch Iowa has had vs Ohio State was from 83-91 when Iowa went 3-5-1. Against Michigan, Iowa is a little better at 11-16-1 since 1980. From 81-85, the Hawks did win 3 of 5 games and did go 4-5-1 from 1980-1990, but the Wolverines won ever game from 1991-2001.

While I agree that the offense is....well, offensive at times, I don't look at this game as a horror movie to be played. What will the play calling be like? (Unpredictable..I hope) Will we hold onto the ball this time around? ( Please!! ) Will it be wide open and exciting? ( Probably not.) Will it be dull and unimaginative? Again, probably not. (But better chance of that than the first option) My guess is that we will see some things we've seen all too many times before, and some new wrinkles that they want to try for this game, and I have a feeling in my gut that this could be one of those games we remember for a very long time. Of course, that could be from the chili I had for lunch. Either way... GO HAWKEYES!

I could be wrong, but I believe we have beaten OSU three times since Hayden Fry became Iowa’s head coach.

All time iowa is 14W 46L 3T vs Ohio st. Playing them has been similar to watching a horror film. We've gotten close the last few times though.

But only twice in Columbus, 1987 and 1991. The other victory against Ohio State under coach Fry was in 1983, and that was in Iowa City, 20-14.

3 wins under Hayden, however, one of those was at Kinnick. The OP said "and give Ohio St. one of their worst home losses ever" - we won two close games at OSU. My response was limited to games in Columbus.

-------What did yu think of the wimpy way their season ended?

Haha...yu.....I get it. It f'n gutted me....that's what I think. I had no time to prepare for the loss, like I do with Iowa Football all off season. There was a football tie, to stay "on topic"

I can't believe that I'm about to use this team as a barometer, but what will be very telling is how well we do on offense compared to what Indiana did for two (2) quarters early this season....I'm betting that we look scared as hell, versus the way they threw everything they had at the big gorilla during the first half. Funny how you can recruit nice skill position receivers to a powerhouse like Indiana, when you run an appealing offense.
