Remember when....

okeefe - Got the blowout we put on them at home, mixed up with the All Black Helmet game in Columbus...you are correct.

We used to watch games like tomorrow with eyes wide open and optimistic anticipation abound, and not like when you saw your first horror movie at age 10....through the fingers of your hands. Remember watching Iowa regularly beat Wisconsin, Michigan St.....remember Iowa hanging half a hundred or more on Indiana, and Northwestern....remember Iowa almost ALWAYS winning the games they were favored in.....remember Iowa being on equal footing going into games with both Michigan and Ohio St.....remember Iowa regularly getting sacks, and being exciting as hell on offense...no, me either.....been too long ago.

So WHY are we so willing to accept the fact NOW that we are just little Iowa when during the 80's and a good part of the 90's we were on equal footing with Ohio St. and Michigan....and gave Ohio St. one of their worst home losses ever...at least, I think it may have been at the time.

Jon seems to be a good guy, and follows Iowa sports 100x closer than I do....but I have been more than observant enough over the last 10 years to tell you with certainty that "next level" talent is NOT F'n on the way. Iowa football CAN be sexy....every game does NOT have to be coached to try and win at the buzzer. This shit that Ferments has thrown out on the field for close to a decade now has got to stop...this is NOT the way it has to be because we are Iowa. That is bullshit folks, and is a total losers mentality fed to you by the snake oils salesman with the gum, notepad, and toilet paper manufactured by the Federal Reserve.

Because when you realize Santa Claus.......well, things just change.

Iowa was solid, but not great in the 1990's. There was one 10 win season and one 9 win season. The won 62% of their games if you take out 1998 and 1999 which is about where Iowa typically is in a 10 year stretch. While the early/mid 80's were certainly a bit of a hey day for the Hawkeyes (winning 72% of games from 1981-1987), teams like Wisconsin, NW, and MSU are much better year to year now than they were in 80's and 90's. Times have changed. If Hawks fans are worried about how life was with Hayden during the 80's, they are really no better than Huskers fans that keep bringing up the 90's.

Also, we've never in the last 30 years been on equal footing with Ohio State at least as far as the match up between the two teams in concerned. Since 1980, we are 4-18-1 vs the Buckeyes. The best stretch Iowa has had vs Ohio State was from 83-91 when Iowa went 3-5-1. Against Michigan, Iowa is a little better at 11-16-1 since 1980. From 81-85, the Hawks did win 3 of 5 games and did go 4-5-1 from 1980-1990, but the Wolverines won ever game from 1991-2001.
OSU is almost always a guaranteed loss.

Kirk has had 20 years to desensitize expectations for the majority of Iowa fans...7-5 or 6-6 is now an outstanding year...worthy of a bonus and another "bowl"

Kirk knows how to scratch where it itches...and take some coin to the bank...

And don't forget, getting to a bowl is a big accomplishment...only 120 teams accomplish that a year.

Iowa was NEVER on "equal footing" with Michigan and O$U in the 80s and 90s. There were years we beat one of them. There has been--MAYbe--one year where we were actually picked to finish higher than BOTH by Big 10/Big Ten pundits.

We haven't beaten both in the same season since 1962. Just goes to show how irrational folks can be...

Per ESPN last year we are the #25 football program of all time. Ohio State is #1. Nebraska 9, Michigan 7, Penn State 12. We have strong tradition but not to the level of these iconic programs. Hawks have beaten all these teams recently - time to knock off the Buckeyes.

I liked the year we got trucked by Western Michigan on Senior Day at home. Finished 6-6. Next season, the "X consecutive bowl games" turned into "Bowl eligible in the last Y years" on the PA system. Man, the more I think about it, the more I realize that if Kurt was a MAC coach and had to go up against other MAC coaches with more or less even talent every year and had to serve as a Big Ten rent-a-victim twice a year to fund the program, the guy would probably have about a .300 career winning percentage. Sad.

It will take a miracle...

Not that it means much, but I shall be at the game with my buddy who I go to one or two games a year with. We have a perfect record in football games, including two victories over Michigan teams that should have killed us and the Pitt miracle comeback that O'Keefe orchestrated. Also attended the Nebraska game in 2015 in Lincoln and 2009 MSU game with this guy on the road. We've definitely witnessed some miracles and he is guaranteeing an Iowa victory tomorrow, but I see no way our perfect record stays intact.

One thing that totally gets lost in this is how many seasons do we get to even talk about us being ranked, and then debate what our rank is, or should be? For years and years we were always in the Top 25 starting the season...pretty much regardless of the year before....now we have to pretty much start out 4-0 to even sniff the Top25. Iowa has ZERO respect under Ferments. The top programs can lose a game and pop right back into the Top 5 or 6 in no time flat....I submit that in 2015, had we lost game 10, we probably would have fallen out of the Top 10....which in retrospect given the Stanford game, would have been deserved.

-------- Pitt miracle

Think Alabama would refer to a comeback over Kentucky as a miracle? That is what I equate Pitt to....and why Iowa Football has become a total joke. Comebacks over the likes of Pitt are games that if you were a real program, you wouldn't even want to recognize. Again, Pitt miracle?

Well, just wanted to bump this. My perfect record with this dude stays intact. The dude was spot on. Dude wears hawkeye colored glasses, but he called this game. Didn't think it would be that big of a beatdown, but was pretty confident we would win by multiple scores. He claimed that if we got OSU down, they would self destruct, and boy was he right. Of course, on the drive over, he was also making contingency plans to leave at halftime if Iowa had fewer than 100 yards of offense and was down by 3+ scores, so he was grounded somewhat.

Nah, no point. This season is already a turd in the punch bowl and I don't want to waste mojo or sit in that cold. I've watched long enough to know that this team can go 6-7 or 10-3 at this point, with 7-6 or 8-5 most likely. But if we win this weekend, I think we'll salvage 10 wins.
