Remember when 'experts' said Iowa has guard problem?

Earlier, this year, perhaps after the CyClown defeat at Carver, the 'experts' said
Iowa was being hurt by 'guard play'.

Could not have been further from the truth, yesterday.

Both Anthony Clemmons and Mike Gesell came to play.

With the exception of Gabe, the rest of the team AND coaches seemed to
give up to Purdue.......a very mediocre team.

Why in the h*** wouldn't the Coaching staff call a Time out, when you have the ball
and need a game tying, or winning score? Come on, man

They probably didn't call a time out because they knew Gesell had been feeling it.

Gesell played a good game and Clemmons was OK but, overall, the guard play hasn't been that great, compared to a lot of other teams.

You must have majored in making yourself look like a complete donkey cause you do it really well.

The guards came to play? There's 4 of them last get a lot of minutes genius. Only two of them had decent games.

So apparently your criteria for not thinking our guard play has been the anchor around this team's neck is that for one game over the course of a 30+ game schedule 50% of them had a good game but Iowa still didn't win.

Keep it coming Einstein.

They do have a guard problem...the guard play is not consistent and I doubt it will be with the personnel Iowa has.

A well coached team doesn't need a timeout in that situation. They've been over it 100 times in practice.

That being said, I don't believe the shot MG took is the one they wanted.

One game does not a theory disprove.
Clemmons, Gesell, Jok, Ogs combined for the following in these games. What they scored and what they gave up, respectively:
Texas - scored 13 pts, 4 assts / gave up 37 pts, 7 ast
Syracuse - scored 14 pts, 12 assts / gave up 21 pts, 12 ast
Iowa St - scored 30 pts, 12 ast / gave up 39 pts, 12 ast
Northern Iowa - scored 16 pts , 5 ast / gave up 28 pts , 4 ast
Mich St - scored 18 pts, 7 ast / gave up 47 pts, 12 asts
Wisconsin - scored 18 pts, 5 ast / gave up 24 pts, 6 ast
Purdue - Scored 35 pts, 7 ast / gave up 26 pts, 9 ast.

In 1 loss on the season, our guards outplayed the opposing team's guards (Purdue). I think I see a pattern here and it doesn't support your post.
Our guards avg 5.1 PPG and 1,8 apg in those losses.
Opposing guards avg 7.9 ppg and 2.21 apg

Overall, the guards are still our biggest problem. However, it's a team game and you can look at every single player with things they need to improve on.

It wouldn't be such a glaring issue if they would feed the ball into our bigs as the first option on offense. Most of them cannot even execute a basic entry pass into the post.

If someone says that Iowa's guard play has been good this year, they are either trolling, or don't know **** about basketball.

In the Purdue game, Woody was non-existent, Uthoff 0-5 on 3 pointers, White not on the floor and
Gabe, yeah Gabe did just fine.

Someone needs to help Mike Gesell. The guy almost single handedly beat Purdon't.

And Fran's 'Great' Strategy of NOT having a strategy DID NOT work, so it's horrible.
Call a friggin Time out and support your players. Holy ****

Ironically of all the timeouts Fran uses it is when Gessell pulls up to hit a 3 to tie. Ugh...

While I agree with you, the only one who can throw an entry pass to the post with any consistency is Ogs. The rest don't even bother to move to a spot that allows the proper spacing and angle to feed the post.

It's just brutal, isn't it? I'd love to be able to sit in one film session and go through each half court possession with them. Maybe they can explain it to me or I could explain it to them.

I feel like everyone else in college BB has turned away from the motion, because it clogs up the lane so much, that it leave very little room for players to attack the rim, as there is too many player near the rim that can sag and play help defense. It isn't just the passing to the post that is lacking, it is the players coming off screens at 19' and taking that 2 point jump shot, instead of coming off them at the 3 point line, and making that low % shot at least worth 3 points instead of 2.

I would like to see Iowa transition to a different offense after this year. Look at how easily even a Mike G got to the rim when Iowa spaced the floor (4 out) and left Woody at the free throw line to screen up for MG at the 3 pt. line vs Purdue. He easily got to the rim about 4 or 5 possessions in a row and either got a bucket or a foul. They ditched the motion for those possessions and made it look easy.

The motion offense would look a lot easier if we had good 3 pt shooters. The lane would get a lot less clogged. The spacing for the entry pass is one of the problems. Recognizing an obvious mismatch is another problem we have. If I have to watch our Guards ignore a 6'9 Uthoff posted up on a 6'1 guard, I'll lose my big screen tv.
