I didn't follow Iowa back then, but I remember they were happless. Someone told me that Bob Cummins son was the QB and the fans were irrate with the decision that he should be the starter. One game he was injuried and the fans cheers. It was a dark day. Poor kid.
My dad assured me in no uncertain terms while it was happening that 1985 was going to be the absolute high water mark for Iowa football in my lifetime. He flunked out of Iowa in the '70's so he's a pretty smart guy. I don't know that he was wrong in his prediction. The 2002 and 2009 teams were special, but the 2002 team lost to Iowa freaking State and laid the ultimate wet fart against a PAC 10 team in a bowl game. 2009 was great, but was plagued by the same problem the '85 team had in that it lost at Ohio, and who can forget the Northwestern loss the week prior?
Anyway, my dad said that the '70's were so bad that had they not lucked into Hayden Fry the program would likely be Indiana level or worse right now. At this point I just hope we can make the transfer portal neutral for us and not a totally losing proposition, but I ain't gonna lie, I'm pretty worried. If I were a college dude with a modicum of football talent on offense I really don't know if I would want to play at Iowa other than possibly on the line or fullback.
Man, we are going to be the Pittsburgh Pirates selling every year at the trade deadline. We will be that Class AAA team developing players for the blue bloods. That sucks!
The offense would not be worse today if Fry hadn't have come. I was there in ‘73 for the 0-11 season.
So I do know bad when I see it.
This years Iowa team is bad.
As a side note…I was there in ‘73 for the 0-11 season.
So I do know bad when I see it.
This years Iowa offense is that bad.
His claim is well founded in the reality of the times. Were you a student? My old man said that anyone who claims to remember any part of 1973 after the draft ended is full of shit.
Then I must be full of shit because I distinctly remember at least a few parts of '73. Maybe. Or was that '74??Were you a student? My old man said that anyone who claims to remember any part of 1973 after the draft ended is full of shit.
I was eight. I remember rushing home after school to watch Felix The Cat at 3 and Doctor Max at 3:30 and having them continually pre-empted by Watergate coverage. I was freaking crushed. Were you a student? My old man said that anyone who claims to remember any part of 1973 after the draft ended is full of shit.
Yes, Commings kept trying to insert his son into the starting QB position. He was not good. And there were better QB's on the team. Even Commings realized it wasnt working out and finally played the other QB's.I didn't follow Iowa back then, but I remember they were happless. I remember the 70's, arrived at Iowa as a Freshman in 1975. Football was a joke, then this guy Fry took over. Had us in the Rose Bowl by year 3. I remember that year, we beat UCLA and Nebraska in non-conference and it was almost surreal. I believe it was our first winning season in like 20 years........
