People have asked me about Daviyon Nixon. So, I asked Hawkeye D-Line coach Reese Morgan about him today. You'll like what he said. Plus, he talks AJ Epenesa's growth & development of true freshmen:

How old is Reece? He looks like he's getting up there in years. I've known him since he was coaching at Iowa City West.

Nixon didn’t play this year due to academics. Assuming that semester will be over by the time of our bowl game and the 4 game redshirt rule, why can’t he play a few series in the bowl game?

Good point. Let's get the big fella out there and see what he can do.

Well...if it all starts up front and we all know it does...this was the best interview I've heard in a long time. I'll be surprised if Anthony Nelson leaves, and hope Hooker stays too, but damn...our defensive line is going to be loaded next year. You could have 8 legitimate starters on the front defensive line. AJ, A. Nelson, Golston, Lattimore, Reiff, Nixon, Linderbaum, and Shannon. Wagner may be another year away, but damn...he was a highly rated guy. The recruiting along the line is pretty damn impressive.

You throw in more experienced LBs, a more diverse defensive approach with 5 DBs, and you are going to have a team that is going to be scary against the run and pass. We were good this year...we will much bigger and likely much better against the run next year. We've already proven we can get to the QB with four.

And combine that up-front scariness with one of our best back 4 ever. I really think Hankins and Brents could become the best coverage DUO Iowa has had in I don't know how long. We have had lots of good corners (most recently Jackson, King, and Hyde), but I think the 2 we have now BOTH have the ability to reach that level. If Hooker comes back, that is 2 all-conference S returning. You throw in Ojemudia/Merriweather/Craddieth/Belton/Castro into the S/Star mix, and Moss/Johnson/Roberts into the backup CB mix, and I think there is a lot to be excited about.

So I’ll ask again. Is there any reason why Nixon can’t at the very least suit up for the bowl game?

Would be a good question for an Iowa sports reporter to ask. Academics shouldn’t be an issue post finals. I would think prepping for a game would be a good thing for him overall.

Morgan has been a Godsend for KF... He's been his key to recruiting within the state pretty much. Having been a long time HS coach here he just knows everybody pretty much. Between all the HS coaches and ADs he just knows all the main ones and having that 'in' is huge. Plus the guy knows football inside out and players seem to love him.
