Redshirting?

Happy Easter everyone

Any chance White, Josh O, or even Marble may red-shirt to allow them to get more physically mature? If Fran signs one more recruit we will have a ton of depth and it would help these three to get physically stronger.

Barring injury I would say zero percent chance

To play the style Fran wants to play we need the depth

All three offer something we need. JO - shooting, AW - size, DM - athleticism and we're still going to need some PG out of him. Combined they offer depth at numerous positions. Plus, I hope they're too talented and good to RS.

If Iowa had more quality upperclassmen, yes, but these guys are all needed to play. All the young players will be keys at some point during the season. It isn't possible when all your scholarships aren't filled.

When's the last time we had a full roster with legit s'ship players? Better ? yet, when has there been a spring we're not scrambling to fill our roster and/or hoping to find a key component or two? With all of this it would be great to have a spring come and go without a key player or two gettin' outta town.

Agree but how much depth does Fran need? more than 10 bodies?

If he adds one more impact player this spring and hopefully no one gets hurt, I hope White, Marble, and Josh get more than 4-6 minutes a game. What if they red shirted May and let him spend a full yr on just his BB skills and tehn turned him loose his last 2 yrs.

top ten for next season

cartwright
baasbe
gatens
hubbard
brommer
archie
2nd recruit this spring
may
Josh
White
Marble

that is 11, not saying Fran should just wondering if it might benefit one of those players and the team in the long run.

Top 10 - in terms of overall impact to team not necessarily (but usually) talent

Basabe
Cartwright
Hubbard
Gatens
White
Marble
McCabe
Brommer
Oglesby
Archie

Eric May has a crap ton of potential. No way am I giving up on him. He was shooting almost 50% from the 3 at a point this season. He was Iowa's leading scorer until the end of December. THEN he lost some confidence as the scouting tapes showed how the shut him down > guard him to the right, he can't go left...

That said, if May can work on his dribble penetration (especially going left, including the left handed layup) and the pull up jumper, he could get the starting nod again. He is one of the most athletic players on the team.

If he earns the starting position back, which is definitely possible, then the Hawkeyes will be sitting very, very well next season, considering who all he would need to beat out. Here is to May earning that starting nod again! That would be huge for the Hawks!

I have an easy fix for learnin'em on using the non-dominate hand that is surely to work. Tie a short string from his balls to his right hand. May would figure out quickly how to go left and it is sure as $hit to work. Problem solved. Trust me.

Happy Easter!

I don't think anyone will redshirt. We are a Cartwright injury away from big trouble at the point. I think not only do we need everyone but we need another point.

I hope you're right about May because I really enjoy watching him when he's on. The problem is, as you pointed out, the kid can't go to his left and he has zero confidence. He is a look to pass type player rather than a look to shoot. He is a good athletic defender and can jump through the roof. He needs to be able to contribute minutes but I just don't see him cracking the starting lineup.

I think it is safe to say there is going to be some serious competition in practice for playing time. Redshirting guys doesn't make sense to me as this team sorely lacks game experience. With new guys being added to the mix, I think it is critical to develop some chemistry and develop the football mindset of "next guy in", as McCaffrey will sit guys for not performing and reward those who are.

That is a great question because the past two coaches never accomplished this. The most recent has an exodus every year and the one prior to that could sign a class, but had to fill in the Spring becuase players didn't qualify.

It has been far too long and I hope those days are over, with Fran at the helm, a lot has changed in one calendar year, so why shouldn't that as well?

Unless the player is an extremely athletic 7 footer who is just a bit raw and your team already has a very formidable front line, red-shirting in college basketball is a bad idea. Players need to be on the court, even if for limited time. With 13 scholarships, you need players to contribute by the time they are sophomores. Otherwise, you are going to be in trouble somewhere. Backing up their freshman year doesn't mean you get another scholarship. It just means one is used up for a additional year.

I think people get confused because of football. In football you have 85 scholarships for 22 positions (let's leave PK and P out for now) that means you can figuratively go 4 deep in every position. In basketball you have 13 scholarships for 5 positions. That means you cannot even go 3 deep. You hope to have 3 guys with some versatility that if need be they might be able to fill a couple of rolls. But if you RS a guy, that means you are down another. It hurt during Archie's RS year and last year with Cully (even though he was originally hurt, it was reported he was running FC at the Field House by the end of the season, so it was also a RS).

It seems like this coaching staff knows how to develop players. As was evident in year one. Whether that was a fluke or for real, time will tell. Assuming they are excellent at player development, and I believe they are, May will improve in the areas needed. That alone will boost his confidence. Couple that with the extra weapons that the Hawkeyes have, and less focus on May being the leading scorer, and he will have more opportunity.

I don't believe May will have the minutes he had up until January, but his productivity per minute will increase significantly. If he improves and developes to his potential.

Remember the Eric May from the beginning of the year? The one that was scoring 11.2 pts(45% fg, 46% 3fg), 1.9 steals, 1.5 assists, 5.6 rebounds? He has that potential. Now that the pressure is off, with the increase in talent, he will be able to relax and continue to develop.

How much will May improve??? We will see in 7 months...

I know people don't like it when I question certain assumptions. So I am sorry, but is there really significant proof that the staff is excellent at developing talent? I think it is a reasonable assumption, but I am not sure any one player's development was all that significant. In fact, some players could have regressed from the beginning of the year and prior years. Gatens and May had both been on the all-frosh team and Gatens was HM last year. Neither had league honors this year. I know people like to point to Archie and Brommer as 2 developed players, but Brommer was by far the most productive and he averaged 3.1 pts and 2.4 R's a game.

Again, I am not saying this staff is bad at developing players, I just wonder if it an absolute given at this point.
