Redshirting?

I know people don't like it when I question certain assumptions. So I am sorry, but is there really significant proof that the staff is excellent at developing talent? I think it is a reasonable assumption, but I am not sure any one player's development was all that significant. In fact, some players could have regressed from the beginning of the year and prior years. Gatens and May had both been on the all-frosh team and Gatens was HM last year. Neither had league honors this year. I know people like to point to Archie and Brommer as 2 developed players, but Brommer was by far the most productive and he averaged 3.1 pts and 2.4 R's a game.

Again, I am not saying this staff is bad at developing players, I just wonder if it an absolute given at this point.

I thought Cartwright and Basabe both made great strides during the year.

Cartwright and Basabe obviously developed. Brommer and Archie were both much better than what they were the year before. Also look at what he did as a head coach elsewhere. He had 3 consecutive Freshman of the year in their respective conference. Also look at the development of Kenny Hasbrouck at Siena.

While I understand what you are saying about his ONE YEAR at Iowa so far. That doesn't mean you can't go back to his time at other teams and see that he has developed some nice talent while being a head coach.

Interestingly enough, I was thinking the same thing the other day (while tearing down the gazebo-in my back yard - lol)... It almost seemed like a 50/50 on those that improved vs. those that didn't. Gatens & May seemed to regress while Carter and Mel improved. At this point, I'm not to sure they improved because of coaching or more due to their experience level... Brommer & Archie both seemed to improve, but that could have been more about limited options and getting exposed to more playing time... that's a tough call to make after just one year.

I agree Fran has done a good job at other programs. But I am not sure if that was about player development or recruiting, or both. I just don't know. As far as Mel's development goes, that guy was schooling people in PTL. He was by far the best of the Iowa players. So, I am not sure how much that was development and not just geeting used to the level of play. Same might be true for Bryce. Really might be an example of recruiting skills.

Again, I just don't see Brommer's 1.5 more points and .9 more rebounds as huge improvement and Archie didn't play last year, so who knows?

As I said, I tend to believe this staff will prove to be good at developing players, but I just think we need a little more data before we can take it as an assumption, like we can about the football staff.

Most college bb players would benefit from a redshirt year, but often programs do not have the luxury.
Jordan Morgan of michigan was injured early on in his frosh year, and was redshirted.
He burst on the scene last year and was really impressive. He and Nix of MSU were both out of Detroit the same year and Nix was higher rated, but to me,Morgan is a lot better right now. He obviously used his redshirt year well.

Wisky redshirts regularly, and it has worked out well for them.
Iowa is not in position to do it yet,but I still think for some players in certain circumstances,it is very helpful. Woodbury probably could utilize an extra year to get stronger and thicker. Jared Reiner could have also used a redshirt year.
Almost all big guys would profit long term from a redshirt year. Otherwise, they are one and one guys.

That really has been a luxury for Wisky. Play a type of basketball that takes a long time to learn, but where your players don't necessarily get tired out. Recruit guys that will be able to play that system, but whom most won't go to the next level and then keep them in the program longer than other teams keep their players in the system.

Would have worked for Lick if he could have kept his players from transferring, don't see it working for Fran's system.

half way thru the yr the Hawks quit playing non-conference and started to play the Big Ten schedule, the Big Ten competition is much stronger, thus it is the true test to see how good players really are. Fran has proven thru the yrs that he develops players, this is not his first coaching job, if he can recruit talent to Iowa we will be just fine in the coaching dept.

To Caar's comment about Gatens and May's regression, others pointed out they saw Cartwright and Basabe improve through out the season. Fran is coming in with a lot of different philophies than Lickliter, sometimes someone who has no experience at all is better fit then someone who was coached under completely different style.

Yeah we didn't run like that much more but the defense and pace was still a lot different which can be some of the explanation for regression.

Congrats to Fran and staff on an outstanding recruiting class, especially after just one yr on the job!

I still find it hard to believe all 12 players will be in the rotation and it would help the 3 incoming freshman to redshirt and get physically stronger, With our lack of post players I doubt Olasani can sit out a yr and develop.

Post players:

Baasbe
Brommer
Olasani
Archie
McCabe
White

Perimeter Players:

Cartwright
Gatens
Hubbard
May
Josh O
Marble

wow! Fran and staff have really overhauled and added a ton of depth to the roster,

This...plus both players did get injured during the season and missed not just game time, but practice time. Expect each player to be better this season, how much, time will tell, but it is doubful they regress.

Yeah, I think both will really progress during this off season. I also think the added athleticism on the roster will help prepare the existing players for the grind of the season.

If you get good enough recruits, for the most part you don't NEED to red shirt them. Wisconsin may be the exception in how they do it. If a guy isn't good enough to contribute in his freshman year then let him get through in four years and get a guy in that will contribute all four years.

That is not a mindset we have seen since the early years of TD. I will say, though, that some of our better players have red shirted over time. Lohaus and Earl are in that group, obviously. Was Winters or someone else from his era?

I just think Fran is going to work the way I just described, though. I hope he does because that means we have real talent coming in every year at every scholarship.

You are right: Wisconsin has had the luxury of depth that we havent, it will be interesting what Fran decides now that he actually has a lot of bodies to work with. The days of Cully Payne a true freshman having to play every second may be over.

Of any of the freshmen, it would seem the most reasonable for Josh to redshirt. Even though Iowa can use a guy to stretch the D. He has Gatens, Marble, and May in front of him. If you call him a swing player, you can add Hubbard and White.
