Here's hoping at a minimum one and hopefully two players are redshirted after tomorrow's exhibition game. Meyer and Ingram will accomplish nothing this year but a.) sit on the bench or b.) potentially take up valuable playing time for players that will clearly be more productive. Especially Meyer given the depth we have at the 4 with White, Basabe, and McCabe. Playing Meyer ahead of either of these 3, unless they are injured, would be ridiculous and counter-productive. We need to ride the horses that we have, not sit them in favor of a 10-11 man rotation.
 


Meyer looks like the most likely, just so many 4's on this team. Ingram would be next as Fran even mentioned he was behind.

If you play uptempo, you really do need a deep rotation, both to keep the legs fresh and to account for the increased number of fouls that normally come with a greater number of possessions. Keeping the legs fresh is especially important when you play uptempo using a squad that at is best moderately athletic compared to other Big Ten schools.
 


I'm guessing Pat Ingram gets little or few minutes early on then as he gets caught up and then he'll play a little more.
 


Meyer will redshirt, IMO. But Ingram does have value to this team, if for nothing else but his defensive ability. I don't know if he'll redshirt or not, but I doubt that it's cut and dry right now.
 


Ingram's defense is a invaluable addition to this team since defense was a problem last year, he may not put up flashy #'s on the stat sheet but the ones that don't show up are just as important..
My guess is that Meyer gets RS'd;)
 


I agree. Meyer redshirt, Ingram few minutes early then grows into his role in the rotation as the non-conf. goes on.
 


Or we could redshirt them and then put them into blow outs at the end of the season?

Meyer is the most likely redshirt. I feel like Ingram's time will depend on how well May plays. As May could be the SG/SF defensive stopper, but if he can't that will become Ingram's role.

If Ingram's playing time is going to depend on how May plays, I don't think he redshirts. That is not a knock on May, it is a compliment to Ingram.

We all know Iowa needs guys that can play defense, but who can also handle the ball and not hinder an offense. There is no evidence that May can do both of those things. I was as high as anyone about Eric his freshman season, but Iowa's younger players are just better, outside of Marble. At the end of last season I posted about two players that I felt were going to be in trouble for playing: May and McCabe, why both have many limitations. For May, it is pretty obvious why, but for McCabe it is he is an undersized tweener and when Basabe had his best games, Iowa won, when McCabe did, Iowa didn't.
Now heading into this season, if McCabe does start to begin the season, I don't see it toward the end and that is simply because I think Marble will slide to the 3 and White to the 4 because I feel that Oglesby is going to breakthrough early this season.
Here is where Ingram cannot redshirt, Iowa needs guards to go in for all those folks. May can backup Marble at the 3 sparringly and then you have Clemmons and Ingram backing up Gesell/Oglesby.
I just can't see White staying at the 3 that long, unless he has really improved defensively. Anyway, that is my two cents on Ingram not going to redshirt. The younger players are just better and ready to play, except Meyer as there is such a logjam at the 4 right now.
If I am wrong, it is okay because talking about who may redshirt and who is going to play more minutes mean the bleeding is completely over and Iowa has depth to go along with a good starting five, something they haven't had since 2006.
When Fran took over Iowa was the worst job in the BIG, oh how times have changed.

No way on God's green earth McCabe loses playing time short of him getting injured. Nobody on the team demonstrates his toughness or "kiss my a$$" attitude that is desperately needed. I also don't see White having problems at the 3. Will there be an adjustment period? Absolutely. He was recruited to play the 3. He'll be more than fine. Oglesby breaking out? I'm not convinced of that. His role is to shoot, shoot, and shoot some more even after missing 7 in a row. Kinda like a closer in baseball. You blow a safe? Who cares. Go get 'em the next night. I'm not so sure Josh has that in his personality. He'll hit some 3s this year no doubt, but, I don't see much beyond that.

Either way we look at it, it's finally here! Basketball season has arrived. GO HAWKEYES!!!

Actually, Oglesby had a solid freshman season and had his ups and downs. I think a year to watch Matt Gatens is going to pay huge dividends in the end.
As far as McCabe, yes there are the good things, but he also fouls a lot and picks up technicals. The fact is Basabe has much more talent and just didn't play to his ability last season, maybe he got the message and White is clearly a better player than Zach. I like McCabe and he can provide a valuable role, but just because he has fire doesn't give him the pass to be on the floor. It is debatable that Olaseni is going to make this huge leap that people think he may have and Woodbury is a freshman. McCabe is a liability on defense which Iowa cannot afford to have time and time again if they want to be a serious contender for the NCAA tournament.
Yes baskeball is here and I am excited and maybe I am over-hyping the younger players like Oglesby, but Iowa hasn't recruited this good for some time and I think a youth movement is not all bad. Outside of Marble, no other Jr./Sr. is safe because of it. Look, Iowa has real depth and competition for minutes, this is not a total knock on McCabe, it is a testament to Iowa's talent and depth.

I dont disagree with you sportstalent. But I think it's gonna take an awful lot for Mr McCabe to lose minutes.

Understood, but no matter his role this season it will be crucial because he does have the type of offensive game that will hopefully provide some mismatches, I just think that it is better served against other teams second units. Iowa is clearly going to have more weapons this season and that could benefit Zach a lot, but I just feel that there are other players on the roster that are difference makers when they play well compared to when Zach has in the past. With Zach Iowa may get more production out of him in a different role than last year. If that is playing the 4 exclusively or eventually coming off the bench, so be it. I still think he is important to Iowa going to the NCAA tournament this season. Every player who returns from last year is going to benefit from having a real PG and some real size, no mismatches for Iowa this season, they can force other teams to matchup to them...not all teams, but most.
 




After watching today, I think they both should red shirt. I also think they both look like they will be absolute studs after a year in the system. They both move really well and have a great center of balance. They each just need to learn the game and the system more.

Next year, the new on court players would be Meyer, Uthoff, Ingram and PJ. Add that group to Woody, MG, and Clemons, and Wow.
