Recruits at Game

Gatens is just not a big time B10 player like he is being asked to be on this team. If he's your number one option, you're really going to struggle. If he had went to a better team, he would be a real nice 4th or 5th option on a much better team. It's too bad he hasn't gotten to play with better talent since he's been here.

No way in hell McCabe starts. I would love to see May come off the bench as the 6th man energizer roll. If Marble can progress and start or If White comes in and can play the 3, that would be huge and be what I would love to see happen.

Don't expect this recruiting class to put anybody on the bench. More likely the players we have improve. We have average players, much like football. Develop them. I like the progress made in the last few weeks. This is not Kentucky.

We need to focus on filling seats in the stands just as much, and there is progress there as long as these kids play hard. They are not giving up.

Archie was lost all last season, had knee problems during the summer into the early part of this season and has been out for the past 2-3 weeks. So, essentially, he has been available to play approximately 1/2 a season since coming to Iowa. The football team moves guys out after 4 years, so why not Archie too? He should be in a position to graduate this June and the Hawks sure could stand to use the scholly on someone who might actually be available to play for a full season. At the rate Archie is going, he may not come off IR the rest of this season.......which is appropriate if he never passes a concussion test. But giving him another year should not be a given or even expected since he has had injury issues since arriving at Iowa and there is no reason to expect anything different in the future.

If Iowa was seriously in on enough quality players, I would go along with this reasoning. But I would hate to see Archie (a project player with size, some experience and potential to help a little) with his one year left be replaced with another project big who is going to offer no immediate upgrade and eat up additional years of scholarships.

Iowa needs upgrades. If we are not looking at upgrades we need patience.

Fran will be bringing in 4 new players as it is this year. Keep Archie on Scholarship, and that way he will cycle out along with Gattens, Brommer, and Cartwright. We then have the ability to sign 4 guys the next year, which hopefully reaps rewards with Fran having a whole year under his belt to recruit, and hopefully show improvement all next year. If we can get a combined 10 pts, and 10 rebounds between Brommer and Archie manning the C position next year, that will be decent production from the C spot.

Unless Fran has an imediate contributor lined up for a third scholly this spring,I tend to agree. He will be a 5th year senior, and athletic,so maybe he helps a little next year, and we would have 4 to give in 2012,which would even out the classes, and give Fran time to line up better recruits.

Keeping Archie allows Iowa to bring in more young players that will be around for more than 2 years, unless they develop quickly and can make the leap, I don't see that happening for some time. Player retention/development has been the major issue for some time at Iowa. It appears that Fran has made a good connection with the players and the relationships are healthy, time will tell, but I think the mass exodus each year is over. It appears that Fran and staff have been able to bring stability, I haven't heard any whispers of players being unhappy, with exception of the record not being where they would like it...anyone?

You are stuck in the Lickliter era. McCaffrey could pull a name out of a hat and find an upgrade over Archie. This is not meant to be a dig on Archie, but his only other offer was Fordham, which should tell you something. A big with no post moves who can't catch and shoots 32% from the free throw line isn't that hard to replace with an upgrade. He has had enough time to graduate, which I believe is all that is owed a juco transfer. No reason to bring him back IMO, as he clearly hasn't worked much on his game based on his free throw shooting.

Who is available right now, that is 1.likely to sign with Iowa this season, 2. but only if that extra scholly becomes available, 3. who is an immediate upgrade signifigant enough to warrant the extra year or 2 scholly?

I'm not saying that player isn't out there, I'm just saying that by the time we get into Archie's scholly we are probably reaching talent wise this year. I don't think we are turning "that guy" away to hold on to Archie.
