Recruiting Class Rewind: Grading 2005

I like most of what you posted. However, I will never understand the infatuation with Tony Moeaki. From the moment I first saw him play looked 'stiff''. I'm not saying he is a stiff. He just always looked like an injury waiting to happen. As I've said before, some of the coaches considered him a China Doll. On top of that his hands were inconsistent. Good luck to him at the next level.

I just hope we have the chance to debate Tony, at the next level at least, and that will depend on him staying healthy...something he has not proven he can do to this point.

I certainly admit that getting to know Tony and the other Class of 2005 kids the way I did by being in San Antonio could come into play....I just recall Tony beating AA CBs all week long...he was probably Iowa's best blocker this year, too...having that skill in the blocking game with above average to good ball skills is a combination I would sign up for right now.

Would you like to have him back for next year? I know I would

The reason Tony may be unappreciated because so much of his talent is in his blocking. Not only that, there were times the defense was playing particular attention to him in the passing game.

No, I would not. He's had 5 years where he teased me with his promise. I don't need another year of that. Maybe you do, but I don't. With him gone it means other players have a chance to do their thing and not be in his shadow.

What I like about the college game is that most players are gone within 4 or 5 years. I will NEVER, EVER look back wondring/thinking it would be great if ......... that living in the past thinking does nobody any good, especially when it's a player that rarely was there in the present.

Wow, I'm shocked by HF's post. Tony was physically the best TE I can remember at Iowa. A terrific blocker, great hands, better than average speed...what more do you want? Of course to stay healthy, but that is a crapshoot.

I've never seen HF post about Tony being a Chinadoll by the coaches. If HF cares to catch us up, go ahead. This came from Iowa's coaches or other coaches?

Wow you don't want a STUD TE on your team becausae of the chance he might get hurt....LOL that is all i got to say.

I'd take Moeaki in a minute...when the kid was healthy it would be a close race between him and Clark as the best Iowa TE. Great athlete who was a better blocker than Dallas was. But to say you're glad he's gone is ridiculous.

I understand the lovefest for Tony, I really do. However, through the course of 5 years he wasn't healthy often enough and when he was he wasn't always consistent. What I don't understand is the comparisons between Clark and Moeaki. One has two solid (perhaps better than) years of showing up and making plays. The other, WHEN HEALTHY, would show up for a game or two and tease us with his ability.

When you have to preface what you're going to say with the words 'when healthy' then you usually don't have much of an arguement.

Inconsistant? Stop smoking drugs before you post please..he had the best hands on the field everytime he stepped on it. You can say he is a china doll if you want but people cant help when they get hurt. KF says he is the most complete TE he has ever coached but you dont think he is very good...I think ill take coaches word on it..

This class helped us win an Orange Bowl. The kids that stayed their whole careers for the most part stayed out of trouble and provided good leadership. What more can you ask them to do? I think they should be proud of themselves.

Sounds like you have it figured out and I can't change that perception. You'll remember him differently than what I or the stats ever will. I never said he or 'people' can help when they get hurt.

The facts speak for themselves- He was hurt often. If you're able to dispute that then please do so.

When 'healthy' (i.e. on the field) the memory of his production far exceeds his actual production. Please, prove me otherwise.

Just so you know, in '09 Tony had 3 games where he was hurt. He can't help those or all those other games/years where he was hurt.

In 4 of the 10 games he played he had a total of 2 catches for a GRAND TOTAL of 8 yards.
In two other games he had a total of 5 catches for 53 yards.
On the year he had 30 catches with 10 of those in one game (UNI). In three games he had 19 of his 30 receptions on the years and all of his TD's.

While stats don't tell the whole story, they tell enough of the story. If the story you read out of those stats is one of consistency than I would suggest it's either foolish consistency or you don't know how to read.

Jon, seems to me the Moeaki debate is overshadowing the fact that this was a nice piece of journalism and an interesting look at that heralded 2005 class. It is a vivid reminder of the major difference between the recruiting hype and what you end up with four or five years down the road -- important to keep in mind as we approach signing day.

I think it also again highlights the extraordinary work this staff does every year -- and with better results in recent years -- to find less-heralded players with raw talent and a strong worth ethic, and to develop them into football players who generally tend to stay around, produce and go on to good careers.

Good piece. Thanks for compiling.

Please show me where his hands were inconsistant????..you didnt say his production was inconsistant you said Hands....One of us does need to learn how to read...that is you..i need to learn how to spell...I dont want to start a war with you because i do agree with most of what you have to say...but show me where him having inconsistant hands has to do with his lack of production.. the lack of more catches does have to do with him missing games to injury but alot of it has to do with not being able to get him the ball more either the QB missing him or KOK not calling plays for him...The defence keying in on him pry has alot to do with it as well..

p.s. the smoking drugs comment was more for fun then an actual attack on you

HF some of that is a little disengenuous and I think you know it. Moeaki was constantly double teamed after the Michigan game. He also was kept in to block in pass protection a lot. He was targeted maybe an average of 3 times a game until the bowl game. What were his bowl stats when he wasn't double teamed? Moeaki ran very good routes, was a very, very good blocker and was very injury prone. He was still the second best TE in the Ferentz era and will be the 2nd highest TE picked by round in the NFL draft ahead of Chandler's 4th round selection.
