Really CJ?

CJ isnt seeing and recogninzing things quick enough right now, hes also a statue back there. The Oline hasnt played well, but this isnt all on them. Even the long pass to Jerminic Smith was very late, Jerminic should have caught that ball about the 20 and walked into the endzone.

One of my observation is it was apparent CJ was getting no blocking at times and was not sensing the rush. Why not move the pocket? The creativity is so hit and miss with the play calling by Greg Davis it is weird. The only thing I do not know is how much is CJ changing the plays? Maybe the plays are being changed more than we know.

CJ is lost. He doesn't see the defense and throw horrible passes. If we are counting on CJ to rescue this season, get ready for a 6-7 or 7-6 season. Bring in Stanley and lets prepare for the future.

CJ has been sacked 14 times in 5 games. He was sacked 30 times in 14 games last season. Our wide receivers can't get open and CJ is standing in the pocket, too long, trying to give them time to get open. You can point a finger at the OL and WR's before CJ.

I thought the same thing on that play. He waited way too long to throw it. Especially since it was his first read and he should have seen how open he was breaking. Your right if he throws it early on the money to him at the 20ish yard line Smith would have danced into the end zone. Throwing it as late as he did and short is why it ended up the way it did. For whatever reasons CJ is really holding the ball and has very little awareness in the pocket. Iowa needs to do way more rolling out for him and cut the field down and let him throw on the move. It's like Iowa is trying to audition him for the NFL by having him in the pocket so much. Granted he needs to do that too but not at the detriment of the team if it's not working. Adjustments have always been and continue to be the biggest flaw of the coaching staff. Be it week to week or within games. They just can't seem to quit banging their head against the wall. Do something different when what your doing isn't working...

He is a pedestrian QB without the mobility. With the mobility, he is really, really good.

Ferentz has a tendency to get his best players hurt. "Steel on steel", ever heard that? It's a dangerous way to coach, IMHO

Well maybe you should watch tape and see if his receivers are getting any kind of real separation?? The pass at the end there to J Smith was on a rope and dude has to catch those balls. We don't have great receivers and our LT could not stop his guy and for whatever reason GD chose not to allow him some help in blocking that guy. What I do not understand is the running game not being better than what it is.

New center, new guard, new fullbacks..... especially the new fullbacks.

Stats say otherwise. Facts are your friend, my friend.

There are lies, damn lies and statistics. Statistically, Stanzi was better his last year, but he was a poorer QB. It always seemed to me that he was pushed so hard to cut down on the interceptions that he lost his edge. Junior year, he seemed more Favre-ish in his approach..."I can make this throw...intercepted? Okay, I'll get you the next drive." He led and the team followed. Go back and watch that Indiana game. He threw FIVE interceptions, and no one panicked. "Rick's got this. He's Ricky-freakin'-Stanzi the Manzi!" And they did it. Him getting hurt was the most crushing moment of my 40+ years of Hawkeye football fandom.

CJB is tight out there, he's hesitant...a lot of his passes look to me like when a pitcher is trying to aim the ball. I think that's what's making him late on those passes...like he's trying to decide if he can make the throw instead of just trusting his arm and instinct.

On a different note...how hard would it have been to put a TE on the left to help slow down the DE that was killing CJB all game?

Then get mobile, dang it! What is the deal anyway with the statue technique?

Exactly! We have not 1 but 2 OL coaches with the last name Ferentz and we cannot block anyone.

I wonder if there is a great external power consuming CJ's time and concentration? A force that most of us have fallen prey to in our day.

All I can say is....LOL. Why are you telling US your brilliant observations, lol....send it to....gregory-davis@hawkeyefootball.com

Yup, 'we' don't block ANYONE, lol...........Hopefully James gets cut soon so we can have 3 Ferentz's that don't know how to teach blocking, Bahahahahahaha............

^^^^ "DaCoach" from Hawkeyereport. Banned several times. A lifetime of legal entanglements and emotional problems. I know, but I can't reveal how.

If they lose this game they need to bench the seniors and start getting the under classmen some experience. They won't do it. But I would understand if the coaching staff did this. At this point all the seniors are killing time waiting for their next job.

CJ , Jaleel Johnson, Faith Ekakitie's NFL stock has dropped with this season. Desmond King will be in the first 3 rounds. The other 3 will be lucky to get picked up on the second day. We don't know what's going on in the locker room, but one thing for sure the senior leadership isn't there.

It was out of reach, how was he supposed to catch it? If he would have put just a little more air under it then it would have been a catch
Probably has something to do with being the only power 5 team to start 2 walk on lineman. That just can't happen, and doesn't happen anywhere but Iowa.

I agree. I get it that Iowa lineman are "underrecruited" so they don't get the stars maybe they deserve, but c'mon we are Iowa can't we at least get all the 3 stars we want?? Seems those kind of guys might develop quicker than walk ons. Seems like O line recruiting subsidizes the other positions you know because we think we can turn Jimmy down the street into a great lineman.

That he wears the brace is indicative. One doesn't want further damage and people oft don't know about or forget about the psychology after a knee injury. A real good brace isn't like what one buys at Dick's. It keeps things in place to prevent further tearing. Formerly he played like Farve. Now he looks like he's trying to be Brady. He isn't Brady by personality. The brace probably has some impact, not because of the brace but that he has to wear a brace.

I guess I would have to slap that same brace on and try to run to understand, but I would probably at least be a little more fearless with a brace on it. weird that last year he has that sports hernia that must have hurt like hell and he is out there running wild and diving. Maybe we just don't know the whole story with that knee. he doesn't really limp on it though.

I would like to see the tape on the play where Northwestern only rushed 3 lineman and Croston got beat for a sack. Would love to isolate where the receivers and TE were and where the back was. I know the guy got to CJ quick but I think he had at least 4 seconds. Maybe not. I also wonder when teams blitz like NDSU did whether our receivers are reading that or they are supposed to and break routes short or whether we just assume blitz will be picked up and run route depths the same as normal. I know I watched one play against NDSU where CJ was in trouble and Kittle was just standing with a guy next to him. Maybe just one bad play.

People keep saying that on these forums, and they also say that about Stanzi. I dont disagree with you but why did he regress? People say it was the way that the coaching affected them. I am not trying to be facetious or obnoxious here.

I mean we all saw how Jake Rudock had a pretty damn good year at Michigan last year so is KF and coaching staff having this effect?

I would say there is a good chance it is so..

Look at the difference in talent at receiver.. Michigan has NFL talent, Iowa has high school talent. McCaron, Vandeburg, Scheel, Smith? CJ has nobody to throw to. We haven't even seen a decent defense yet. Just wait, the worst is yet to come. Northwestern had an awful secondary, and we still couldn't get open.
