Re-do one play in Iowa FB history

Great topic and responses.

To me the one play is the Big10 Championship Game.

In another topic, (sorry) for old-timers like my dad, who was a pre-teen at the time, had instant disdain for Notre Dame and "the Fainting Irish" of 1953. Utter disgust from Dad every time ND was on tv when I was a kid. It stuck with me.

#1 ND faked injuries at the end of each half to stop the clock which allowed them to throw for touchdowns to tie the game at 14-14. To stop the first half clock the injury occurred after ND had huddled and realized they weren't going to get a play off.

In the second half they faked an injury after each play. To stop the clock at the end of the game, ND's OL got their signals mixed up and two linemen fainted side-by-side.

We think Dantonio and MSU was bad vs. Iowa, older generations saw the fake injury perfected by The Fainting Irish.

I had to look up the details for the game but the "hatred" for ND is in my DNA.

By the way, Forest got an unheard of 10 year extension after the 1953 season.

Who knew Barta has been AD for that long?

Not a play, but a decision. Shonn Greene decides to come back for the 2009 season instead of opting for the NFL.

Stanzi would have just handed off to him instead of the naked versus Wooten. That's a NC caliber team with Greene.
Good post. Totally agree.

Nothing new, but my #1 is the Stanzi injury. We had something very special going on and poof, our leader, our magic-man, is gone. We flounder vs NU (blow a lead at home), then go all snowflake vs OSU at the end and settle for the Orange Bowl when so much more could have been achieved. (I was at both games).

And yes, the Wisky punt put Iowa into a several-year funk.

And FWIW, I have never been able to bring myself to re-watch the B1G champ game vs MSU. Went in person, was stunned beyond belief at the end. So close, so damned close. While driving back to Iowa I was in a daze....was like re-living an unrelenting bad dream. Rose Bowl seemed so shallow/hollow after that.

That's what the players thought too.

Heck, that's what I thought.

I'm not sure if it's a single play, but the 2002 loss to Iowa State always irks me.
I think Banks not fumbling the second time not only has implications for the end of the season - Iowa outperformed OSU the second half of the season - but it could have drastically changed the Iowa/ISU landscape. They would no longer be able to say they beat our best team in 15 years, totally deflating them against us. Just think of how much better the seasons would be if Iowa won half the games they lost againsts ISU.

'15 BIG championship game. Incomplete deep ball in the end zone that went through T. Smith's hands. Those points would have forced MSU to go for 2 on the final drive. We could'a been somebody!

I would have to go with Conner Cook's run for a 4th down conversion in the Big Ten CCG in 2015. MSU was trailing Iowa 13-9 with less than 2 minutes left. If Iowa makes that stop, it was late enough in the game it would almost certainly result in a Iowa victory and Iowa almost certainly would make the playoffs.

Any other play is less certain what the final outcome would be. If Banks does not fumble a 2nd time against ISU in 2002, would Iowa still go 8-0 in the BigTen? I don't know.

If stanzi does not get hurt against NW in 2009, would Iowa go on to beat NW and OSU? I don't know.

That's a good one too.

B1G Championship. Without question. Bad angle at one tackle, or seemingly losing a TD pass in the lights. Either play significantly would have changed Iowa footballl going forward. Getting in hte CFP in tear two, even if we got blown out, would have been huge in terms of exposure.

Yes, that would have made the final record 13-1 rather than 12-2 if the hawks got beat in the playoffs. Not saying this is my pick for a do over.

I think the fake punt by Wisky started a landslide of bad shit for the hawks over the next few years. That play is huge. We have to remember that even before the fake punt the hawks intercepted a pass but could only get 3 points out of it. A few first downs and a TD seals that game and there is no fake punt.

B1GCG '15, a 3rd-and-8 pass that somehow got through two or three Hawk defenders.near the sideline. I LITERALLY thought, "Game over", then thought, "Good Lord, is THAT going to haunt us?"

First play of the Rose Bowl. It wouldn't have changed the outcome but it would have been nice to have a few plays of hope and excitement. Or maybe the pick 6. We were moving the ball well and getting the score to 14-7 could have changed momentum. Those plays are behind pretty much all that were already mentioned here obvioulsy.

1. 4th down stop of MSU in 2015. That close to being Big Ten champs.
2. Fake punt against the Badgers (the beginning or perhaps foreshadowing of the program's slide)
3 OSU 2009 (can't pick out one play, it was a series...but KFz playing it safe was pretty weak)
4. Punting at Nebraska's 23 yard line (or whatever it was). Wouldn't have changed the outcome but it was embarrassing as hell.

Hiring KF....No I really jest. Brad Banks turnover, which ultimately gets back to his not starting the previous season. Would have been playing for back to back top 4 finishes and maybe for the NC BACK to BACK.

After that, Vandy handing off late in the game playing for overtime AT OSU.

I'll be honest, my first thought was having Ronnie Harmon get hurt in the Minnesota game, just hurt enough to keep him out of the Rose Bowl. I know it's bad of me to think that, but...
