RAYMON LEAVES UNIVERSITY

IOWA CITY, Iowa - - University of Iowa defensive end John Raymon has decided to withdraw from classes at the University of Iowa. Raymon is a true freshman from Richboro, Pa, (Council Rock North HS).

“John has decided to withdraw from classes and leave the University of Iowa,â€￾ said Iowa Associate Athletic Director for Compliance, Fred Mims. “We wish John academic and athletic success when he chooses to enroll at another institution.â€￾

Iowa (5-2) plays at Minnesota, Saturday at 2:30 p.m. (BTN HD).

Sometimes it's just not a good fit. That being said, we sure do seem to lose a lot on the DL. What's up with that?

I just want to know if Ekakite thinks he can come in and play DE for us next year, cause honestly, if he learns contain, he has the size.

It would be amazing if we could snag Ekakite. I know Ward said it was his number one priority.

Those are some good choices, though you missed a few I beleive, but other than Yanda and Banks, and Chandler, those guys have done nothing or didn't even stick around. I'm saying no chance because Iowa rarely does this. Also, I think they're high on some hs recruits that they would rather use a scholarhsip on.

Not saying it won't happen (hence the doubtful with one JUCO), but no way they get 2

We had assumed this 4 weeks ago that he wouldn't be a part of the team.

Coming back we have Bigach, Alvis, Davis and Ganglione that have gotten reps this year. Bigach has some potential to be solid (not great) but can realistically only play about 50-60% of the snaps. Ganglione is just to small. Can play a few snaps here and there. Davis doesn't appear can stay healthy. Alvis has some potential but doesn't play consistently and needs to get a lot stronger.

Other possible players that could help next year? Anybody that hasn't redshirted hasn't gotten significant reps despite poor performance and rash of injuries...that is a bad sign. Last week we had Daniel and Nardo out; Forgy, Mike Daniels and Carl Davis banged up and guys like Hardy, Trinca-Pasait still didn't see the field until the last drive.

That leaves the redshirts and incoming players. Cooper and Spears look to have the size to play but Spears is converted linebacker. McCinn won't be big enough to play for 2 more years. Anybody else? The dline just doesn't have the potential. Linebacker play has been bad this year but there is atleast hope for the future with improvement from Morris, Kirksey, Hitchens and Alston plus bringing guys back from injury.

The few I left off, I believe were original Iowa recruits out of HS that didn't qualify or left and came back (Solomon, Spievey, etc...)

Sure maybe only the three you mentioned were quality starters, but Gattas did play some valuable special teams. Heiar is still on the team (only a soph) and could play next season or the following. It's not common practice for Ferentz to take Juco's, but in times of low quality inventory, he has pulled the trigger.

Why not? There's precendence for going this route in previous years when depth was limited:

Yanda
Heiar
Guillory
Gattas
Belleus
N. Chandler
Banks
Orne - transfer

Most of those guys we landed late in the process ... and only after high-school guys who were higher on our board were no longer viable options.

if we can't sell early PT now, we never will. this might be our only chance to use that card on some blue chippers.

I wasn't including them either. Moslty guys like:
Wesley Thibeaux

There is a reason that Iowa doesn't get JUCOs often and it is because they take time to develop and learn the system. Generally who we have in house is better than what they can get at the JUCO level. That may be the same this year. Just because they tear up JUCO doesn't mean they'll be any good hence the staff would rather take the chance to develop a player for 4 or 5 years than one for 1 or 2

the only guy not productive on his list was guillory - all the rest were stars or at least contributed on-field. haeir injured in the car accident doesn't count yet.
