Rank player importance

Let's rank the order of player importance this year. I'll start.

1. Marble- he's the team leader and probably the clear #1.

2. White- I've been a little down on him due to the way he finished the year but then he makes an all star team and kills it in Europe.

3. Gesell- really needs to stay healthy this year.

4. Jok- he just keeps scoring points. I think his game translates fine to college and he will help a ton to limit scoring droughts.

5. Woody- his interior defense made a huge difference last year and will only be better this year.

6. Uthoff- might be the most versatile player on the team.

7. Basabe- if he feels the urgency of being a senior and plays full time with the energy he's capable of, he could move up.

8. Gabe O- might be the funnest player on the team to watch. If he keeps improving at this pace he will be a major contributor.

9. Clemmons- very solid back up pg. He will have some huge games.

10. Josh O- I have a feeling he will shoot allot better this year. He could easily move up depending on how much better.

11. McCabe- another senior that's capable of major contributions depending on shooting and hustle.

12. Meyer- probably not much room for him this year and probably the consensus last pick. He has allot of time left tho.

Notice that number 9,10, and 11 have all had starting rolls in the past. It really goes to show how far we have come in a short time.

Woodbury - He has to become more of a threat and a 7'0" if his conditioning has caught up with his fundamentals.
Jok - Can he be the third scoring option Iowa has sorely lacked, his overall skill and college readiness is what sticks out for me as a freshman.
Uthoff - Different kind of Forward than Iowa is used to having can see him play a major role in creating mismatches.
Clemmons - Can he be a sparkplug and leader in the second unit, or if Gesell is struggling, he runs the fast break better than anyone on the roster.

I think the top 3 are pretty obvious in any order actually Marble, White and Gesell. Each has to elevate their game just as anyone else, but they have the shortest distance to go.

Iowa has a legit roster, something that has been developing since Fran got there.

MG might not be top 3.

Seeing the way Jok developed and JO has shot, MG might not be dramatically needed at the 2.

Woody might not get the most minutes or be the most effective 5.

As Marble and White go, so go the Hawks.

He has never scored a point, and he's never played a college game.

I think Melsahn Basabe could play an important role on this team. I'd like to see him come off the bench as the 6th man and bring the scoring and shot blocking that pumps of the team and the fans and hopefully extend Iowa leads even with the second team.

Sounds like his offensive game picked right up and fit with the team in Europe. Are his knees solid? I would think that might show up first on the defensive in in the lateral movement if an issue at all. How was his defense? Shot sounded as advertised.

1. Marble 2. White 3. Basabe 4. Gesell 5. Woodbury 6. Oglesby 7. Uthoff 8. Jok 9. Gabe 10. Clemmons 11. McCabe 12. Meyer

We will go as far as our offensive rebounding and outside shooting can take us.

I honestly don't see anybody all that much more important the the rest.

Obviously Marble is #1 but when he went in the tank last year the team still did OK and it sounds like Jok can score.

White might be the best player on the team but its not that much of a drop off with Basabe and or Uthoff.

Gessel is good but Clemmons is not much of a drop off either.

Woodbury is a big space eater but Gabe is coming on strong.

Iowa basically has two teams squeezed into one roster.

1a) Marble

1b) White

2) a)Gesell, b)Woody, c)Basabe

3) everyone else

man am i excited for this year.

will be interesting to see what kind of class Fran can put together and if he'll have it locked down by the early signing date.

I guess its kinda hard to be considered a most important player when your backups are almost just as good.

You win the thread.

I will say this, our two "put us over the hump" players are Oglesby and Basabe.

If Jogelsby shoots 40% from 3 and Melly Mel averages over 9 ppg, we win 11 Big Ten games. Book it.

If they both do this and Jok and Uthoff are able to step up? Sheeeeit.

White is much, much better than Basabe and Uthoff.

#1 is obviously Marble. Fran has said in interviews that this is Marble's team. The stats say so too. He's the leading returner in minutes, points, assists, steals, FT%, and 3pters made. Despite the depth we have this year, there's no way we even sniff the recent spring NIT run without him. With his length, versatility, drive, and experience, he's the #1 headache for an opposing D. Only this year, if he's shut down, there are lots of other places for points to come from.

Beyond Marble, it's tough because of our depth. There are lots of arguments that have some validity.

1) Marble
2) White

4) Uthoff
5) Ogelsby
6) Mike G.
