Raise your hand if you thought

All will change next year. Gatens (love him for what he has been through, but will go on record as saying he is no better than a 6th man) will be gone, Cartwright will be gone, Hackabrom will be gone, help I've fallen and can't get up will be gone.

In comes a legit 7' 4* center. In comes a legit 4* PG. In comes a PF / C, a wing and a backup PG that will add depth but more importantly athleticism. White, Basabe, Marble, Oglesby, McCabe, Olaseni and May (listed in order of expected contributions next year) will have another year under their belt.

Nobody can argue that we are not slow and unathletic at the PG, Wing and C position. This all changes very, very soon.

moving to a zone against a smaller team that can shoot is not without SOME merit..especially when that team is getting to the rim at will...its tougher to get to the rim against a zone, which means it may also cut down on on driving and kicking. Given NW's cutting offense, it congests the normal cut back lanes, too

If Matt Gatens were on next year's team, he'd start for that team too. Matt is much better than a 6th man and doesn't get the credit he has deserved because he's played on some of the worst teams in Iowa basketball history.

I'd much rather see a team hit 3's against our zone than the embarrasing man to man iowa plays. At least 5 easy layups in the first half, Sobolewski looked like Rick Barry out there..

We will simply agree to disagree.

Its a chicken and an egg thing when arguing for or against Gatens abilities. If there was a better team surrounding him would he be good enough to start? I personally don't think he would as a Fr / Soph but maybe now that he has gotten bigger / stronger and his shot is falling he might be a starter on a really good team.

He is a one and a half dimensional player. He can shoot the rock from 3 and he is a good passer. He can't dribble penetrate, he can't guard, he doesn't create a mismatch on the offensive side of the ball.

If you had a legit set of bigs, a wing that could penetrate and a PG that could run the show, would Gatens shooting ability really be a key factor in a game? IMO he would likely be replaced by a defensive stopper since the wing, PG and C would control the offensive side of the ball (there is only one ball). He would be brought in as a sharp-shooter for 2-5 minute stretches.

The Gatens debate is tiresome. He is probably our best overall defender, just ask Fran. He has led us in scoring the last 3 years, and has done a solid job getting to the hoop this year and finishing or drawing fouls. He is the very least of our problems, and he will be missed next year, trust me.

Iowa fans have to get over this NW obsession. This is not your dads NW. They have sliced up top ten teams like MSU with their stuff. As McCormick said last nite...Fran said they were the best passing team in the league,by far,and I agree. This is their best team...ever,probably. So losing to them is not a shock, nor an embarrassment. Now,that said, I hope we are more ready for that zone next month, and we kick their arses at Carver.

Can't guard? What are you watching?

Wow, ok I will try again. Dont you think their eyes were lit up all game as they were shredding our inept man to man?

Fran was trying anything he could to find a spark and nothing worked. Making them look at something new was absolutely the correct move.

We were down by 9 points at half and a lot of that was because of our inept offense and turnovers. At least with man we had a fighting chance although it was a small one because we had no answer for their 1-3-1.
