Question on player conduct for everyone

I was in town for the game this past weekend and was staying at the Riverside Casino. Got back to the hotel around 1 am, and was playing blackjack until about 3-3:15. I spotted a well known Iowa player also there playing at the tables. He's definitely of age, so there was nothing illegal about it. It's pure speculation on my part since I didn't speak to him, but he seemed to be alone, not just there with friends to have a good time. And he was still there when I headed back to my room.

Does anyone think this is a problem or an issue? As someone who has battled a gambling problem from a younger age, it just concerned me to see. I feel like I can tell the difference between someone who is gambling for entertainment and fun, and someone who's not.

Not at all. I'd rather him out gambling then boozing at a bar and possibly getting in a fight/public intox/owi

I agree that other guys can cause more problems drinking and wreaking havoc. I'm not passing any judgment obviously either, since I was there myself. Just was curious as to what anyone else thought about it.

I have tried to get drunk at Riverside. Weakest drinks in the world, and a 2 drink limit. Probably the safest place for an underaged UI student in all of Iowa City after that great game!!

First, not sure whether or not your story is believable. Second, as someone who (as was self-admitted) has "battled a gambling problem", your showing up at the tables should be of great concern in and of itself.

Ok, I made up the story up out of whole cloth.

As an Iowa fan what motivation would I have to do that? I can say who it was but I'm not looking to spread rumors on the board. It was simply a question. Leave it to unrealistic, Iowa can do no wrong fans like yourself to get upset by it.

You have a gambling problem and you are staying at a casino and gambling until 3am. Sounds like you have it licked.

It has to be tough to come down from those night games. I was up until 2:30, and I'm just a fan. If I'm a player I'm looking for a place to try to relax a little bit, not get hassled, and not get caught up in the post-game party scene. The casino seems like just as good a place as any other to do that.

At no point did I say I did, but that isn't the point.

You guys are probably right, I'm sure the coaching staff and scouts wouldn't be at all concerned about it, so I shouldn't be either.

He's 21, right? He's not breaking any laws. It sounds like he was laying low. Maybe it's possible for you to identify gamblers with addictions but it seems a bit of a leap to make that comment after seeing him for one night.

Zero credibility where? What the hell are you even talking about? On a fan message board?

Please don't tell me you are really dumb enough to think people care what you say because you post eight million times a day.

Things like this are exactly why Iowa fans are mocked anywhere you go. It's embarrassing.

I'd rather he was out drinking than gambling.

This. IF there were a gambling problem, that's a much bigger deal than getting a little too rowdy downtown. Dude gets into serious debt, doesn't know where to turn, and the next thing you know he could be in REAL trouble with some not-so-nice people.

You claim you have battled a gambling problem since an early stage, yet you are staying at a casino hotel and playing blackjack until 3:15 a.m. or later?

I feel like I can tell the difference between someone who is gambling for entertainment and fun, and someone who's not.

Yeah, and the alcoholic can tell who's drinking socially and who's having communion 12 hours a night. You might want to get some help.

h-bob's reply was exactly my first thought, as well. You asked if "anyone thinks this is a problem or issue ... " and he said it was -- for you -- because you admitted that you have battled the problem. Based on your defensive, attacking counter-reply, you are the only one upset.

In true addict fashion, when the finger was appropriately pointed back at you (rather than playing into your weak attempt to project your issue onto someone else based on limited perspective and speculation), you go defensive and hostile. It's part of the battle.

If this player fumbles 4 times in the Rose Bowl I would be concerned. Barring that I think I would be more concerned about myself.
