Question on player conduct for everyone

He probably was just trying to get away from peers that do wanna go to house parties and bars.

It was meant to be more of a question to see what everyone thought about it, and it's obvious no one really has a problem with it. I'm guessing no one would have an issue with a player spotted falling over drunk too.

And at no point did I say, "I USED to have an issue with gambling". It's still a problem. I'm not looking to cast stones at the kid, otherwise I'd mention the name.

It's not my place to email the athletic director and head coach about it. My guess is if it's actually a problem somehow they would know about it.

Well, this thread went downhill in a hurry.
I'd be surprised to see any college kid out alone that time of night. But sounds like he was behaving so, no harm no foul.
Lock thread plz.:D

Seriously, if you're this concerned, there is no harm in e-mailing Barta about it. What's the worst that can happen? They'll take a look and find there's no problem, no harm done. Or they'll look, find a problem, and get the kid some help.

Nobody seemed to know about DJK or A-Rob. Doesn't mean they didn't have problems.

I am only concerned because I know how many financial problems gambling can cause, but most everyone else thinks I am way off base for even bringing it up.

I sat with Mitch King a couple of late nights down at Riverside at the Hold'em tables. Cheap and safe entertainment. And he seemed to turn out okay. Anything can be a problem in excess. I see a lot of players out at Coral Ridge as well. Now if they are their all day every day I'd say they have a shopping problem. Most things are okay in moderation, minus a few choice drugs and bad habits...

Do you need somebody to call your boss if you are doing something perfectly legal over the weekend?

He was not breaking any law, who cares. The morality police need to take a break and mind their own business.

These are adults. Let them be adults.

When you make your report to Barta/Ferentz, make sure you point out how embarrassed you are to be an Iowa fan and be mocked wherever you go. That should instill a certain sense of urgency in their reaction.

Man, people really do just read what they want to on here.

Find me the line where I said I was going to write them.

I was in town for the game this past weekend and was staying at the Riverside Casino. Got back to the hotel around 1 am, and was playing blackjack until about 3-3:15. I spotted a well known Iowa player also there playing at the tables. He's definitely of age, so there was nothing illegal about it. It's pure speculation on my part since I didn't speak to him, but he seemed to be alone, not just there with friends to have a good time. And he was still there when I headed back to my room.

Does anyone think this is a problem or an issue? As someone who has battled a gambling problem from a younger age, it just concerned me to see. I feel like I can tell the difference between someone who is gambling for entertainment and fun, and someone who's not.
If you really were concerned, why didn't you go talk to the player then and there? What would you hope to accomplish by bringing this up on a message board?

having one DB bring it up on a message board is better than having dozens of drunk students trying to get you a camera all night.

This. IF there were a gambling problem, that's a much bigger deal than getting a little too rowdy downtown. Dude gets into serious debt, doesn't know where to turn, and the next thing you know he could be in REAL trouble with some not-so-nice people.

You've got to be kidding me. This is the Riverside Casino we're talking about. I can't imagine a more white-bread place to be on a Saturday night. Who are the not-so-nice people he's going to be in debt to? The blue-hairs on the nickel slots?

The idea of emailing Barta is insane. If I'm a football player, this is one of the reasons I'd get sick of living in Iowa City. Seriously, do we have to analyze every single move these guys make?

Hopefully said player does not get in too deep to any casinos. Would hate to have a point shaving issue come up.

I used to see Tony Moeaki playing BJ and Roulette at Riverside all the time during the season. I didn't have a problem with it...

The OP asked a valid question.

His responses in this thread makes him seem like a complete ******.

And btw ive travelled 20+ times to watch Iowa play over the years and never witnesses any mocking

I have run into players at casino's on numerous occasions on Saturday night. They have always been in the Quad Cities. Not uncommon for them to travel alone. Last one I talked too said he liked to get out of IC on Saturday nights to get away where he can lay low and have a good time without being noticed. Matt Sherman used to come to Davenport on Sat nights. I dont see a problem with it. Iowa City is a tough place for the kids to hang out. These kids put huge amounts of hours in from Monday morning to Saturday afternoon. I would say 12-24 hours to decompress during season is nothing to be worried about.

I think you're all missing the point.

How long of a ride was it down there on a moped? And will the valet park it for him?

C'mon people...a little perspective here.
