Question for Jon

I don't know what this has to do with anything, but it's a lot of interesting info. Thanks.

When Jon posted his opinion on the OP question, I was reminded of Jon writing in the past about coaches shouldn't be at a school coaching football for more than 10 years.

Sign me up for some of that action, too.

Setting the bar at 5.5 is just plain silly. Do we really set the standards at Iowa that low? Again, if that is all we expect, we do not need to pay 3.7 million a season for it.
6 wins next year is horrible with the schedule we have.

It is true that we lose some very good football players at the end of this year, with LB's being the major issue and secondarily, the O line. However, most teams suffer this fate on nearly a yearly basis. The key is having good football players backing up the seniors. I think Iowa has that advantage at the LB position, though there will be growing pains. The D line has always, in Iowa's scheme, been the key issue and we have a very good group coming back nearly intact next year...they have the potential to make our new LB's look pretty good! As to the offense: The key for next year is the improvement we see from Jake Rudock. Increasingly, the QB is the key to a good offense in D1 football. The fact that we have two strong QB candidates and will return our starter bodes well for this key position. Secondly, we have some very promising O linemen coming through the system and our receivers are starting to show some promise, including some potentially good redshirts. It is overstated to say we are losing our TE because of the strength of those returning who actually qualify as starters in terms of experience and production. The major key to offensive improvement will be the growth of our OC's system. The third year is usually key in the successful installation of a new system and that would be next year. With the lighter schedule, we should expect a very potent offense in 2014. If we don't see it, he should be gone. As to KF, I believe next year is the key to his future at Iowa.

Except for the fact that a lot of people went 6-6 or worse because you factor in losing 2 games a year based solely on awful gameday coaching. This is what people don't understand.

Name the two losses this year "based solely on gameday coaching". Please. Because if "This is what people don't understand", then someone is clueless, and it isn't me.

NIU is the only game remotely in that category, but you can't put it solely on coaching.

Sorry. The buck stops at the top. Losing games at home to MAC teams is unacceptable. I know you all are tired of the salary thing, but you can't ignore it. He makes 3 million + more than the head coach at N. Illinois. Ferentz got the glory (big money) for the good wins they have had. He gets the grief for the head scratching losses.

On his toes?

Here is the deal; he's getting 2014. So to sit here and say he should stay or go when I know he's getting 2014 is playing in traffic. Plus, let's see how the rest of this year plays out.

I would say this; if Iowa loses Saturday....no. Not going there unless I have to.

If Iowa loses on Saturday please do not ban me. I will need a place to vent. Thanks in advance.

I have a great deal of respect for Kirk. He and his wife Mary have been amazing assets to the community and state. I truly believe that and always will, and the things he has done for people in this state...well, the stories could fill a shelf on a library.

He's also done a fantastic job of leading the Iowa football program...he's on the Iowa football coaching Mt Rushmore, along with Hayden Fry, Howard Jones and Evy. The success Iowa has had the last decade has paid for the facilities upgrades and he has helped position Iowa well for what comes after him.

All this said, he's not perfect. No one is. He has blind spots and I hope those don't ultimately leave a smear on his legacy.

SPOT ON!!

How is NIU a "head scratching" loss? Undefeated team, top 20 in BCS, only a 3-point underdog, returning QB with Heisman mention, etc.

Was it a "good" loss? No loss is, even when we play respectable against an O$U.

Again, the 4 losses this year have come against tema that have a COMBINED 3 losses, through week 10.

Here we go again with everyone thinking Iowa will take advantage of a favorable schedule, 2014 will be a struggle, games at pittsburgh and maryland will be tough, the homecoming game against Indiana will be tough. this is where the program is at right now.

So you change Melrose or Hawkins Dr. to kirk ferentz way?..... Rename the weight room, practice facility after him? Once he steps down, gets fired, he will have honorary captain status anytime the iowa administration wants to roll him out there. I dunno, I am not sure where I am going with this.

Come on man, let's wait until this year is over before getting frustrated over next years. I am stressed out enough about Iowa needing a win just to qualify for the Pizza Bowl at Purdue.

There has not been anything easy for Iowa football for quite some time. I would be nervous about the schedule even if it was full of nothing but MAC schools.

He didn't say, or even infer that Anyone has "set the bar" at 5.5 or that is what we expect. Goodness you reach at times.

IMO...and many on here agree...7-8 is the bar...most years.

Carry on.

tough schedule next year with road games at Minnesota, Purdue, Illinois, Pittsburgh and Maryland. It' will be just pure hell.

Iowa could win 10 games and be mediocre.
