Quavon Matthews in Transer Portal

Hate to see him go as I still get excited when Iowa recruits actual receivers to play receiver, but I hope him the best.

I do not understand the trend of going into the portal during the season. Especially a season where the team you are on is in the top 4.... Stay, continue to practice and lift with the team, keep improving yourself. Enjoy the wild ride this season could be. Then transfer to UCF (or elsewhere) in the spring.

Hmm Iowa's going to stop recruiting those kids Paschal is coaching if none of em can cut the mustard and just transfer in the middle of the season..

Hard telling what his reasons are. Nobody likes getting jumped on the depth chart from kids behind you. I bet the Ankeny kid Brecht if he wasn't playing baseball woulda jumped him too.

Maybe he looked at the calendar and saw that winter is coming and as a FL kid didn't want to spend another one up there? But yeah it's an odd time to leave now. It's not like he'd been playing this yr and then just lost his job. Depth chart has been this way all summer and since season started nothings really changed other then the reps Bruce and Johnson have been getting more of recently that he never was in line to get anyway

I was waiting for one of our receivers who were down on the depth chart to enter the portal. It's just the way it is today. And, he's seen two true freshman get on the field in front of him. But wish him the best, for sure.

Doesn't look great for Brecht anymore either to be honest. With two true freshman already getting a ton of snaps I wonder if he's not questioning his decision. He could be on his way to becoming a millionaire right now which I know wasn't his main goal, and I know it's early in the process, but if Bruce and Johnson stick around I don't see him getting a ton of time on the field. Especially with Ritter being just a sophomore.

Timing kinda sucks for him too because Jones and Tracy both have their covid year to use as well if they want and he doesn't.

I have little doubt that it is a depth chart thing:
Tracy, Ragini, Jones
Bruce, Johnson, Ritter
Cooper, Vines, Hutson
Injured Brecht, Matthews, Other WalkOns...
(My guess based on who has actually played and when during the games).

And that doesn't include TEs, RBs, and FBs for touches.

I was really happy to see both Hutson and Vines in the game Saturday. I love Hutson as a teammate and raw ability. Vines looks like speed demon who just needs to refine some technique. Both will be playing more next season I think.

I am glad Cooper hung around for his Covid year. He is a good team player. He deserves to ride this wave.

Brody has been banged up since camp and that has slowed him. If he throws the towel in that easily....

He said he wanted to play not just football, but Iowa football. Don't paint him as a quitter just yet.

He's got time on his side. I doubt those guys will use that covid yr. 5 plus yrs of playing college ftball is a lot but maybe.... Brecht is a legit 6'4 athletic dude I would think guys like him and that Kyler Kasper we are in on who they say is 6'6 with shoes on we could find roles for regardless of the depth chart. Namely in the red zone.

Brecht obviously has a plan B if that turns into a decision for him but I don't see him doin it before his RS Soph yr.

Heard a podcast this summer explaining that just as often its the coaches' decision that he should go and the let him save face and position it however they want. That's true in the commitment / decommit situation as well as after on the team.

some kids just want to play, they size it up and decide for themselves.

some staffs are managing their roster and having that uncomfortable conversation with a player about the chances of them playing.

its all good.

The only receiver I could see using their Covid year is Jones (unless this is it, current transfer rules confuse me.)

I totally see your angle and think it makes a lot of sense. I even think, if he was my kid, I might even give him that kind of advice. But I also think it's very dependent on the kid.

In the big picture he's, what, 18, 19? And a looooooong ways from home, who knows what could be going on in terms of that. He misses his dog for all we know. Maybe something about the Iowa experience is just not for him. Maybe being buried on the depth chart isn't his idea of a fun challenge.

Whatever the case may be, if he doesn't want to be here bad enough to leave mid season, he should go. I don't mean that with any snark whatsoever. If it's that much of a priority, I'm inclined to let the kid do his thing, no hard feelings.

If you have the kind of physical talents that allow you to be a P5-level scholarship football player, then you have (a) options and (b) a very short clock (5 years to play 4). Depending on the kid and circumstances, yeah, I could definitely see putting a rush on things.

I could see sticking it out, too. Just depends.

Jesus F Christ. At what point did I “paint him as a quitter?” The only thing I said…at all…was that I didn’t think it looked good for him with two true freshman and a sophomore getting playing time and targets right now.

Nowhere did I say I thought he was transferring, and nowhere did I say he was a quitter. I said that if things stayed the same, he might not be an impact player.

Fuckin' A man!!

Things like: "With two true freshman already getting a ton of snaps I wonder if he's not questioning his decision." What decision do you think he is questioning if not 'should I stay with football here?'
Maybe he is questioning his haircut? His decision for double hot sauce on his fucking Pancahero's burrito bowl?

What else could your statement imply?

Questioning his decision to play football or go in the MLB draft, maybe? Which doesn't mean in any way that I think he's going to quit. How 'bout that?

That would be a valid question, but I don't think that is what you initially meant.

Thanks for playing. Rowdy, show our runner up what he will be taking home today!

Steak Ums. A fucking lifetime worth of Steak Ums.

You can think what you want. I like how you left this part out of my original quote...

"He could be on his way to becoming a millionaire right now which I know wasn't his main goal"

How else other than being drafted in the MLB would he have done that?

What of it?

And he could have totally left millions in NIL on the table by not choosing ISU.

Seems strange to be trying to transfer as a freshman, but to each his own I suppose. If you wanted to play as a freshman you probably should’ve been looking at the Iowa States and Nebraskas of the world, or you have to be really, really good, like the freshmen that are getting time. Immediate transfers are a net negative for the sport, I think.
