Quarterback Switch & Coaching Futures

I was wondering if Alex Padilla can get a look at quarterback. Spencer Petras needs to be out for some series and give Alex Padilla an opportunity to see what he can do with the offense.

Speaking of offense, it continues to under perform under Brian Ferentz. He’s had some good game plans, but the bad outweighs the good year after year. Any good candidates to replace him?

A change is needed with this program on many fronts. Are there any coaches from this coaching staff safe with their job or not?

Any thoughts?

If past is prologue, Padilla hasn't taken a snap with the first team in practice, is probably a big step down, and would likely put up a stat line that would make us all cringe.

Neither is going to happen.

They’re not switching QBs in game 3.

BF isn’t getting fired but everyone take solace — the race drama means he won’t be the next HC.

You know which game plan needs to be the base every, single, game? The Ohio State 56 point game.

Too early for any QB shuffling. Kid hasn't played great but not bad enough to warrant that. (it'd be different if we had a Qb under him that's played at all but since we have no clue what we have they'll let Spencer take his lumps)

Has KF ever let go of an assistant during the season? That doesn't seem like something he'd do. He sure as hell isn't going to start doing that now with his kid being the first... My not so crazy prediction regarding BF is that his last day at Iowa will also be KFs last day...

That game was in large part of a function of OSU's poor film study because they put it in the bag before it was played. They ran a base 4-3 defense most of the game and barely blitzed. Iowa executed perfectly almost every play and got a major assist because our line was able to block their 4-3 rather easily and their LBs were not good enough to cover our TEs. The following week, when we played Wisconsin, they ran a base 3-4 and we had, and don't quote me on this because I don't want to look it up, 77 yards of total offense. The defense helped against Wisconsin, giving us 2 pick 6s.

USC similarly thought they could show up and play a base defense and walk all over us. In essence, if you want to beat Iowa it is pretty easy. Just go with a 3-4 defense and keep rotating who the 4th rusher is. Polasek literally has no clue how to stop it and the few times that Iowa can block it, you'll have 7 guys back in coverage and the QB will have such happy feet that he won't know what to do with the ball. Another nice twist is dropping all the LBs back, then one of the linemen will completely brain fart on who to block and someone will still get pressure even with 3 rushers and you'll have 8 back in coverage.

The offensive line play from 2017 through the present has been so bad that if you go back and watch Iowa from 2001-2004 and compare it to the past few years you would never in a million years believe the teams have the same head coach and that he is an "offensive line guru."

Yea, remember those holes that Shonn Greene was running through? They ain't happening now!

This is exactly right. Teams that blitz, put 9 in the box, and otherwise confuse (even NW mixing things up and dropping many in coverage while rushing 3), seemed to work. Purdue typically loads the LOS against Iowa and it generally works. Teams DARE Iowa to beat them over the top. Until we do that, we will see EVEN MORE crowding the LOS and aggressive defenses. Eventually, Petras will have to make someone pay for that.

If there is one thing we know about KF is that he's loyal to a fault and he will give young QBs an opportunity. It took him 4 games to hand the keys to Stanzi in 2008. I would think Petras gets that amount...unless he totally loses his confidence.

For those who want Petras to sit, there is always the "Gillooly Solution".

Something tells me that if a honeymoon porno featuring a HN poster leaked it would not be as good as the work of art Jeff and Tonya made. Shivers. Not that I've seen that video. Nor the one with that drummer from Motley Crue or whatever it was and that chick from Baywatch either.

It's kind of like Johnny Moxon not getting any snaps until Lance Harbor went down. He went from Oopty oop wanna be to whipped cream taste tester just like that.
Any Varsity Blues reference cannot get enough likes. That said Billy Bob would have opened up running lanes against the Kittens.

I don't understand this logic... Petras has struggled the last two games and had next to no meaningful reps last year. Yet it'd be different if we had a QB underneath him that has played, but because we haven't were just going to let him take his lumps? I'm not saying he deserves to be benched for the duration of his career or even the remainder of the season, but in any other sport if a starter is struggling you give them the hook, give them a chance to regroup, and then either let them fix things or win the position back. Our QB's have no meaningful experience because BF and KF refuse to give those backups any meaningful reps. Only way to get your feet wet is to be given an opportunity. Maybe Padilla isn't ready, but from what we've seen Petras may not be either. I just don't see it fair to allow one to continue to struggle while refusing to give the other an opportunity. But that's Iowa Football.

That bothers me, Petras has proven nothing. He was given the family Porsche and he drove it into Lake Michigan. Who is the number 2, I though it was Duece. There is NEVER a real QB competition at Iowa. It's by decree. Petras might be a good QB in the future, but right now he's the U-boat captain.

Whoa, hold on. Iowa's offense hasn't been a Porsche bince Chief Keefe called the shots. This thing is now like one of those Eastern Bloc cars. The ones that were so shitty that when a Yugo got behind the Iron Curtain the sumnabitch fell.
