QB position next year

No chance.. Stanley isn't getting benched unless he's hurt/nicked up. The Ferentz boys have hitched their wagon to him. You all saw how CJ played hobbled the last few weeks of his career and the bowl game right? Senior QBs that started the year before are pretty much entrenched with it...
Like Rudock amirite

That'd be the outlier... But his JR year was when he and CJ both played. It wasn't like the job was 100% Rudocks even though he started most all of those games. That's how coaches had something to go on to decide to replace him to begin with. The only and very few snaps Mansell got this year were in garbage time. Not the same thing obviously.

JC6? Kyle McCann?

Both weren't very good to begin with... Stanley isn't bad by anyones measure. Is he perfect or whatever? Of course not but on the list of best QBs Iowa has had in the last 15 years where do you put him?

Sorry, just destroying the inaccurate narrative that Kirk always just rides his Senior QB's into a bottomless pit. It happened once in 2011 when he should have given Rudock a chance, that's it.

Tier 1:
CJB
Stanzi

Tier 2:
Stanley
Tate

Tier 3:
Rudock
Vandenburg

Tier 4:
Christensen

Stanley can play his way into tier one with a big year next year.

What you're basically saying is that if they are bad enough, Kirk will replace them/give somebody else a shot which contradicts your earlier point. The big question is how bad does Stanley have to play before Kirk gives Mansell a chance? I honestly don't think that Stanley has a chance to be bad enough to be replaced/give somebody else a shot. If Mansell didn't get a chance after the first half of PSU I doubt that he'll get one next year barring injury of course.

Forgot Vandenberg. I'd say Tier 3 for him since he had one alright year and one bad one, a la Rudock, but that bad year was really bad.

He could easily take the #1 spot with a big year next year. The problem is that he needs statistical production and I'm not confident in his receiving corps to catch TDs next year. Not saying it can't happen, but a 30 TD passing year seems unlikely.

Look at Stanzi's weapons: DJK, McNutt, Moeaki... playmakers across the field. It's not a fair comparison.
Sidenote - DJK was the best WR Iowa has had under Ferentz and his career crashing/burning is one of my saddest moments as a Hawkeye football fan.

Que the crack-house jokes.

Would love it!

I did have a thought when I saw he will transfer and be eligible next year. What if he went to Purdue? How scary would that be? With our road schedule being what it is and then to have to beat him and their other weapons, which would be better than the past years when they've beaten us. Don't want to think about it.

Would be great if he went to Purdue cause then they couldnt torch us with Moore/Bell like they are probably going to do (he doesn't have a great arm)...:D

Some issues with next yr will be that the WRs still need to develop quite a bit, RBs have to be better than they were this year (I think Goodson is going to be a great back and maybe he can make an impact next yr) and Stanley also won't have the super talented duo of Hock and Fant to bail him out (Easley gone as well). I'm assuming Hock will be gone. Going to need a lot of young receiving talent to step it up....BSmith, ISM, Tracy, Lockett, Evans, Beyer...

Stanzi from a QB talent discussion is behind both CJB and Stanley. He played on some loaded Hawkeye teams, but winning is winning and that’s why he’s tier one.

i agree. mansell would seem to be the likely choice in the numbers game. not only does he have to beat out stanley for pt, he has to beat out petras for pt in '20. having said that, i am all for have mansell rpo packages as a staple of our offense in '19. i wanted it in '18, but who am i?
What does Petras do that Mansell can’t? Petras isn’t close to as mobile as Mansell and from what I see, not as accurate. Outside of him being 6’5”, I’m not sure what else he brings.

Look at Iowa over the years. Backup QB doesn’t get a lot snaps. Mansell actually got more this year than Stanley did behind Bethard. They just like to ride the starter.

Hard to say without seeing them with more reps. Petras potentially has a bigger arm. Hard to say who’s more accurate at this point.

Getting through progressions and pocket presence is huge for QBs and again something we won’t really know until they get significant play time.

Petras definitely has the bigger arm, and according to his film, has fantastic accuracy on the deep ball. He likely fits our offense much better than Mansell, and though I like PM, I think Petras is gonna make a run at his job here soon.

True. But watching Mansell

throw before games he can rip it. QBs don’t have

Most overrated qb attribute is arm strength. All these guys can’t rip the ball, it’s who is more accurate and, I totally agree with you, who makes quick reads. Doesn’t matter if you can throw it through a wall or 80 yds if there is no onetgere to catch it. Should be interesting.
