Looks to me like, on paper, we will be as deep as I have ever seen at the QB pos. next year. Hypothetical situation: Bad Nat Stanley shows up more than good, both non-conf and 2,3 conf. games. Will nice guy KF pull him and give the other guys starts? After all, Stanley will be gone anyway next year and one of the others will be the starter anyway. Thoughts?

My thoughts are I’d rather not be discussing playing for next years - next year (2020) already.

The 2019 season will likely go as far as Nate Stanley can take us. He will be a third year starter who is making a run at some all time Iowa QB records. If he sucks so much that he should be benched than that probably means we suck next year which sucks. Let’s worry about 2020 when we get there.

Lastly if you want to talk about having a strong QB room I’d have that discussion. I’m very high on Mansell, Petras, and now Padilla (who is set to enroll early). Our QB recruiting has been very strong lately, however my guess is we will see some attrition from at least one of those three.

My thoughts? That post was an incoherent mess. I had to read it 4 times before I finally understood it.

Anyway, I believe Kirk will stick with Stanley as long as Stanley is healthy and Iowa has a chance to make a bowl game.

This is the right answer. There would need to be some incredible progress behind Stanley and Stanley would have to have a statline with sub 50% completion and more pics than TDs for anyone else to even be considered.

No chance.. Stanley isn't getting benched unless he's hurt/nicked up. The Ferentz boys have hitched their wagon to him. You all saw how CJ played hobbled the last few weeks of his career and the bowl game right? Senior QBs that started the year before are pretty much entrenched with it...

He'll stick with Stanley unless injured. The goal will to make another good bowl game, and Stanley gives you that best chance.

Iowa will not contend for the West Division with the schedule it has. The whole division set up is ridiculous, since teams play wildly different schedules from year to year. Iowa had the advantage in 2018 (didn't take full advantage), but Nebraska has the schedule advantage in 2019.

Unless Nate is caught selling the game plan to the next upcoming opponent this fall, Nate will be/should be the starting QB next year. I'm not persuaded that there is a better QB on the roster, like I was in 2014. However, assuming there's a blowout win or two next year, I'd like to see more of Mansell or Petras next year, that will be of value for 2020.

Wrong, Jalen Hurts. That is all.
Would love it!

I did have a thought when I saw he will transfer and be eligible next year. What if he went to Purdue? How scary would that be? With our road schedule being what it is and then to have to beat him and their other weapons, which would be better than the past years when they've beaten us. Don't want to think about it.

You never know.

DATE OPPONENT
9-5-09 NORTHERN IOWA WON 17-16
9-12-09 at Iowa State WON 35-3
9-19-09 ARIZONA WON 27-17
9-26-09 at Penn State WON 21-10
10-3-09 ARKANSAS STATE WON 24-21
10-10-09 MICHIGAN WON 30-28
10-17-09 at Wisconsin WON 20-10
10-24-09 at Michigan State WON 15-13

10-31-09 INDIANA WON 42-24
11-7-09 NORTHWESTERN LOST 10-17
11-14-09 at Ohio State LOST 24-27 (OT)

11-21-09 MINNESOTA WON 12-0

That schedule was a meat-grinder, and Iowa was a Stanzi ankle-sprain away from running the table.

I don't think it will matter if we are bowl eligible or not. KF will stick with Stanley.

Purdue would win the west. God I hope he doesn't land anywhere in the Big Ten. Michigan State would be really scary if they got him.

i agree. mansell would seem to be the likely choice in the numbers game. not only does he have to beat out stanley for pt, he has to beat out petras for pt in '20. having said that, i am all for have mansell rpo packages as a staple of our offense in '19. i wanted it in '18, but who am i?

I would absolutely love to see the Ferentzs install some actual RPO. This "We run RPO, we just decide the option pre-snap" business is BS.

I disagree that Mansell would be the likely choice unless he transfers this offseason. Next year he will be a RS So and he’s on pace to be a two starter at Iowa. As soon he enrolls in the fall semester next year he would only be able to play one year if he were to transfer to another school. At that point he’d be better off battling for the starting job his junior year (2020). If he loses he can grad transfer the next year to a smaller school and try to start for a year. Point being, if he doesn’t transfer this offseason, he’s likely here the next two seasons.

I would argue Petras is more likely, especially if Padilla puts some pressure on him this year.

Shit don't give him the idea...

Hope to god that Stanley is not terrible. The coaching staff has been reluctant to make changes in the past. Thinking of Vandenberg in 2012. Yes the change was made from Rudock to CJ. Hopefully if things aren't going well there is a change but there wasn't this year when Stanley was injured...
