Punters

Read somewhere that Stanley was a high average punter in high school. A QB that can punt has a lot of benefits.

That was me. He had something like a 44.9 AVERAGE for like 3 yrs. Had all-conference honors as a punter as well. If he had that average, you know some of his punts were over that.

Even more impressive is the consistency in average over multiple years. Right around 45 ypp every year.

Yep, I recall Marv Cook kicking off for the Hawks. I don't remember if it was for an entire season or several games, but it was kind of humorous seeing such a big dude kick off. He may have punted a bit too - anyone else recall that?

Given Kirk's willingness to throw first year frosh into critical spots now (WR, kick-off return, right tackle, even tolerating fumbles!), I can only guess Gersonde must not even be close to winning the position at this point.

Here's a thought. Why don't the coaches throw Recinos into the competition over the next couple weeks? I'm pretty sure he punted in high school. Maybe let him practice it for a couple weeks again and see what he can do. He's already said he is far stronger than he was when he joined the program, and also more confident. Plus he won't get rattled once the spotlight is on him during a game.

Maybe the coaches are considering trying him. If Gersonde hasn't seen the field yet, then I think you have to get creative with other options during the bye week.

Pretty sure you don't want your kicker practicing and/or punting. A completely different kicking motion. Nothing like F'ing up his FG kicking!

I thought about that, but still worth it. Duncan is still a good kicker and ready if needed. Coluzzi kicked off last year too. Not a big deal.

Back in the Fry era I seem to remember that for a short period they had to use an Olineman for kickoffs because the regular kicker was hurt - Jeff Drost pops from an old synapse, maybe it was Dave Croston?

Point being is that there is someone on the team that can punt that is not normally a punter.

'Hey, Coach, I was the backup punter in high school.'

I believe one was Jon Roehlk.
