Punters

We have to have the WORST punters in D1. If Rastetter is our best, Heaven help us. I just hope none are on schollies

Rastetter is a walk-on, who knows if he goes on scholarship eventually. Gersonde is on scholarship, but I'm not sure if punter is a place you want to see a true freshman playing in D1 ball. That said, it's time to see what Gersonde can do. Rastetter is a good rugby punter, but outside of that has been pretty bad.

Can't the punting position be one that you could take a transfer from a junior college. I mean scour the junior colleges and look for a guy that has proven himself on the field. I'm sure they are out there. Just keep plucking JC's for that position.

I guess my point is that it was pretty comforting knowing when Colluzzi came as a Grad transfer. He was a proven commodity.

S**t! I bet over 50% of us on here can punt a ball 35 yards

Well actually no. They stand 15 yards behind so add that to the 35. Most can kick 20 using that formula. Then there is the hang time which getting 50 yards with any hang time would be most difficult. It's just not that easy. Myself, being a soccer player I could kick into the end zone prior to my knee injury on kick offs with decent hand time. I could do +45 on field goals with really good line and bar clearance. Further if I could drop the height. I would struggle to kick a legit 35 yard punt consistently. Most high school teams can't do that. Actually very few do.

In most years, KF coached teams have major issues with at least 1 position.

I believe you as I meant my comment to be sarcastic, The one thing you did touch on was your last part and in the beginning of the KF years strong special teams were the biggest reason we were in and won games. I'm curious as why that has dropped off.

There ain't no Reggie Roby's out there to bail them out. Hard to fathom this is the best they got, but it must be.

My guess is that kickers are rarely scholarship (full) positions and he did well getting by with that. Doesn't always work I guess. Kicking is very emotions based even if you have the skill.

Even the guy who hit the big kick against Pitt, it took incredible guts. To hit a 57 yarder was amazing. From the TV angle I thought it was very low, but this shows it better. Incredible kick.

Reggie Roby often out kicked his coverage. This year, the bend don't break and lack of 1st down yardage deep in own territory is a bigger issue than the punting.... in my opinion. I doubt KF isn't using the best practice guy. His punting stats are decent statistically speaking. He doesn't drop as much on the road as other Iowa kickers have. He doesn't get style points for sure.

So has Gersonde not punted this season? How can they possibly justify still rolling Rastetter out there? I'm honestly embarrassed for him. It's brutal watching us punt from inside our 10 and the other team getting the ball at our 40 or 35.

Just imagine how bad our other guys are.

If Brian thought for half a second there was a better option Rastetter would be riding the pine. Kicking and punting aren't positions where you give people a bunch of chances to work the kinks out.

Back in the Fry era I seem to remember that for a short period they had to use an Olineman for kickoffs because the regular kicker was hurt - Jeff Drost pops from an old synapse, maybe it was Dave Croston?

Point being is that there is someone on the team that can punt that is not normally a punter.

'Hey, Coach, I was the backup punter in high school.'

Read somewhere that Stanley was a high average punter in high school. A QB that can punt has a lot of benefits.

Do y'all not know the drill by now??? The more people ask Ferments about making a switch, the less likely it will happen.

Yep, I recall Marv Cook kicking off for the Hawks. I don't remember if it was for an entire season or several games, but it was kind of humorous seeing such a big dude kick off. He may have punted a bit too - anyone else recall that?

Given Kirk's willingness to throw first year frosh into critical spots now (WR, kick-off return, right tackle, even tolerating fumbles!), I can only guess Gersonde must not even be close to winning the position at this point.

Here's a thought. Why don't the coaches throw Recinos into the competition over the next couple weeks? I'm pretty sure he punted in high school. Maybe let him practice it for a couple weeks again and see what he can do. He's already said he is far stronger than he was when he joined the program, and also more confident. Plus he won't get rattled once the spotlight is on him during a game.

Maybe the coaches are considering trying him. If Gersonde hasn't seen the field yet, then I think you have to get creative with other options during the bye week.

We'd be better off lining up on offense and quick kicking or letting Stanley kick it out of the gun.
Since Stanley has a gun on him for an arm and can over throw receivers I'm with you, let him punt it once. Just so he doesn't out punt our coverage team!
