Punter

Let me just add that he did all of this with the wind at his back or in his face. Absolutely amazing how accurate he was considering the game conditions.

He's every bit as good as Reggie Roby....may he rest in peace.

He's a very different kicker than Roby. Roby was known back in the day for his unprecedented hang time and distance. He would literally about hit the roof of the metrodome. Kickers now days are so well defined now pertaining to placements of kicks and certain kicks in different situations, with the emphasis of getting teams to start within the 10 yrd line. I realize that was the goal back in the day, but they are so specialized now, even changing the position of the football when kicking, more back spin, aiming for the 2 yard line than out-of-bounds, etc..

Both were and are effective for their times.

It's funny no media analyst (pregame) mentioned this as what could be a game changing part of the game for Iowa to succeed. It clearly was what contributed to the win.

You are right about the specialization today. Back in the day, punters were pretty much limited to kicking the ball into what was called the “coffin corner”. You don’t see a punt kicked out of bounds inside the ten yard line as much today.

ever won the Heisman?
Not unless he was a Jim Thorpe type who played multiple positions.

I wonder if a QB like Paul Hornung (who played that position in college) or Roger Staubach punted as well. I'll bet at least one Heisman winning QB also did double duty as a punter.

I remember Mark Moseley of the NFL (then) Redskins once winning league MVP as a placekicker.

There used to be quarterbacks that punted as well. A couple that come to mind, Dan Pastorini of the Houston Oilers and Joe Thiesman of the Washington Redskins. There are probably more but you don't see it today. Ohio State had a QB who was actually a better punter, Tom Tupa, who went on to punt in the NFL.

Danny White of the Cowboys, although after Staubach retired I think he only did it another year or two before the Cowboys used a full time punter.
