Here are a few observations from tonight's PTL action. I did not see any of the Hubbard vs. McCabe game.
Gatens-Struggled from the floor and did not play well. His team got blown out by 25, so it wasn't much of a game. Got swatted multiple times on drives to the hoop...IMO, not his game. 3 or ball fake and hit a mid range bank shot or pass.
Basabe-Played a decent game, but his team does not have good chemistry. Hit some tough shots including a sweet reverse dunk off a missed shot.
White-The more I see of him, the more I like. He isn't spectacular in any phase of the game, but always seems to be around the ball. He hit a couple of 3's, had a nice dunk on a run out, tipped a lot of balls or got rebounds and missed a dunk when I swear his elbow was at the rim. His hops are not exaggerated.
Cartwright-The dude plays at another level. He is deceptively quick and hit some 3's, pull up jumpers and his usual ankle-breaking drives followed by a scoop or floater.
Olaseni-First time I have seen him play. He is definitely more athletic than Archie and Brommer and has a serious burst of speed. He seems much more comfortable on defense and blocked / altered a number of shots, including a few that required him to run a play down from behind. Offensively he didn't do much for most of the game, but had a nice little burst in the last few minutes making a couple of quick post moves down low and knocking down a turn around in the lane. Also made 2 FT's with nice rotation and arch on the shots.
Marble-Definitely a different player than we saw last year. He hits the floor and expects to dominate the game. At times this leads to some poor shot selection, but it is the PTL. He looked extremely quick and attacks at every opportunity.
Ogelsby-Definitely surprised me with his play. He is a capable ballhandler, made some excellent decisions with the ball, hit a couple 3's along with a tough hanging jumper after catching a pass on the baseline with momentum going away from the hoop. He has a quick release and every shot looked like it would go in. He needs to add some strength, but he isn't afraid to scrap down low and grabbed a few boards in traffic.
Archie-Another uneventful performance. I see Olaseni taking all / most of his PT.
May-Solid game, nothing spectacular. Price was hot early and the team was setting him up. May hit some tough hanging shots along with a couple of 3's. He seems much more comfortable taking dribble drive pull up jumpers (his ability to hang in the air is freakish). I am not a fan of him popping 3's...just doesn't seem like his game.
Washpun-I was neutral on him over the summer, but after seeing him in the PTL a couple of times, I wish things had worked out differently between him and the Hawks. He looks to distribute first, hustles on both ends and doesn't appear to contest that Marble is the go to guy on their team. Watching him dunk in pre game is a sight to see.
Former Hawks at PTL (back for a reunion I think): Steve Krafcasin (sp?), Bobby Hansen, Luke Recker, Wade Lookingbill, Cy Tate, Luehrsman (I think), Jared Reiner, Greg Brunner and Horner (I think). It was hard make everyone out as they were all in one corner of the gym.
