PTL Observations 7-10-11

Here are a few observations from tonight's PTL action. I did not see any of the Hubbard vs. McCabe game.

Gatens-Struggled from the floor and did not play well. His team got blown out by 25, so it wasn't much of a game. Got swatted multiple times on drives to the hoop...IMO, not his game. 3 or ball fake and hit a mid range bank shot or pass.

Basabe-Played a decent game, but his team does not have good chemistry. Hit some tough shots including a sweet reverse dunk off a missed shot.

White-The more I see of him, the more I like. He isn't spectacular in any phase of the game, but always seems to be around the ball. He hit a couple of 3's, had a nice dunk on a run out, tipped a lot of balls or got rebounds and missed a dunk when I swear his elbow was at the rim. His hops are not exaggerated.

Cartwright-The dude plays at another level. He is deceptively quick and hit some 3's, pull up jumpers and his usual ankle-breaking drives followed by a scoop or floater.

Olaseni-First time I have seen him play. He is definitely more athletic than Archie and Brommer and has a serious burst of speed. He seems much more comfortable on defense and blocked / altered a number of shots, including a few that required him to run a play down from behind. Offensively he didn't do much for most of the game, but had a nice little burst in the last few minutes making a couple of quick post moves down low and knocking down a turn around in the lane. Also made 2 FT's with nice rotation and arch on the shots.

Marble-Definitely a different player than we saw last year. He hits the floor and expects to dominate the game. At times this leads to some poor shot selection, but it is the PTL. He looked extremely quick and attacks at every opportunity.

Ogelsby-Definitely surprised me with his play. He is a capable ballhandler, made some excellent decisions with the ball, hit a couple 3's along with a tough hanging jumper after catching a pass on the baseline with momentum going away from the hoop. He has a quick release and every shot looked like it would go in. He needs to add some strength, but he isn't afraid to scrap down low and grabbed a few boards in traffic.

Archie-Another uneventful performance. I see Olaseni taking all / most of his PT.

May-Solid game, nothing spectacular. Price was hot early and the team was setting him up. May hit some tough hanging shots along with a couple of 3's. He seems much more comfortable taking dribble drive pull up jumpers (his ability to hang in the air is freakish). I am not a fan of him popping 3's...just doesn't seem like his game.

Washpun-I was neutral on him over the summer, but after seeing him in the PTL a couple of times, I wish things had worked out differently between him and the Hawks. He looks to distribute first, hustles on both ends and doesn't appear to contest that Marble is the go to guy on their team. Watching him dunk in pre game is a sight to see.

Former Hawks at PTL (back for a reunion I think): Steve Krafcasin (sp?), Bobby Hansen, Luke Recker, Wade Lookingbill, Cy Tate, Luehrsman (I think), Jared Reiner, Greg Brunner and Horner (I think). It was hard make everyone out as they were all in one corner of the gym.

Excellent, HawkIhoops. Thanks for the update. Good news about Josh and Gabe. They seem to be somewhat overlooked. Olaseni's strength supposedly is his defense. Could be a difference maker protecting the basket while Fran's press picks the opponents apart. Oglesby's strength supposedly is his passing and court savvy. Sounds like he is working on his release. Am going to attempt to get to IC for the PTL tournament. Wonder if there will be room.

I was planning on going to PTL today. I got the the NL rec about 2:55 and parking was stupid, so I left. Seating would have likely been crowded and I just didn't want to deal with finding a spot to park. I don't think I made any games last year, but the year before I didn't have any problem finding a place to park.

Agree, parking seems worse this year. And all neighboring business lots that I saw had "No PTL Parking" signs up, even places not open in the evening. I just drove around until I saw somebody leave a spot.

Parking won't be as bad if the pool is closed, but I would encourage you to get to the rec. center 20-30 minutes early as it will be standing room only.

My original post got a bit lengthy, so I didn't add this, but think it is noteworthy. It is obvious McCaffrey has assembled a pretty good group of kids. Before and after games players were signing autographs and posing for pictures. Cole and Cy Tate were mingling with some of the new guys and I hope both are able to be around the team this summer. I have no idea what the W-L record will be this year, but it is refreshing to finally have a roster of kids that want to be here and seem committed to turning Iowa hoops around.

I got there at 3:05 and had no trouble parking across the street and finding a good vantage point to stand and watch the games.

was Luehrsman that short guy that looks like he's put on 50+ lbs?.......I could make out everyone but could not figure out who this guy was.

I am not sure about Luehrsman either. He and his wife who is quite the hottie are real estate agents in CR I believe. The dude I thought was Luehrsman looked pretty fit, but I know who you are talking about.

that must not have been him then, this guy was the definition of not fit.........his actions kind of reminded me of turtle from Entourage...........like a follower of somebody else's glory.
