Anthony Lee-- IMO the best player in the PTL hands down. Very active on both ends, strong to his right and left, virtually unguardable. I wish Iowa had this guy or another like him.

McCabe--Next to Lee, he was the best player tonight and really showed improved quickness, ballhandling and passing. He was the go to guy for his team and made some tough shots on the perimeter, mid range and down low. Constant motion and hustle on both ends.

May--Couldn't hit anything from the perimeter and seemed indecisive with the ball. He didn't commit to drives and didn't shoot, so there were a number of times he was just stuck on the floor looking for someone to pass to. IMO, he needs to scratch the 3 from his arsenal and focus on developing a strong dribble drive and jumper. He is a physical specimen and is a tough matchup on the block, but struggles to get himself into a shooting position.

Oglesby--Another solid game. He hit some deep 3's, knocked down a sweet step back jumper on the baseline and his misses were in and out.

White--Hit a few shots, but never got into rhythm.

Gatens-Cold shooting night from the perimeter. Made some baskets on drives late when the game was out of hand.

Basabe--Made some nice moves in the paint and had some run out dunks. Nobody on the Gatens, Basabe, White team played that well and the game was hard to watch.

Washpun--Solid game of distributing the ball and guarding Farokmanesh. He is lightning quick and had a dunk in transition that silenced the crowd. Still disappointing to me we didn't make a more robust run at this kid.

Brommer--Pretty lackluster performance. Couldn't finish, didn't hit the boards. Knee may be bothering him still.

Archie--A couple of decent blocks on guards, but another yawner performance.

Marble-Did not play due to sprained ankle from Tuesday's game.

Lots of questions about Hubbard, but nobody seemed to have any answers.

I'm scared to death to have Archie and Brommer at the 5 for us this year. Maybe we should have taken a run at Cougs.

thanks for the report

Thanks for the fill-in. Of the reports from various HN folk who've attended these games, I'm having a hard time mustering up excitement for this year's edition of the Iowa Hawkeyes. Looks like more of the same, frankly. That's not an indictment of you or any of the other PTL onlookers.

Come on, have some faith! It can't get any worse, right? I sure hope not at least..

My fear is that we have another rough upcoming season and people start to lose faith and patience. What some people (people who probably don't follow the program too closely and have bad memories) will need to remember is, just how far Lick drove this program into the ground. I don't think many coaches could turn this program around, but out of the few that can, I think that Fran is one of them.

Anywho, sorry to stray from the topic at hand. Thanks for the update! That's good to hear about McCabe. I think too many people are writing him off. I know he had a rough first year, but he was a true freshman that was pushed into action when he really could have used a redshirt year. That's too bad about Brommer and Archie. That could be a real problem

Btw, OP- do you mean Anthony James? Because I'm not familiar with Anthony Lee.

I posted the other day that now we better really hope McCabe improved a lot.

Gatens shot poor from the outside and his team didn't play well together. Where have we heard that before?

The statute of limitations is up on that one.

He's talking about Anthony Lee. He's a 6'7 left that plays for Temple and is living in the Quad Cities. The OP is right in that he's probably the best player in the PTL.

Haven't seen much that says Fran has changed that direction.

Couple points I forgot to mention:

Stokes-First time I have seen him play and I was pleasantly surprised. While I don't see him being a key contributor this season, he showed significant improvement from last year. He hit 2 or 3 baseline 3's, a couple of mid range jumpers and some nice transition dunks. Good athleticism, runs the floor well, surprisingly nice touch from outside and although slight of build, he works hard down low defensively.

I left the PTL last night hoping that Anthony Lee and Washpun will miss home cooking and want to transfer to Iowa. It won't happen, but man, those dudes would help us out a ton. Athletically both are in another class and we sorely need their skills on a rather vanilla roster post Hubbard's departure. Unless the "team" makes the whole better than the sum of its parts, I am not holding my breath for a rebound in the W-L column this season.

Although White did not get into a good rhythm yesterday, I think he is has a much more polished game offensively than Brommer or Archie. What he lacks in bulk he makes up in quick ups and nose for the ball. He reminds me of a certain Ryan Bowen. He has numerous tips on rebounds from the weak side. He is a better shooter than Ryan was. He is better of the dribble than Ryan. He actually reminds me a little of Raef coming out of highschool. Although not as highly touted and maybe not as physically gifted. My only concern is defense for him. Good hands, good shooter, nose for the ball, good passer, good off the dribble. I'm very excited about him. He may get quite a few minutes this year. I believe I was sitting by Matt's grandma, she said Matt may have been under the weather. I think that game was difficult to watch because Basabe, Gatens, White combination was too much for them to handle. Everyone have faith. This team is going to be much improved. I was actually a little disappointed Josh's team did not work harder to get him outside shot. He handled the ball quite a bit. I do not see much drop off in our three freshman. I think they all get some minutes. Team will be much deeper and everyone will be fresher. I also thought Josh did a nice job on Matt. Moved feet well seemed to always be in good position. He seemed to frustrate Matt a little. Nice to see Cartwright and Olaseni there watching game. They sat together, talked and laughed the entire three hours. They appear to be developing some good chemistry.

Reading between the lines of the various PTL posts, this is sort of the conclusion I'm coming to. I really hope to be proved wrong.

Is Anthony Lee a native of the Quad-Cities? Do not remember his name from his prep years.

Thanks for the report. As for Iowa's W/L record this year, I still expect an uptick. The schedule is easier this year, for one,and our depth will still be improved,if we are healthy. We will have one of the more mature teams in the league with 5 upperclassmen and 4 returning starters. We will probably start 3 seniors,a jr,and a soph. Those kinds of teams usually overachieve.

Have faith Tweeter!! The development of this team last year was night and day from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.

Fast forward another summer and fall for those same players to develop their games, and get even more accustomed to the new tempo. I just don't see why they wouldn't continue to develop. We are talking about 18-22 year old kids who don't just "stop" developing for the most part. Some might stall out, or have peaked, but for the most part almost everyone who plays BB continually is better at 22 than 18.

FireHawk is correct on White. He is deceptively athletic and has a high basketball IQ. Despite not looking the part, he is quick off the floor, runs well and isn't afraid to go north-south on drives into traffic. I also agree that Ogelsby's team didn't do enough to get him shots. Ogelsby is definitely a born shooter and has impressed me with his range and quick release. He hit a couple of DEEP 3's that looked as effortless as a free throw when he shot them.

Wth!?! And another poster says, "The statute of limitations is up on that one". Really??? Fran has had ONE season. This is a major rebuilding project, it's going to take some time. You don't get it turned around in one year. Not even 2-3 in some cases. Look at the time it took Ferentz. And I would say that the football program was in better shape at that point than when Fran took over. And I thought I was a negative Nancy, geesh!

P.S. - Thanks for the clarification on Anthony Lee, btw. I wasn't aware of him. Too bad we don't have him playing for us! Anthony James plays in the PTL too though, right? I would imagine that he has to be one of the better players in the league.

No crap. I couldn't agree more. Fran has changed pretty much all of his personnel & style of play. Decent recruits didn't even want to sniff Iowa. It's not going to happen in one year & Hubbard was not going to be the savior alone. Some people need to keep it real.

The Iowa program that Ferentz took over was really down. The recruiting was also down at that point in time. Heck, they couldn't move the ball on offense or even complete a pass. It was 3 & out then punt, 3 & out then punt. I believe it was 1998 that was just brutal.

Why should May scratch the 3 point shot for his game? He was our best 3 point shooter last year % wise. I agree that he needs to get more aggressive and attack the hoop, but it's easier to do that when teams fear that you can hit a 3.

I LoL'd on that one myself. No only did he lead the team, but you might want to add that for the first half of the season he was shooting almost 50% for the 3! Eric May definitely needs to keep practing the 3. He also needs to work on the short jumper and the drive & dish to teammates - NO jump passes please...
