Press Release for Heroes Game

Wow, I have lost a lot of respect for some of my fellow Iowans today who think it is lame and stupid to honor everyday "heros" and give to charities. What is wrong with some of you people? I thought Iowans were better than that, looks like we are stooping to the levels of the SEC country.

There is nothing wrong with honoring people who give back, but it is an entirely different thing to manufacture outreach with a grocery store in order to hype a football game.

I remain indifferent. I'm not particularly thrilled with this name but I also know they weren't going to do anything cool like call it the "Missouri River Showdown" or "the Battle for Carter Lake".

I think it's a great idea. Just need to see the trophy now.

Some people will always find something to complain about. My advice would be to ignore it. Did you guys really think they were going to create a rivalry game and trophy without having a sponsor involved? At least the sponsor is a company that represents the midwest. Give it a rest. Sure they will use this as a tremendous advertising opportunity, but at least they are also using it to recognize individuals who deserve it. Quit whining.

And to protect it from people calling it on its bland lameness, they wrap it in charity and patriotism so that you look like a jerk for calling it what it is.

Why do we need trophies...why do we need to give it a name. Why can't it just be Nebraska/Iowa and play the ******* game?

are you guys really complaining that this game will help raise money for charity and honor some local heros? WTF is the big deal?

i swear to god some of you would whine because your ice cream is too cold. grow up

I like the idea. However, I think they should have gone further. If Iowa wins we give them Council Bluffs. If Nebraska wins they get Council Bluffs. :)

They partnered with the grocery store to help raise money for the American Red Cross, not just to hype the game. My goodness.

Don't worry iowaboy. It really doesn't matter what is done, there would be no shortage of people complaining. I think it is a good and unique idea. I'm guessing the same people would be in full melt down if Iowa and Minnesota just decided all of a sudden to play for some stupid bronze pig.

A lot of people are upset that anything at all is being done, but this is different than possibly any other rivalry in college football history. I can't imagine there has ever been an annual rivalry that has been this big from day 1. Most rivalries evolve over time, and then, may introduce a trophy to symbolize its importance. I'm guessing the states of Iowa and Minnesota weren't anticipating that first meeting between the Hawkeyes and Gophers for months.

This is going to be a fantastic rivalry, and I'm sure that over time, the trophy will be thought of the same way as some of the other great trophies in college football...assuming it looks nothing like the CyHawk trophy.

Yes that is exactly what happened. They came up with the game as the "Hero's Game" and said, how can we make sure when people claim it is lame they look like jerks. Oh yea lets add a charity and claim patriotism. Im sure the charity and honoring a hero was just to make sure they could call you a jerk for claiming its lame. Seriously?

Its not the charity that bothers me. That is a good idea that should be used more often, but using such an inoffensive and boring name/trophy for a rivalry game is incredibly weak. Traveling trophies should mean something. not just an inoffensive hooray for sports. Just like legends and leaders and all the two name trophies, they are to scared of hurting anyone's feeling to make something that is meaningful.

It's a noble concept I just thought that football games were about football. not sure what this what this has to do with Iowa-Nebraska meeting on the gridiron.

joshhawk - It is about the football game. What do you think they are gonna play 10 minutes of football and then dedicate the next 3 hrs of television to the 2 individuals being recognized?
