Preseason Depth Chart

Just a quick glance, but I noticed Nixon @ #2. That could be a battle for the starting job from now until fall.
I have a feeling our DL is going to be stellar.
Get the rest of it sorted out and I have no doubt that it's extremely possible for this defense to be in the record books.

The interior defensive line shuffles so much being a 1 or 2 on the depth chart really has little to do with playing time. The number 2 guy (especially if he has the hot hand) will play as much as the number 1 guy.

I think he may have been banged up in the spring a bit.

IMHO he’s just not as good as the other backs. Speed only gets you so far but I just don’t feel that IKM has the vision or patience required to play the position at a high level. It took the coaches some game film to see that I believe.

Yes, all 3 Backs showed a lack of vision last year, Kelly Martin was the worst IMO

I hope the Paulson twins and Devonte Young can have successful seasons that see them make an impact. It may be on special teams. It looks like one of the Paulsons might start but Kallenberger may have something to say about that.

In this age of college football, its rare that SRs who haven't started much (Paulson twins) and have seen younger players play and a guy like Young who has been buried by younger players his entire career, have stuck it out with the program and didn't run when adversity hit.

I wouldn't put a lot of stock in this two-deep.

Come on, you guys know better than that.

I know we're living in a world of needed outrage, but I wouldn't get worked up about a depth chart in July
True the best talent on D has always been listed as the "backup" in many of the Commander's 2 deep. Could be a brilliant Jim Harbaugh type move.

So we brought in a proven PAC 12 guy from ASU only to see that he's not even on the 2 deep at punter. The punt game is yet another disaster waiting to happen.
Kirkball needs a solid, above average punter to get beyond average each year.

Is there a more important position?

You would think that with Kirk's offense, the two spots where Iowa would dominate in recruiting would be RB and Punter. Iowa should be getting the cream of the crop every year because Iowa uses those two spots more than most teams.

Defense wins championships. This defense has a chance to be really, really special. Lattimore has to have a Sr. season like others have had. Nixon and Shannon need to provide the depth to allow the interior rotations that have been so effective. That being said...holy shit this defense has potential. Depth is good on the back seven, they all now have a year of experience...outside of Merriweather...but that kid is an athletic freak. If he can be in the right position and understand the defense...an upgrade.

I know AJ goes pro...and possibly Golston (although I think he stays), but our defense is set for a few years. Waggoner at 270 already...and he's got some talent. This is going to be fun to watch. The match up with ISU's offensive line that is Senior dominated is going to be great. We dominated them last year...lot's of motivation.

The bar should be high for this team...please, please give us good Stanley in the big games.

I am with you on everything except for Merriweather being an upgrade over 5th year senior Gervasse. That dude was really good and way under-rated. Merriweather might get to that level sooner rather than later, but I have a hard time believing it happens in his first year starting.

That said, if he is that good that soon, this is probably the best defense of the KF era. Right now I think he is the main question mark.

Well...I'm not going to bag on a player as I think Gervasse was a good player. I think Merriweather's upside is higher. The one thing Phil Parker does is identify guys that can excel in his secondary. He knows what he's doing so his comments here and the fact that he's not moving a corner is telling. I honestly thought Ojemudia would move to safety because he is a good tackler...but Merriweather won the spot or has so far. It's early though.

What? The guy actually has to show up and win the job?

(By the way, he did show up, right? Because once he does start praticing, and assuming he's healthy, he's pretty much a lock to win the job, right?)

Actually read the thread before you complain about Sleep-Dalton not being on there.

Do you really think KF would have gone after him if he didn't expect him to compete for the starting job as soon as he got the chance? Do you really believe Sleep-Dalton would have come here if he thought KF was gonna start Rastetter over him anyways?

Is Sleep-Dalton on campus or was he for Spring ball? I would've thought he would've transferred and been in camp immediately following the prior semester.
He only made it to IC early last month. He had to finish up at ASU before he could get here, and all they've done since then is summer workouts.
